Odds are it means this was a track he actually recorded years ago for this planned CD, but it simply never came together is long overdue for commercial release.

That's the case with a lot of tribute compilations of this sort, they sit around unfinished for years or sometimes decades, waiting for the financing or all the right submissions / permissions to come in.

I am betting FBF's contribution was cut back when he was still going under the FB handle, and so it remains branded thusly on the final product.

Could be...

Or, perhaps that's just how long they have been talking to him about this project, and now that it's finally out they made a goof and referred to him under his old stage name....

Ya know, maybe he has simply decided to segregate his use of the Black Francis moniker to Pixies projects only, freeing him to record / do whatever else he wants under the handle of Frank Black.

I actually hope that's the case, as it makes a certain sort of sense, and is easier for some folks to wrap their heads around, as "Frank Black's" career can continue on peripatetically, while "Black Francis" is tied to a specific, ongoing concern...

Here it is, posted by Reid Paley on Facebook this afternoon

https://fatpossumrecords.bandcamp.com/track/frank-black-numbers-on-paper?fbclid=IwAR3boMgvcBCRGq0-FCaVTiRPE1zacQ7MdbPZo7-Zgenr-uJCeuGfQW-NsvA

What Reid posted (on the Reid Paley Trio Facebook page):
"So my friend asked me to act as musical director/arranger and pull together his contribution to this Mose Allison tribute. I've been enthusiastically listening to Mose since I was 17 and Numbers On Paper is the only one of his songs I actually had to think about an approach for. Imagine that. So I went slightly outre with it.

"We've got James Murray on drums, Tony Maimone on bass, Eric Drew Feldman on piano and mellotron, and of course Frank Black on vocals. I'm on guitar and harmonica."

By the way, how incredibly delightful it is to (a) listen to a new song recorded under the name "Frank Black," (b) see that the wonderful collection of musicians who played on it comprise Reid Paley, Eric Drew Feldman, Tony Maimone, and James Murray, (c) dig their take on this terrific Mose Allison song, (d) wonder that just the other day I cued up the video of Pixies' "Allison" and basked in its particular joy, and (e) come any post about all this right here in this forum! This forum that still lives, after all these years!

Long live Frank Black!

well that's my day made. Love the song and love all the players on this one. EDF and Tony Maimone, oh man.

Reid Paley's harmonica is really cooking on this one too.

Fantastic.

What a lovely song. Some top harmonica work by Paley.

Iggy's song is nice too. There are some comments from Charles in this article as well:

Love this!! Oh how I pine for some frank black again! This forum was a mainstay of my earlier life. Good times for sure. So I have not read through all the links: is it an older recording or is this a brand spanking new recording? Trying to view this all on my phone and failing!

I'd rather be anywhere or doing anything

Nate, couldn't have said it better myself. I love seeing Frank Black (the name) still lives. And thanks for the link. Superabounder, here check this link to stream this new recording:

it is quite different from the original, isn't it?

original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTt4UyulOCg
a live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZo9URtGFa8
tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U2jF3yUXuE

this tom waits song always reminds me of the tribute version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=107dADrIVBk
(am i crazy, or are they indeed similar?)

it's educational
