director of such classics as FASTER PUSSYCAT, KILL KILL!!!!, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, and SUPERVIXENS.
here was a man who understood what movies should be about: chicks with big breasts kicking ass.
(it's a possibly little known fact that he wrote, shot, edited, produced and directed nearly all his films. pretty impressive).

yeah, it is sad but he had a long career. people tend to think of his films as just schlocky skin flicks, but he's actually an extremely talented filmmaker (with a great sense of humor)

What a buzzkill that would be, to think of some old dead guy when some big round boobies present themselves in your face. I bet he bought the Star Wars trilogy yesterday and saw the scene with the CGI crooners in Jabba's den and he died of disgust.

Director Russ Meyer, whose soft core porn films, "The Immoral Mr Teas," "Vixen" and "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" earned him millions of dollars and the title of Hollywood's "King Leer," has died at age 82, his film company said on Wednesday.
Soft core porn? I thought soft core porn was people having sex on film but without the graphic penetration shots. Meyer's films weren't porn. |

Most people of my generation will know him best for the intro to the Sublime song Smoke Two Joints, which is from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (which was co-written by Roger Ebert).

i never heard or seen any of this, reaffirming I am an uncultured redneck drunk dumbass once again.
And to make it doubley fucked, Faster PussyCat is one of my favorite bands, a hair band from the late 80's. I had tickets to see them open up for Motely Crue back in 1987 in Roanoke Civic Center, but I was grounded for fucking up my friend's dead Mercedes, we stuck a banana in the tail-pipe, squeezed lotion all over it, and threw a burnt doll baby on it, I remember Chris calling me "such a prick" back in the 7th grade in band class, we were 2nd and 3rd chair inthe Sax section, that was quite fun too, we would be louder than everyone else and laugh our asses off when the conductor went the fuck off on us, she was also the wife of the Principle of Lylburn Downing Middle School, Mrs. Keen. She hated us, but I think she kinda liked us. Ah, stories about band.
Well, back on topic, I feel enlightened now, I'll do my research. I feel bad I missed his art while he was alive, oh well, such is life.

You guys have it out, but I'm gonna say that Beyond The Valley is one of the greatest, strangest movies I've ever seen.

when he's having that party in the beginning, and they're playing Strawberry Alarmclock. and he says "this is my happening and it FREAKS ME OUT!"
Russ Meyer understood excess. everything is so deliberatly excessive and over-the-top in his films. they're so fucking hilarious.
that Beneley scene in BEYOND THE VALLEY.. when she's having sex and keeps saying "a Bentley! in a Bentley!" and they keep cutting away to the car.
that is cinema gold.

It's sad news. I went to see a double bill (of course ) of Russ Meyers films while I was uni about 13 or 14 years ago. I think (although it's somewhat lost in the mists of time) that they were Supervixen and Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens.
What I do remember was that in UltraVixens there was a large woman whose face was diamond shaped, and so nauseated me I was retching while watching the film.

Softcore films have simulated sex. Softcore doesn't go any further than what you'd see on Cinemax at 2 AM. The words "softcore" and "porn" almost don't even go together.
Russ Meyer was a great director whose films are completely unique.
Recommended reading:
- The huge Russ Meyer interview in the Incredibly Strange Films book put out by RE/Search.
- Joe Bob Briggs' perfect summation of Russ Meyer on the occasion of the release of Meyer's three-volume, 1200+ page autobiography a few years ago. This article used to be on Joe Bob Briggs website, but I just looked for it and the link -- to it and other articles -- only leads to a blank page now. Maybe Joe Bob's planning to put the piece in a book or something. |
