Twenty years old today. So it's, like, not a teenager anymore, right?

20 years, wow...how about a remastered special 3 disc edition TOTYXX? Or will we have to wait for 5 more years for the gold treatment and tour?

Is it really 20 years? Holy crap. That record is a masterpiece. I still, to this day, cannot believe that they recorded all the music before FB got down to the business of writing lyrics for it. The songs are so good, love it.

Yeah, I remember an interview where he was explaining that, for some reason, he just wasn't getting around to it. He's also said that he always writes the music first, so perhaps this wasn't totally unusual. But in the interview I read, he said that it was really taking him a long time and at some point, perhaps to try to encourage him to do it, EDF started trying vocal ideas and then he just felt like, OK, wait , I have to write some lyrics. I wish I could find that interview because it was a long time ago, and I may be getting this wrong to some extent. But that was the gist of it.

It's pretty incredible when you listen to the album - the melodies/ lyrics are so strong. Maybe he had the melodies in mind but not the words? Even then...

Frank told the story behind Teenager of the Year in the press release for the Best of album back in '06 or '07. He went through all of his albums and commented on their behind-the-scenes stories. Frank had writer's block when it came to lyrics so he just pumped out music tracks, which wasn't much of a problem for him. When producers Eric Drew Feldman and Al Clay, budget-minded as producers must be, felt that this had gone on enough, they wrote their OWN lyrics for one of the music tracks in a parody of Frank's style. This HORRIFIED Frank, which was Feldman and Clay's intention, and finally motivated him to write the lyrics in short order.

A strange and wonderful anecdote behind a strange and wonderful album.

Didn't he have to do a last-minute all-nighter writing the lyrics for the first solo album?

I find it peculiar that after the first 2 FB albums he and 4AD parted ways. hindsight is a great thing but what was the reasoning behind it? I know the album sales of TOTY werent amazing but as a label 4AD werent exactly the equivalent of Geffen and most bands on the label had a modest indie following at best. Was the budget and touring costs for the members of the Frank Black Experience too much in comparison to the reward? In a way could Last Splash have usurped TOTY considering FB debut did really well in the UK charts. And did the change of label ultimately prompt the somewhat sparser sound on COR and future Catholic albums? Id be interested to know because in hindsight 4AD made a huge error imho

Did a bit of googling and found an interview somewhere where it says FB asked to leave 4AD and they graciously agreed. So any crackpot theories in my post are way off, my bad.

My English not good but this Frank best work. Make me want rock out. New Pixies seem ok. I want like but not best. I listen with my brother on cd player. We play for girl we bring over. They don't seem care. Most girl here listen Kid Rock and Celine Dion. I still had sex with blonde girl. Was good night even thogh they don't know Pixies. Wish Frank come Eastern Europe and play Teenager song. Would make me happiest man alive.
