| When you've gone through the entire The Fall back catalogue and eventually gotten a bit bored with them, just pick any band from the new UK lo-fi punk scene and listen to them. They're all copying Mark E Smith and most of them are complete shit. You'll feel entirely refreshed by The Fall again after a couple of Fontaines DC tracks. #TheBlandAge |

Saw The Divine Comedy a few weeks ago and it was a great gig. There's a strong case to be made that Neil Hannon is the best songwriter to have come out of Ireland. |

Been listening to this band all day, I'm really excited about them. (almost as excited when I discovered Drahla)
Imagine a female Eddie Argos talky singing to some nice Les Savy Fav-esque riffs. The Les Savy Fav quitarist himself is quite Joey Santiago-esque himself so you could say this band are overall a little bit Pixies-esque (but with perhaps slightly more discordant Sarah Nixey-esque vocals)
They've released two 6 track EPs with year and both of them are big double thumbs up from me. |

A few weeks ago I got some free tickets to a Raconteurs show and ended up right on the barricade. It was a great show and afterwards I relistened to Jack White’s whole discography and then started digging back into some classic Detroit garage rock. Such a great scene.
Oh, and I played Headache on my radio show last week. A man called in to say he really liked my music choices and that Headache is one of his favorite songs. That was pretty cool!

I feel bad I haven't given Skeleton Tree and now Ghosteen a proper try. I can't help thinking every word and note must be about his son's untimely death and I find that utterly depressing.

The "new" Leonard Cohen is wonderful. It's weird to get a posthumous album like this, but his son did a beautiful job finishing the songs.

There are definite eras but as a whole in each era there is much to love.
Try starting with the best of CD, 50,000 falls fans cant be wrong, its a great place to start and get an idea of the eras.
If you like that, move onto the Peel sessions, they were almost like a house band for John Peel and did a session most years for a couple of decades.
A lot of the music on those Peel sessions is absolutely fantastic. After that you will be able to guide yourself through the albums and styles. Enjoy the ride. |

^^ Fall Peel Sessions were often superior versions in my opinion. Eat Y'Self Fitter, one of my all time faves, is better in every way than the one on 'Perverted By Language' for instance.

Recently got my hands on a huge stack of Birthday Party vinyl with Nick's signature on a few of them so I've been listening pretty intently these past few days. As interesting as Nick's new album is. I miss his noisy garage sound. Also a bunch of original Meat Puppets vinyl with some very cool signatures- it appears that the band not only signed the covers but drew cartoons all over them. My favorite is a fish drawn by Cris. Apparently all of these signatures were done back in the 80s or so, when the bands came and visited our radio station. I wonder if I could get the Pixies to come by the station sometime.
As far as new bands go I'm listening to lots of Black Midi and Uranium Club. I agree with Pot, Drahla are really wonderful. Brittany Howard too.

Revisiting 'The Gun Club' discography, such a great band. Fire of Love often gets credited as their best (and influencing early Pixies sound) but they were so much more than that album. Miami is such a good album too - Mother of Earth sounds like it could have been on a later Catholics album.

I felt the same, though when I'm in the mood for something a bit wilder from Nick I've been listening to Grinderman, a side project for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
Their first album is great, stripped down and raw - think they wanted to channel the Stooges I think they said in the press release at the time around 07. Their second album is very good too and there have been rumours of a 3rd instalment so fingers crossed. |
