just walked back in the door after seeing an incredible pixies show at the mesa ampitheater.
first off... you couldn't have asked for a more beautiful night. outdoor under the stars... generally at this time of the year in the valley it's still in the hundreds in the day and the nineties at night. but tonight it had to have been upper seventies, nice and dry after our bout with the remnants of tropical storm javier.
the distillers were pretty damn good. kind of like if hole was actually a good rock band. no, better than that, really. they tore it up nicely.
but that's not what we're here to talk about, is it? nope, let's talk about the first proper (non-fest) show of the pixies north american tour. they played much much tighter than at coachella, looked much much less nervous, and look genuinely surprised and touched by the reception given them by around 3000 or so arizonans singing every word to every song and showering the stage with deafening applause between songs.
as for me personally, this show was fairly stunning. i had seen them in '89 and then again at coachella, and those were good... but this was great. i was about 3 feet from the barricade right in front of kim and got her to smile at me a couple of times as i probably looked goofy as hell pogo-ing and beaming like a little kid on christmas morning.
first time ever that i've seen them all smiling at each other and having such a good time on stage. those of you with tickets to upcoming shows have really got something to look forward to.
what a freakin' great evening.
one hour and thirty minutes... there was a curfew on the venue so instead of going backstage before coming back for the encore of in heaven/where is my mind, they just stood around on stage soaking in the applause then picked up their instruments and played. i was having too much fun to write a proper setlist down, but these were the songs played:
in heaven
caribou
vamos
isla de encanta
ed is dead
the holiday song
nimrod's son
something against you
broken face
gigantic
river euphrates
where is my mind
cactus
debaser
tame
i bleed
here comes your man
dead
monkey gone to heaven
mr. grieves
crackity jones
number 13 baby
hey
gouge away
velouria
is she weird
planet of sound
u-mass
subbacultcha
winterlong

it wasn't anything about anything

With the elaborate synchro-strage lighting, smoke machine, and sets (fake trees)it was real different than when I've seen them in the past. But they played HARD and, as chango pointed out, tight. Except during Nimrod's Son when Frank messed up, thinking they were changing to the slowed-down version midway through the song and stopped to apologize to Joe, and saying, "You can have the top bunk tonight," they were perfect. They played for ninety minutes and ran through thirty songs. It was a great night.

they opened with 'is she weird'. i'm sure they have done that before, but i don't remember ever reading past setlists where they opened with that. they followed that up with 'subbacultcha' and then 'tame'. excellent show.
