Well-- I guess if you want to start a support group-- if that is what you want, that would make this an unique topic :) |

Cold Turkey.
You have to seriously want to quit, then just quit. Everybody says it is soooo hard to quit, but if your mindset is correct it will be easy. At first you should limit your time with friends who smoke, or social situations where smoking is common. After a couple of weeks without a smoke these situations shouldn't bother you anymore. |

addition is a funny thing...tobacco addicts and crackheads are more similar in their addictions than people think. you can lock a crackhead up for monthsin jail, get it outta their system, but until they change habbits, including saying "no" and never cheating, it's probally keep kicking.
you gotta really want it to keep it up. g'luck. |

Well, my previous attempt to quit went down the shitter....
I guess I just don't have that right mindset yet. I'm not willing to let go. Especially when drinking and socializing in a bar. I give myself till 30. at 30, I will quit cold turkey. Yeah right....WHY AM I SO WEAK?????? |

Hey, Alex. That is good news. Good luck and come back here if you need any advise. It's not always easy. But I know, eventually you will do it. |

Oh there is no hope with that...why don't you take up smoking to cope? Feed addiction with addiction I always say. |

You have to be capable of some serious denial in order to drop cold turkey.
If you can say to yourself in your mind: "I am not a smoker." or "I am a non smoker." and ram this all the way down into your psyche, you can quit. Someone offers you a smoke, you say "I don't smoke." . You don't say "I'm trying to quit." . If you say that, you're actually saying "I really want a cigarette and I want you to pressure me into smoking one."
You live in absolute denial of the fact that you are an addict for about 3 months. It gets a bit easier after that. After six months, you should be home free if you remember "I am a non smoker."
If you manage to quit, don't ever EVER start again. If you do, I'll find you and make you eat an entire carton.

Well, I have suffered a relapse and begun smoking after two months of non smoking. I think Kimstanleyrobinsons' advice to deny the smoker mind set is what will work. This thread has me convinced to choose a quit date and stick to it. Never quit quitting. Smoking sucks. |

Good! Me neither, and I am not going to.
Supposedly I have more of a psychological addiction to cigarettes, which basically means that I like to smoke because of what is, embarassingly enough, an oral fixation, rather than a physical addiction. I don't "nic out" or start getting shakes or a headache from not smoking at certain times during the day. Rather, I tend to get really nervous and fidgety in certain social situations, where once smoking a cigarette would've provided a good outlet for this phenomenon. It would've provided me basically with something to do.
At work I have been chewing on toothpicks and have had the tendency to bite my nails more than I did before.
In some ways I would rather have the physical addiction, because at least when you're over the withdrawal symptoms for that you are in the clear. (Ideally, anyway.) Being psychologically addicted forces you to take a long hard look at your psyche and figure out why you're so nervous about nothing in particular.

Read Alan Carr's Easy Way to Give up Smoking. It's super cheesy, very repetitive but costs about the same as a packet of cigarettes and WORKS! (as long as you finish the book that is) |

I've quit a couple of times (not successfull in the long rund obviously... but i've lasted a year both times) - but - i found it very helpfull to expose myself to places and situations i usually smoked as soon as possible. For instance, when drinking alchol i always smoked alot. So - i drunk alot. He he. The strange thing is - one gets so much more drunk after quitting because one replaces smoking behavior with drinking behavior. Anyway - it worked. The feeling of tackling situations I knew it would be difficult to handle was pretty good and gave me confidence that i could do it.
First time I quit was, by the way, a result of massive propaganda on TV - the world's smoke-free day or something. Infomercial after informercial on black lungs - i hate such propaganda - but it worked. |

Congrats to Alex and Glacial.... that is so cool! It's hardest it seems when you first quit...so it is still going to be hard but it will gradually get easier.. You guys are awesome!
I guess kinda to echo some of what some have you have been saying... that oral fixaton is huge having gum or mints or even a pen or pencil to gnaw on helped me.
Way to go! |

I quit for three years and then took it up again when I moved to Spain (think peer pressure but you have 35 million peers). I may lose the desire to have a cigarette at some stage but I also happen to feel we´re eternal so it matters not a jot.
