For the truly bored, please join me on a fast pasted journey to determine the best album covers that our man's discography has to offer.

Here is the list from when we did album survivor, are there any missing that we should add:

Come on Pilgrim
Surfer Rosa
Doolittle
Bossanova
Trompe Le Monde
B-Sides
Frank Black Self-Titled
TOTY
Cult of Ray
Oddballs
Frank Black and the Catholics Self-Titled
Pistolero
Dog in the Sand
Black Letter Days
Devil's Workshop
Show Me Your Tears
Sunday Sunny...
Snake Oil
One More Road for the Hit
FMRM
Christmass
Bluefinger
SVN Fingers
Petit Fours
Let The People Speak
Golem
NSE
Paley & Francis
Abbabubba
Indie Cindy
Head Carrier
Beneath the Eyrie

Do we want to add EPs, compilations, box sets, all those covers, etc?

I have no idea what kind of participation we will get on this. I will wait a few days to see if anyone wants more album art work added to the list, then we will start the voting, which will probably be vote two off at a time for the first several rounds.

Hopefully this will give a few of us something to do.

Let the games almost begin!

Oh man, thanks two reelers! That's what I get for copying and pasting my mistakes.

Here is updated list, and unless anyone has any more to add we can end round 1 tomorrow with the few of us who have already joined in.

And what is it about that FB&C's album cover? I don't like it either, but I've always wondered if there's something I'm missing, that maybe it's secretly brilliant and I just don't get it. Alas, it gets my vote as well.

Last day to vote in round 1 is tomorrow. We will try to move quickly through this, getting rid of a few albums a week until the final ten.

So far:

FB&C's - 3
DITS - 1

Come on Pilgrim
Surfer Rosa
Doolittle
Bossanova
Trompe Le Monde
B-Sides
Frank Black Self-Titled
TOTY
Cult of Ray
Oddballs
Frank Black and the Catholics Self-Titled
Pistolero
Dog in the Sand
Black Letter Days
Devil's Workshop
Show Me Your Tears
Sunday Sunny...
Snake Oil
One More Road for the Hit
Honeycomb
FMRM
Christmass
Bluefinger
SVN Fingers
Petit Fours
Let The People Speak
Golem
NSE
Paley & Francis
Abbabubba
Indie Cindy
Head Carrier
Beneath the Eyrie

Does SSMVGD have an official cover? Also I made this, if it might be helpful:

I left a spot for SSMVGD if something should go there.

Anyway, my vote would be Cult of Ray.

That is SUPER helpful Jamie thank you!

I feel like there was a cover to Sunday Sunny. Can one of the completists please confirm?

Alright, so round one is over and this is how it looked:

FB&C's - 3
DITS - 1
CoR - 1

So a spectacularly sounding album is one of the first to go as we say goodbye to the cover art of Frank Black and the Catholics.

Please make your round two votes now. Round two will close on Monday, EST, so you've got a few days to pray a little faster.

Gone:

Frank Black and the Catholics

Still surviving:

Come on Pilgrim
Surfer Rosa
Doolittle
Bossanova
Trompe Le Monde
B-Sides
Frank Black Self-Titled
TOTY
Cult of Ray
Oddballs
Pistolero
Dog in the Sand
Black Letter Days
Devil's Workshop
Show Me Your Tears
Sunday Sunny...
Snake Oil
One More Road for the Hit
Honeycomb
FMRM
Christmass
Bluefinger
SVN Fingers
Petit Fours
Let The People Speak
Golem

Indie Cindy

FB&TC and Abbabubba are shockers but The Cult of Ray is infamous. Got to vote for that.

I'm sure The Cult of Ray will get voted out very soon, and it certainly was the first really bad album cover (quickly followed by FB&TC's interestingly, maybe he was going for a new direction) but CoR the album has really grown on me over the last 25 years so I can't vote for it just yet.

I'm going with Indie Cindy. I always thought that cover was horrible on its own, but being the Pixies "comeback" album made it even worse.

So here's the tally, and we've got about 36 more hours until round 2 is over:

Pistolero - 1
Golem - 1
Cult of Ray - 1
Indie Cindy - 1

P.S. everybody feel free to make your case as strongly as you like, you may convince others.

P.P.S. - Discoking your comment made me smile re: Golem. The picture seems shaky indeed :-)

No kidding? Wow.

Has anyone ever asked Frank about this cover? It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on it.

Latest poll:

Pistolero - 1
Golem - 1
Cult of Ray - 2
Indie Cindy - 1

Each round we vote off an album, based on the album artwork. We vote from our least favorite to our favorite. The album that survives wins.

While CoR is ugly, it's ugly in what seems to be an intentionally garish proto-Tim and Eric aesthetic. Therefore I'm in. Frank Black and the Catholics and Pistolero, on the other-hand, just look cheap.

Yeah. It was probably 98 or 99, I was into Nirvana and knew the Pixies by reputation, but hadn't heard them and didn't want to get into another defunct band. But I read the main guy from the Pixies was still making music, so I checked at the record store. All they had was a copy of Cult of Ray, and after seeing the cover I was like, never mind. In all honestly I doubt I would have bought it either way, but the cover definitely turned me off.

Come on Pilgrim - shave your back or something, you (know you want to) can clearly shave your head but you insist on showing me your hairy back. I know it's all in the name of art, but really it's just a hairy back and a bald head at the end of the day.

I'm gonna go for Indie Cindy because I don't like it much plus when I found out that the first Pixies 2.0 album was going to be the 3 EPs strung together I was major pissed off.

I will vote Indie Cindy again as well.

The songs have grown on me.

But when I first saw the album cover (and the EP covers) I said to myself, "I've got a bad feeling about this."

Not particularly a fan of Indie Cindy or Head Carrier's artwork so put me down for one or both of them.

I really like the Christmass artwork myself though - it really suits the title of the album.
