Doesn't surprise me. Is it good? I never bought the boxset.

I got the True Blue songs off iTunes. Apart from the sound quality (mono!), they're great. I especially love "California Bound" with a hard-rocking ending and "The Farewell Bend" with a brilliant slide guitarist.

I've heard some of them on youtube now. They're all of a piece. Very listenable. The vocals sound relaxed. Guess I'll grab them off iTunes or another vendor (as opposed to going whole hog on the boxset).

The Farewell Bend is the best of the batch IMO. Fantastic version.

The Farewell Bend is lovely. I can't find the True Blue version of Western Star. Is it good? I'm missing a version of 21 Reasons.

I realized today that I actually never listened to the extra mp3 tracks from pledgemusic.com. I don't even remember how you got them, I just found the files on my computer... Did you get them only when preordering the box set? Anyway there's a stunning live version of Dog In The Sand, I wonder what show it's from. Oh and full band version of Jumping Beans!

Dog in the Sand live, that would be great. How is the full band Jumping Beans?

I was looking through the credits on AllMusic for the Catholics box set the other day and noticed an unfamiliar yet kind of legendary name - Tommy Stimson on bass.

Heard he played with the Catholics once or twice during the final days between Catholics and Pixies and he is friends with Dave Phillips. Also read Charles let him use his studio during the 03 or 04 tour for his Gorrilla Head album.

But does anyone know what he actually played on with the Catholics? I'm guessing the Red Letter Days bonus album demos but if anyone knows for definite please share.

Clearly some vinyl configuration of the Catholics stuff is coming out. I think they've re-pressed most everything else. The Catholics are all that's left. Frank owns those records himself so there's no fuss when it comes to rights.

It will be interesting to see if the two Catholics B-sides collections get physical releases. They were iTunes only back in the day (and then of course later dropped into the CD box set's alphabetical presentation).

Interesting - not quite sure what's going on with those tracklists... is he re-sequencing the albums, or maybe the recordings are being presented in strictly chronological order?

The Catholics albums were recorded on old school analog tape and the pictures posted are just images of those 20+-year-old boxes of the old reels with the song (and take number) contained therein written on them. I would read literally nothing into the "tracklists". That's just a description of what's in the box.

My takeaway from those images is that they're going straight to the original tapes to remaster the Catholics albums for reissue.

Are these pressed on demand or do they make a certain number of them up front?

There aren't a whole lot of vinyl pressing plants and they're very busy and tend get to backed up, particularly in the past year because of pandemic restrictions. If you want a record pressed you have to reserve a place months in advance of your projected release date. So pressing on demand isn't a thing.

So labels make a certain number up front and then if those sell fast and the band is hot, they MIGHT do a second pressing.

FB&C vinyl box set
https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=409284647866013
On 8th July Demon release Frank Black and The Catholics - The Complete Studio Albums box set. This superb box set includes 3 albums never before available on vinyl.

Between 1998 and 2003, Frank Black and co. released six albums under the ‘Frank Black And The Catholics’ moniker. All recorded live and direct to two track tape, the albums are some of the most energised, raw, and essential of Frank Black’s career.

For almost two decades, the Catholics’ studio albums have been out of print or unavailable on vinyl. Now, Demon Records is proud to present ‘The Complete Studio Albums’ boxset featuring all six original releases expertly remastered from the original studio tapes and pressed on heavyweight 180g clear vinyl.

Includes all six studio albums – ‘Frank Black And The Catholics’ (1998), ‘Pistolero’ (1999), ‘Dog In The Sand’ (2001) [first time on vinyl], ‘Black Letter Days’ (2002) [2LP, first time on vinyl] ‘Devil’s Workshop’ (2002) [first time on vinyl], and ‘Show Me Your Tears’ (2003).

Each album is pressed on 180g clear vinyl and housed in printed inner sleeves along with outer sleeves featuring spot gloss detailing. All 80 tracks have been newly remastered from the original studio tapes by Phil Kinrade at Alchemy Mastering at AIR.

The albums are housed together in a rigid outer sleeve and accompanied by a 32 page booklet featuring new liner notes by Catholics producer / engineer Ben Mumphrey plus unseen and rare photographs by Steve Gullick.

Yeah, I want that book! But the vinyl....no, not for me.
I would buy a b-sides and outtakes and live record on vinyl. Instantly.

I'm a vinyl fan so consider me intrigued, particularly since the records were recorded in analogue. It would have been nice to see One More Road for the Hit included.
