Post here about your favourite non-FrankBlack.Net websites. Let us know what is so great about them and what can be improved on.

Incidentally, I've been looking at TMBW.NET (thanks to Brian's heads up) as they use MediaWiki as well as the Muse wiki, which uses the same software, but doesn't do so nearly as well as the TMBG site.

I like the novel Leisure Suit Larry look of this.

If I ever get my domain...
You are presented with a refrigerator.

There are notes under the fridge magnets.
The door opens, you can move some of the items.
Pull out the sausages and watermelon and it
shows you a list of links to "See-dy" retailers.

And in the icebox a shivering, blue little Frank
Black.
[Who used to draw that figure, you know? The
wonderful little Frank Black guy with the iconic
shades? I couldn't find a gif.]

http://morrissey-solo.com

really well-done site. I like coming to the main page to read the news. the forums are always a mess because moz fans can be whining bitches, but otherwise it's a blast.

another one with similar news stories you click on and get the full story + discussion:

http://lloydcole.com/weblog/

very clean-looking site. I like the left column links... I guess I just like pages easy-to-read and navigate as opposed to flashy and hip. I visit band sites to get record & tour news and sometimes to read interviews. Maybe I'm in the minority?

I have been doing a lot of surfing and have only found some mediocre band sites and some good ones. I haven't come across a great one though. I think it must be hard to come up with a great one.

Here are some not so great ones. I think it's important to keep track of what is not so good so we can learn from their mistakes:

* Spoon: http://www.spoontheband.com/ what a pain to navigate
* Bjork: Too much info crammed in one space: http://bjork.com/ . To this sites credit, I didn't sign up for the forum. It looks like it's multimedia so that might be cool.
* White Stripes: http://www.whitestripes.com/ what a pain to have to hover over each icon to see what you want to click on
* The: http://www.thethe.com/. I like how its clear that you can see the different categories at the top. Actually, this is the best site I have come across.
* The Circle Jerks: http://www.officialcirclejerks.com/ . This is decent, except for the splash page is kind a pain.
* The Misfits: http://www.misfits.com/ . I like the bar thing at the top for navigation, but the slide thing to read the news is a pain.
* Beastie Boys: http://checkyourhead.beastieboys.com/cyh/index.html. That video that's huge when you open the page is too much.
* Pearl Jam: https://www.pearljam.com/ . This site is ok, but I really don't like how they have the little thumbnails at the top. I think it would be better if they had a large photo you could click on to get you there.
* Bauhaus: http://www.bauhausmusik.com/. That animation takes forever to get to the real site.

Here are some ones I like. They're not great though.:
* Elliot Smith: http://www.sweetadeline.net/. I think this is actually pretty good.
* Trans Am: http://www.transband.com/. I like the uncluttered nature of this site.
* New Order/Joy Diviion: http://www.neworderonline.com/. Conveys a lot of info in a not too cluttered way.
* Jane's Addiction: http://www.janesaddiction.com/. I would almost want to flip flop the left column with the right though.

Nice work, K, thanks. I like the Janes' Addiction site, in progress though it is, for its simple and elegant layout. The tour dates look great and are really readable. The news is front and centre. And I like the idea of integrating a spot for twitter. What I don't like is the top navigation, but where else to put it?

Pearl Jam's site is really nice, too. Nicer than Janes' in a lot of ways, actually, and closest to what I would like for here. They have a database of songs, albums, etc, too, a pretty nice looking forum (not sure what software they're using, looks like PHPBB or vBulletin), and their top navigation feels more usable somehow, maybe because it's not RIGHT at the top but underneath a header? Obviously, we'd lose some of the panels. I like the recent photos panel, if that aspect of our site ever becomes prominent and more well-worn. I don't like a lack of tour dates on the main page. And I would like to take what they have and build a wiki seemlessly into that interface. I'm not sure what other panels I'd put on the main page... maybe a summary of 'active topics' or whatever.

In fact, I think that the PJ site is a good jumping off point if you want to start discussing features and ideas.

Thanks again, Daisy.

Here's an alternative menu on the left.

http://www.bettieserveert.com

This site has a clean overall look, but gets messy deeper.

If you were to make a mapped image as part of a still background
you could keep the menu in place on the left side while the text
was scrolled.

I think that menu still uses too much space, but if they didn't
use the one long word it would only be an inch wide. But the
great thing about icons is that they are universal, and much
smaller. It's just it is so hard to relay some things. "Home"
is easy.

Maybe letters that look like the links they are describing.

I'll cast another vote in favour of simplicity. One site I quite like is that of The Bran Flakes:

http://www.thebranflakes.com/index.html

Easy to navigate, one window, everything where it is expected. The button to see the discography is not labelled with some overthought clever phrase. The only pop-up link is to the blog - the less of those, the better. I think fb.net has a strong enough collection of content that the website will not need any trickery in order to impress.

Nothing is ever something.

I'm not really sure what you are looking or not looking for, but the r.e.m. site murmurs.com might be of interest.

Thanks Dean & Skatealex. I think I was too harsh on PJ.

I like the sites that hammerhands, Crispy & Adam pointed out.

hammerhands, I like your idea of the menu on the left and then somehow keeping that part fixed while you scroll down. The menu on the left might give it a slightly different feel than the blackfrancis.net/frankblack.com site

Really like the TMBW.net wiki design as well. It's clean, attractive, and most of all intuitive.

I love how if you go to the song section, there's the "other links" with discussion, tabs, etc. Video embedded on the page and all, it's great! I'm going to waste a lot of hours there. If we could ever get that amount of info it would be sweet indeed. That's a lot of years of input going on there.

Yeah, it is very nice indeed and about the closest thing I (well, really Brian) have found to what I want for content on the new FBF.Net site. Also, the admin there is a really nice guy and I have been chatting pretty regularly with him about our potential move. He knows his stuff and I'm sure could answer a few questions if we go that Mediawiki route.

They've been having similar problems to us as far as server usage goes and have just moved to a new site which, so far, has been nothing but seamless and would cost about what we're paying now.

Jefrey, that is a cool site.

COF, do you know how long it took them to get off the ground? It looks like they put a lot of work into it with the content and linking.
