I haven't had cable tv since 2009.

Had it installed yesterday just to watch TP3.

Looking forward to discussing with any forum members who are going on the journey.

What's your impressions of the new Twin Peaks? I haven't watched yet but I remember binge watching the originals about 15 years ago.

I thought they were great at the time. Looking back I have mixed feelings what with the soap opera like effect with a lot of episodes and the non linear plot.

I know I know, Lynch is a surrealist and he didn't direct all of the original episodes but there was a lot of filler in the originals (remember the guy with the train set?). However in saying that the main characters were pretty memorable (Sherilyn Fenn especially!)

For me these days Lynch can be hit or miss, loved Mulholland Drive but Inland Empire was a slog. Maybe my brain just isn't imaginative enough to 'get it' but it was so non linear it frustrated me.

Love Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart was decent. I haven't watched Eraserhead since I was 17, once was enough and I probably wouldn't appreciate it as much 20 years later.

But yeah looking forward to new Twin Peaks but expecting Lynch to outLynch (out-troll?) us and even himself in his long awaited return.

First I have to say that I am a Lynch fan much the way I am a Frank Black fan. If anyone else were to have recorded Kiss My Ring on FMRM I wouldn't have even gotten through it one time. But because it's Frank, I've probably listened to it well over 100 times. I just like this guy.

Same with Lynch for me. Bad David Lynch is better than good Stanley Kubrick, just like bad Frank Black is better than good Beatles. I have only seen the first two episodes and of course I thought they were brilliant. I am actually hoping that this third season will not answer any of the questions from season 2. Why do we need answers any way. Who cares how a roller coaster works; just sit back and enjoy the ride.

It's also worth pointing out that Frank has sited many times Lynch's influence on his own work. It's safe to say without David Lynch there would be no Pixies or Frank Black as we know them.

I'm not sure how many times you've seen INLAND EMPIRE Stevio10, but I would give it another viewing if I were you. Like a lot of FBF, it will grow on you.

Yes, that means that Indie Cindy is a better album than anything that Paul Mcartney and John Lennon ever did.

That was fun to say.

it's likely more to do with myself having less time / tolerance than anything else.

I bought Inland Empire on DVD when it came out and I think I've watched it about 4 times. I've tried to not 'decode' the meaning (it's all subjective anyway right?) and while it's imagery stands out over pretty much every other movie I've watched since, unfortunately so does the feeling of frustration!

It is memorable, just not all for the right reasons for me and maybe I compare it (unjustly) to Mulholland Drive.

I liked how he got Donovan to do one of his Lynch Foundation concerts, he does have a great taste of music.

Can I watch this without knowing much about the OS?

I watched the first 20 minutes, and it reminded me of 2001. The Space Odyssey.

So in the midst of BCS3 and Fargo 3 and all the rest, I don't have time to review the original box sets. last time I tried I just couldn't get in to it.

Maybe it's not for me. I had a picture of Mädchen Amick on my wall in 1993, just because I was at a poster festival and I was young and I wanted to fuck her.

I guess with anything, some would say you must watch the OS before watching the new stuff. Either way I don't envy your position. I watched episodes 3 & 4 last night and found them to be maddening, and boring, and I loved them, but they're probably the craziest things I've ever tried to figure out.

So have fun with it! If nothing out you get to see Madchen in episode 2!

I went through a similar array of emotions and thoughts, and the more I didn't understand it the more I wanted.

I mean the 1-4 of the new series.

Maybe I should I watch it back to front? I'm in a unique position to do that, so why waste it.

Lynch certainly knows how to convey horror, and make you feel uncomfortable. David Duchovny in drag was my interlude. Who knew that was going to happen?

I'm sure I'll miss loads of nuances, but be all the richer for a fresh set of organs.

All I remember was my friend from school, ten years my senior, eccentric character who turned out to be gay and who I have not seen since. He studied film and TV arts at the glasgow school of arts and is the first person to inform Kirsty Wark of John Smith's death, the leader of the labour party before Tony Bliar when it happpened.

Then another friend was going on about in between then and now...

The new episodes are.

