After talking about zombie films, what do you people think of Mr John Carpenter? Isn't he the best film-director of this whole damn universe? Isn't he the only film-director who perfectly knows how to handle a camera?

i love "the thing" - that's damn cool, with kurt russell and the story pretty much influenced by h.p. lovecraft
also, the vampire movie is funny
i think he rocks, more than many others...

I'm a fellow fan, although I thought "Ghosts of Mars" was pretty horrible, and not in a good way, unfortunately. But "The Thing" is at the top of my list. I reckon it's his best work.
"In the Mouth of Madness", "Escape From New York", "Prince of Darkness", "Vampires", and "Big Trouble in Little China" are all great. And of course "Halloween" is a classic, although it's spawned such a heap of crappy sequels and spin-offs that I could hardly watch it now.
I haven't seen all his movies though, and I didn't like "They Live" that much. I think it's Roddy Piper who put me off. It was as if J.C. had chosen Dolph Lundgren to star in one of his movies.
(But, of course, he isn't "the only film director who perfectly knows how to handle a camera", provided such an individual exists. I'm not going to shower you with names, I'm not interested in that kind of discussion, especially as I posted to say that I agree with you!)

I think "Ghosts Of Mars" sucks too, but maybe that's the only one with Starman that's not great.

I've only seen 1 of those you list here (Escape From NY). I wouldn't consider him the greatest director ever (that title belongs to Brian De Palma, sorry), but I like his movies. The Thing was awesome, Fog was great too and Halloween is a classic.

Even "Mission to Mars", Denis? I thought this one stunk to the high heavens. But "Phantom of the Paradise", "The Untouchables", "Carrie", "Blow Out", "Carlito's Way", "Casualties of War", "Dressed to Kill"... all good viewing memories and sometimes more. I don't care for "Mission: Impossible" though.
Apparently De Palma's working on Ellroy's "Black Dahlia"? I really want to see that. That book is absolutely chilling. I have to read it again someday.

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is a highly underrated horror film.
i took an entire class in college that revolved around THEY LIVE. i'm a fan, but some of his stuff is god awful (like ESCAPE FROM LA)..
a friend of a friend is actually his personal assistant. he's supposed to be a cool guy i hear

If it makes you feel any better, I almost attributed The Howling (a Joe Dante film) to Brian De Palma in my previous post...

Yep. Actually I own less than 10 DVDs, and Mission To Mars is among them.
OK, I only bought it cause it was cheap, but still. I thought it was a pretty good movie, though not De Palma's best (which is Phantom Of The Paradise and happens to be the best movie ever made, but I've already said that a dozen times on this forum).

The one creepiest thing I remember from 'In the Mouth of Madness' was that kid on the bicycle that keeps passing by...and then he's eventually an old man with long white hair...

About three years ago, I was stoned (I think), channel surfing when I came across They Live. I happened to tune in right when the two central characters got into that 10 or 15 minute fight. I sat there in awe as the two men beat the hell out of each other for what seemed an eternity. Then, when they finally finished and the guy put the sunglasses on to see the aliens, my head exploded. I had no idea what the hell I was watching. I found out from asking around and ended up renting it a few months later.
My favorite Carpenter film that I have seen is The Thing, though I have not seen too many of his films. I thought the set up to Escape from New York was awesome, but once he actually got into New York City, I became disappointed with the film. It just never really reached the level it seemed capable of.

HALLOWEEN is genius. that first steadicam shot, from the point of view of the killer.. that was inspired filmmaking. i think his score for that film is also brilliant (which he did too)..

Im sad to say that, yes, I wasted my time on those films....I was even at the world premiere of Vampires, John Carpenter was there, yes, but I went to see James Woods.
...have you seen Ghosts Of Mars, Escape From LA.....those are inexcusable....no 'good' director would make films that bad even if they tried. |

Thing seen in a store today:
A cheap DVD (apparently a Belgian edition) of "Re-Animator".
The back cover reads:
"A film by John Carpenter
With Jerry Combs in d'herbert west..."
(It's actually a Stuart Gordon movie, and the actor who plays Herbert West is called Jeffrey Combs.)
Just thought it was funny. I didn't buy it of course. Even if "Re-Animator" was my favourite movie in the world, and this was the only way on Earth I could ever see it again, I still wouldn't touch that DVD with a ten-foot pole.

Ghosts sucks like I said before (but the production is formally still great), and if Escape is not a perfect movie, it's still a good one, and Vampires is just one of the 5 best movies ever made on the subject -with the Murnau, the Polanski, the Coppola...

| 'Halloween' and 'The Thing' are probably his best movies. Apparently, he wants to do a Thing sequel(the game followed up on events in the film, actually). I though 'Vampires' was crap. Never did see 'Ghosts Of Mars', but it looks dodgy. Actually, I've only seen ever some of 'Big Trouble'...but it looks a bit crap. 'They Live' was great fun. 'Prince Of Darkness' could have been a lot better. I can't remember 'Assault', but I think I remember liking it. Don't recall seing either 'Escape' movies. |

how could we all forget about DARKSTAR, his first and surely one of his best movies ? for those who don't know: it's about a spaceship and its crew with the task to eliminate planets which are on an unstable orbit.
it's one of the most weirdest movie's i've seen - but without the purpose to be weird. not that is a crap, it's just so out of everything - the idea, the dialogues, the scenes, the actors, the "special" effects. go out on the net and find out about, it's worth it.
i dig the final scene, after the spaceship has exploded and the commander surfs away on a broken part of the ship (because "surfin' is the thing i'm missing out here !"). there is a pretty cool song to this scene, has anybody an idea what song it is ?

I don't think John Carpenter is anything really special, although I am considering buying a cheap DVD of Assault on Precinct 13.
Vampires was terrible.

Oh, I've seen it already. I don't remember a hell of a lot about it, but I know that I like movies where people are trapped and fighting off people trying to get in. Have any of you seen "Straw Dogs"? The ending to that is intense.
