Disarmingly charming, foolishly romantic and
unapologetically thunderous when needed, The Longest
Meow lays bare (sorry about that) Bobby's willingness to
do anything to get the girl, even if we all know it'll
somehow end badly. From dynamic atmospherics and
psychedelic melancholy to pulsing T. Rex glam boogie and
down and dirty southern ROCK, Bobby fearlessly wears
his heart on his stained and sweaty shirtsleeve. Check
out how he'll even go all coffeehouse on a Pixies cover if
he thinks it'll do the trick! (He did, after all, name check
Black Francis in the song "Dig Down" on his debut
Bloodshot CD and recently appeared on Frank Black's
2005 release, Honeycomb.)

http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/artists/bobbybarejr/

In the late 90’s, he fronted the boss hog rock band, Bare
Jr. With their two records, Boo-tay and Brainwasher, they
memorably rocked out on a Nirvana-on-Skynryd-not-
Sabbath groove, more indebted to the homebrew than
"The Other H." These days he keeps himself even busier
by appearing on albums by indie rock heroes like the
Silver Jews and Frank Black.

Every track, from the country slide of “Back to Blue,” to the sparse cover of “Where is My
Mind,” seethe with the delight of their creation. The feeling transfers to the listener as well
on an album demands attention as both freakish experiment and belle of the ball.

Notes: Pixies fans will notice track two of the album is a stripped-down, soulful
take on the band's "Where Is My Mind" off the Surfer Rosa album. Guests on the
album include such notables as My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Lambchop's
Deanna Varagona. Album drops September 26th.

Bobby Bare Jr. touts his new Young
Criminals Starvation League album
The Longest Meow as “11 tracks
recorded by 11 musicians in 11
hours.” But when pressed, Bare
admits those numbers are a little
fudged. There are 12 tracks on the
record, one of which is an acoustic
cover of the Pixies’ “Where Is My
Mind,” recorded solo by Bare before
the daylong session even began; another is a 20-second intro to the first
song, “The Heart Bionic.” So call it 10 tracks, really, and even those were
extensively demoed by Bare with My Morning Jacket’s Patrick Hallahan and
Carl Broemel, then rehearsed by YCSL. There were some after-the-fact
overdubs and vocal fixes, so [i]The Longest Meow didn’t really come together
over one long inspired day in the studio.

"The Longest Meow," Bobby Bare, Jr., Sept. 26

I received an advance copy of this CD a month or so ago and still can't keep it out of my
stereo for very long. A blend of space country and Beatles-style pop, with lyrics that are
alternately odd and heart-breaking, this is one of my favorite releases of 2006. A
collection of distinct originals, "The Longest Meow" also includes a solo acoustic
rendition of The Pixies "Where Is My Mind" that is as emotional as a last-call sing-along
after a very long, strange night at the pub.

Bobby Bare Jr. - The Longest Meow (Bloodshot) recorded in a single day this past March
with members of My Morning Jacket and Lambchop; featuring a laid-back cover of The
Pixies' “Where Is My Mind”.

On this album's second-to-last track, he goes so far as to
offer a stripped-down, soulful take on the Pixies' alt-rock classic
"Where is My Mind."

BOBBY BARE JR.

RECOMMENDED (10/05/06 @
Emo's)

“11 songs, 11 people, 11 hours.”
That’s the tagline for Bobby Bare
Jr.’s fourth album, The Longest Meow
(Bloodshot), his first in two years.
Featuring My Morning Jacket’s Carl
Broemel and Patrick Hallahan,
Meow is Southern romp with a few
indie twists, including a cover of the
Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” Fresh
off a summer tour, locals Grand
Champeen get things started,
along with locals Chalk Outlines. A
Lone Star with a side of sassy
angst, please. - Melanie Haupt

Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals Starvation League - The Longest Meow (Bloodshot Records)

The Longest Meow comprises 11 genre-bending songs, all recorded in 11 hours with 11 musicians. This is Bare's
best album yet, and he proves it, from rockers such as "Heart Bionic" and "Borrow Your Cape," to alt-country
numbers like "Demon Valley" and "Stop Crying." You'll also catch a stripped-down version of the Pixies'
"Where Is My Mind." Members of My Morning Jacket, Lampchop, and Clem Snide all show up to play on the
album, and you can hear through the music that recording this record must have been a blast. - kyle j.

BOBBY BARE JR., ''WHERE IS MY MIND (PIXIES COVER)''
This isn't your older brother's ''Where Is My Mind.'' The son of country stalwart
Bobby Bare, Junior takes all of the stringy distortion away from this Pixies classic,
leaving only haunting acoustic guitar and pained vocals behind. The reinvention
highlights the song's desolate, half-insane lyrics, which have never sounded
creepier.