Lynch has a very interesting way of using very little effects, or low budget to create an atmosphere of fear and alarm, he makes it real.

And I'm a big fan of surrealism in any form.

The scene with Kyle Mc and the girl (without spoiling too much) was real as fuck, pure Stockholm syndrome. That Clockwork Orange, real but not explicit. More sinister and interesting, yet real but do I want to think about it that deep.

Yes pot! I love the idea of your watching it front to back. I can only imagine what that would be like for you. Enjoy!

I just finished episode 4 last night, and I think we don't even realize how privileged we are to be witnessing this. The master at work, slowly revealing an 18 hour film piece by piece. This is legendary stuff happening right in front of us.

And I don't think we should have to be worried about saying too much on this thread. I think a spoiler alert is a given at this point.

P.S.
To your point about Lynch conveying horror, I often recommend Lynch films to people who are looking for a good horror movie. Lynch is not considered a horror director (he's unclassifiable of course, he is his own category), but most of his films have truly terrifying and creepy moments on par with anything else out there.

Episode 5 shows just how great this season is going to be (and already is). There is such attention to detail here it is breathtaking.

My only wish is that by the time we get to the final episode the grand total of questions answered is zero, and we get to have season four.

I'm getting in to it Bedbug, but I've no idea what's going on. I also don't know why I have no idea what's going on, is it because I've not seen the OS or because it's just like this. I don't want to know, so please alert me to any major OS spoilers please if you can.

The flashback to the OS with the two guys laughing insanely, one of which I presume is a demon that has possessed Agent Cooper, who appears to have split in to two different people, the other of which might actually be the demon?

You know all those horror films from the 80's that really used to creep you out, but nowadays the worst you can hope for in a horror film is that it makes you jump, or puts you off your dinner? There have been a few good ones recently (It Follows) but by and large the advancements in cinema technology have inadvertently lowered the potency of the modern horror genre, torture porn for shock value. But Lynch has this way of portraying freaky scenes, and horror without using much more than the same basic effects that were around 25 years ago. And he does it in an arty way that isn't always slightly boring, and doesn't necessarilly have to employ a concept or a premise.

Either way, enjoying Kyle Mclachlan's character portrayals in it, I had no idea he was so handsome.

What I want to know most of all though is why have all the people in Twin Peaks aged at a slower rate than me over the past 25 years?

Oh and Captain Pothead whatever he's called, doing the internet video blogs. More positivity for the cannabis community is real.

I'm sorry I don't have time to comment on this thread. I'm suffering from a form of mental illness as a result of the politcal upheaval going on right now in my country.

Tamarym sounds good there. Thanks for sharing.

I hope Lynch picks some really ill-fitting band for one of the shows. Or lets Leland perform.

Wooo Nine Inch nails this week!

A rare sober post from me. Don't know if anyone has caught this week's episode yet? I'd recommend dropping an acid tab if you want to have any chance of making sense of it. Jupiter and Beyond The Infinite much? Definitely lots of 2001 references in there again this week. I spotted some in the first episode of this season.

----

As for the current political landscape in the UK, not to digress too far from the topic of the thread. What a clusterfuck. We seem to be stuck with this government who have been an absolute disaster for the past 7 years, and think that the only way to pull the country out of this mess is for them to stay in power dictating the odds, even if it means makiong dodgy cash for votes deal with the DUP.

I wrote to my local tory MP last night, who just took the seat from the SNP and urged him to vote against this in parliament this week and he replied with the usual tory rhetoric of Jeremy Corbyn is not up to the job, we need a stable government..

I wrote back to him and quoted some statistics.

In 2010 the tories formed a coalition government based on an approximate 23% of the electorate vote. This increased to 24% in 2015 and 29% in 2017. These are % of the electorate, not % of the votes cast so voter apathy and other factors are at play.

I also calculated the share of the votes between the 5 main left wing parties (Labour, LD, Greens, Plaid Cymru and SNP) for the election just held in 2017 and they took in total about 52.5% of the votes cast (16.9M). Compare that with ~44.4% (14.3M) going to mostly the tories and UKIP(0.5M), the two main right wing parties.