Nice one, Carl, I'll check it out

http://www.mundanesounds.com/2006/10/bobby-bare-jr.html

You do a Pixies cover, and you've referenced Black Francis on your debut. Have you heard from Frank Black, and has he ever given you any feedback?

Yeah! Actually, I sang on his new album. It was really fun. I walked into the studio after they played the Ryman, and there was Ian McLagan of the Small Faces on keyboard, Levon Helm on drums, Steve Kropper on guitar, Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick on bass, and everybody in the room was rock and roll hall of fame. It was amazing, and they let me sing background on vocals.

Did he give you any sage advice?

I just shook his hand and said, "Hey, I'm your biggest fan!" (chuckles)

Good find, Soren! BBJ's version is kind of quietly haunting, I guess!

Merry Christmas!

Loving this version of Where Is My Mind. I've grown abso-fucking-lutely tired of this song, but hearing it from another artist gives it some new life. Thanks for posting it, Carl.

Oh, and this begins to answer my question about whether FB is a great guitar player. No, he's not. He's a chord strummer, and he plays either loud or soft. Bobby Bare Jr. is a great guitar player. His playing is so dynamic. I love it.

This version of "Where Is My Mind?" somehow reminds me of Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," the Leonard Cohen song. And it makes me want to buy more Bobby Bare Jr.

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

The oft-mentioned Pixies cover--Bare turns in a folksy,
disarming version of "Where Is My Mind"--was just something
that felt right.

"I was fishing around with all kinds of different stuff," he
mentions. "I tried some Electric Light Orchestra songs, for
example, and I was trying to see what felt the best in my mouth. I
love that Pixies tune."

Bare's connections to Frank Black don't end there--Black's Pixies
alter ego, Black Francis, gets a shout out as early as Bare's debut album (the track "Dig Down" from 2002's
"Young Criminals' Starvation League"). Bare was also among the armada of Nashville and other musicians to
serve Black on 2005's Honeycomb and 2006's Fastman Raiderman, the alt-rocker's well-received roots/country
forays.

"It was standing in a room, and, oh, there's Steve Cropper and Levon Helm, and Ian McLagan of the Small
Faces, and Tom Petersson [of Cheap Trick]--you know, all people who are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or
will be," Bare recalls. "I sang backing vocals. It was pretty amazing."

THE SLIP WITH BOBBY BARE JR.

When: Monday
, June 25, 2007
Where:SPACE Gallery, 538 Congress St. Portland
Cost:
Category:
Music
Description:
Bobby Bare Jr. is something of a songwriting legend who's from the Nashville
scene. His most recent record, "The Longest Meow" (Bloodshot Records),
contains 11 songs recorded in 11 hours with 11 musicians.

I did a whiz-through listening to all 11 tracks. Here's my adjective
commentary:

Strange, chaotic, astute, twangy, daffy, lively, unruly, sweet, and likeable.
Oh, and he does a killer cover of one of my favorite Pixies songs, "Where is
My Mind?"

The Slip is an avant-rock trio comprised of bassist Marc Friedman and
brothers Andrew (drums, guitar) and Brad (vocals). It formed when the three
moved to Boston after high school. They played out incessantly through the
late '90s; picking up a slew of fans along the way and have been, to quote
"The Muppet Movie," "moving right along" ever since.

Rolling Stone recently named them an "artist to watch." Yours Truly recently
listened to tracks from their most recent record called "Eisenhower" and am
pleased to report that you are NOT going to want to give The Slip the slip
once you hear them play.

Pink Floyd or Beatles thoughts may swirl about your head and maybe some
Talking Heads. No complaining about this being a Monday night show. It's
summertime and we gotta gather our rosebuds while we may, and this is a
certifiably good reason to do just that. - AIMSEL L. PONTI

The Slip with Bobby Bare Jr., 9 p.m. Monday, The Space Gallery, 18+, $15,
tickets at virtuous.com or at Bull Moose locations

Bare Jr., who recorded The Pixies' “Where is My Mind” for “Meow,” lent
his skills to Pixies leader Frank Black's solo effort “Bluefinger,” which
will come out in September.

“It was my way of saying thank you,” Bare Jr. said. “The Pixies were a
great band. Greatness is inspiring. I was inspired by a lot of great
ones, Shel, my dad, the My Morning Jacket guys. Maybe some of that
greatness can rub off.”

This is a good example of the positive side of spam.

I never would have found this song referenced in this thread if it weren't for the spambots.

Thank you spambots for making a difference in my life.