So if the 5 main left wing parties banded together and formed a Progressive Alliance, something which was talked about and rejected by all of them before the election, they'd have won the election by a landslide. Of course, had they formed an alliance beforehand the result would likely have been different because some people wouldn't have liked the idea, and others wouldn't have understood what a progressive alliance was.

I don't think it's difficult to argue that the tories have absolutely no mandate to govern anymore, nor have they even had one for at least 25 years.

For me the best way out of this message is a yes vote at Indyref2 for Scotland to negotiate a way back into Europe.

Perhaps the best motivation for a yes vote is the tories continuing with their hard brexit and controversial allegiance with the DUP. Their continuation up to Indyref2 is all the motivation needed to secure a yes vote. And if it's not well we're screwed anyway.

Alex Salmond should do his own version of Indie Cindy - 'put this down for the record it's more than political blether. Tactical votes and Tory cunts made me a fucking beggar. I put the hung in hung parliament. Indyref Cindy be in love with me'

Sorry Twin Peaks! I will watch you soon!

Trouble is we've got indy for Scotland supporters who want brexit, and those who don't, and unionist supporters on either side of the brexit fence as well. And now we've got Scottish indy supporters leaning towards Corbyn because they just want rid of the tories. This election saw a great number of people also voting tactically, which I did but it still didn't stop the tories gaining a seat from the SNP in my constituency. Kezia Dugdale is also under fire for telling people in Scotland to vote tory to block the SNP!

It's a bloody mess.

And the unionists who complain that we want another pop at what was claimed to be a "once in a generation" opportunity all too easily forget about Project Fear and The Vow, lot's of lies and broken promises, and possibly electoral fraud involved.

And now today Sturgeon is saying there might not be an indyref2 until 2021!

I give up. Time to emigrate.

Oh and Twin Peaks and that.

TP S3 E8 is the craziest AND scariest thing that's ever been on tv. That was insane.

Let's all remember that when Kubrick was filming The Shining he made the cast watch Eraserhead repeatedly.

Lynch is his own force. Kubrick is pretty cool too.

I think I Switched You would be a great song for TP3. A lot of thematic elements that coincide (at least in the abstract), heavy base, false ending (arguably), and a song that really tests the audience's endurance.

I appreciate any feedback from people who are supposed to know what's going on because they watched the original series. Up until now I have been unable to gauge the level of craziness of series 3 against it's predecessors.

Dr Phlox from Star Trek Enterprise!

I like that.

As a long time Trekkie fan OS and TNG I was disappointed in the Rick Berman spinoffs, but Enterprise is actually pretty good if you take the time to get into it.

Keep in mind that TP S3 is an 18 hour movie.

Lots of movies keep you lost 5/18 or 11/18 of the way through, and this is no different,

Plus, "understanding" is not the sole point. Do you have to understand Vamos or Velvety or Virginia Reel to enjoy it?

S3 is like nothing else, not even other Lynch stuff.

I will say that the scene in Episode 10 with the grandmother and the robotic bear saying "Hello Johnny, how are you today" was the most painful thing I've had to watch since I don't know what, way worse than Clockwork.

Good show so far

I have no problem with not understanding things, in fact it's a quality that I favour in a film. Too much information can ruin a plot, cf. the Alien prequels.

I like the way TV shows are basically like really long films now. TV series are becoming long films, and films are being produced as episodes in a series but you have to wait 1-2 years for each episodes instead of a week.

I liked the Hello Johnny, How are you today? scene. I'm sure the thing, can't remember what it was but a bit of it looked like a bowl of weed.

The fuck scene with Dougie's sexy wife screaming his name in the middle of the night and Pierce Gagnon waking up and wondering what the fuck was going on was comedy gold. I'm really glad he's in it he's a great wee actor. He was brilliant in Looper and I look forward to more films with him in it.

The band at the end this week was a bit of a dissapointment though I have to say.. talk about overplaying/oversinging the part.

It really is looking like, with 5 episodes left, Lynch is just going to give us more of the same mesmerizing / irritating mystery, and then return to his painting and sculpting. I'll be surprised if we get anything we wanted, or thought we wanted, and I'll be surprised if we care either way.
