The two pale boys version of monkey. that song was awful. i understand that frank didnt really have anything to do with it and that it was an experiment. but man its bad.
no soul in it whatsoever. whoa. but i am sure honeycomb and the b-sides catholics albums will be good so i am not too upset. |

I don't think the problem is that Someone doesn't like that version of "Monkey" (I don't really care for it either, for what it's worth), but that he (she?) started a new thread just to say that.

I dunno, seems just as valid as starting a thread about how someone really likes a song.
Nah, screw diplomacy - let's burn 'em! grrr!
Wait, I haven't listened to it yet. |

Yes, the only opinions allowed on this board are those spoken with a tongue implanted firmly up Frank's ass. |

me thinks Frank can handle some criticism, he was in one of the most underappreciated bands of all time. Been reading a thread bout someone not wanting FBF released coz it dont meet their approval. f**k! i feel like the only one who hasnt heard a note from it yet. cant wait to get hold and listen for myself, where i'll decide if its good or not. but your opinions for and against are welcomed til that date. |

That's true, and I don't really have a problem with this thread. It's just that there are already three or four threads slagging off Frank Black Francis.

As far as I'm concerned with this FrankBlackFrancis album, who cares? Everyone here is going to buy it, which entitles everyone to their opinion. But good Lord! It's like a year ago when everyone was ranting and boo-hooing about the Pixies reunion. A good majority was downright against it. Now there's more trading/buying Pixies concert tickets on this site than any other forum here! The guy OWNS his songs. If he wants to release them, it's his decision. It's his band. If he wants to play, it's his gig. Basically, no one is ever going to be truly happy with every aspect of an artists wares, so accept it and quit reading so deep into it. Buy it and put it on the shelf as an oddity in your collection. I haven't heard it yet, and there is a 50/50 chance I will or will not like it. If so, cool! If I don't like it, oh well! I'm not too crazy about that Martini's album, but I sure as heck am not going to spend hours on-line pining and wishing through meaningless critizism HOW it should be different or WHY it shouldn't have been released. Ugh.

well said but i also think its valid enough saying how you dont like a song...i duno...pixies fans will be pixies fan and theyll talk, complain, praise and slag off (not so often) anything coming from their hero, mr.black
if your trying to get pecamistic post of the forum, then i dont see it hapening but i dont really mind them..it helps me when i buy a new album to know the positives and negatives of it so im prepared... but that does not mean that im going to think exactly the same or copy the opinion on it... |

I'd like to know who here is spending "hours on-line pining and wishing through meaningless criticism". Christ, you spend a minute or two expressing your opinion and you're done with it. Big deal. |

To be honest RE most pixies things that have happened recently and may happen in future - reunion, tour, FBF, new songs, new album... well if we had heard about them a couple of years ago we might have questioned how credible the artist would be after it happened... but when you get news of each individual thing drip fed - bit by bit, rumour by rumour, then by the time it becomes a reality the fans have accepted and it doesn't seem a big deal. I have to say the biggest integrity thing I have probs with is the re-recording of songs that are already the firm foundation of a bands repertoire.. But of course I’ll buy it because pixies/frank is the only music I have ever been truly fanatical about.. But I can see how people might be a bit sceptical about it – I’m sure many of us have dismissed similar type projects by decent bands that we mightn’t have been such big fans of, but still a fans, in other words, easier to critise because we have no loyaly to them but sill think they are good. |

charlesthompson I very much agree. It's fine to criticize, or even lambast something. That's why I originally said, if you've paid money for it, you're entitled to your opinion. But more oft than not, the threads on this site are tending to lean a bit towards deconstructded and shallow criticism. I for one, as stated earlier, haven't heard FBF. But when I do, and if I don't care for it, will certainly consider what has made him rework his songs, and try to gain a microcosmic perspective on his choices. I'm not going to hold a Pixie-album burning bonfire. As for spending hours online pining (and this is in response NOT to you charlesthompson, because your post is 3 dimensional), all one has to do is look at the posts and read the time, the date, and the amounts of posts and the subject matter itself to see the pining, and wishing through meaningless criticism. I just would like to see people a bit more focused in their analysis. A decision off-the-cuff tends to hold no merit in the long run. To not like something is fine...but you better be ready to explain why in terms that are tangible. And by the same token, we can only realize what is good by understanding the structure of what is bad. This too does not reflect my view of ALL Frankblack.net members...just a recent percentage. Nevertheless, it worries me because there are so many intelligent people here! I'd like this to keep on being a sharp I.Q. bunch of folk!

Some people on this forum are so hung up on when people joined up, how long they've been a fan of pixies/fb, how many times they posted and in what sections, utterly irrelevant! |

Hey Someone,
If you really don't like the album you can send it me. I cannot afford to buy it but I will gladly accept it as a donation. I will then give you my honest opinion.

First off, if he doesn't like the song, he has the right to make that statement without getting flamed.
Secondly, doesn't anyone remember the interview where Frank said he came into the studio, sang his parts to the songs, and basically said "See ya". The Pale Boys did ALL of the music, Frank had nothing to do with it whatsoever!!!
Frank is simply releasing it to complement the Gary Smith demos to give people more for there money. Casual fans would be ripped off by hearing boombox demos, whereas we would salivate over it.
I've had the Pale Boys disc for quite some time, and to be honest, I listened to it once and never again. I don't particularly care for any of it. But i'm still buying FBF for the demos and the demos alone. Because to me, that's the only TRUE Frank Black material on the album.

I think allot of these type demos and alternate versions albums are as spunXtain says, you listen it to it once and never or rarely again.. I make the distinction as pleasure music or non-pleasure music - for instance we might all listen to FBF to see what its like etc etc, but I would never listen to it as pleasure music if you know what I mean, an album of songs that took a year to create (give or take, exceptions allowed) like most pixies albums and created when the band were a fully functioning band - now that’s the pleasure music, the true originals that can never be copied. stuff like the FBF record is curiosity satisfied, listen once stuff in my opinion. As I said before the reworking of already huge pixies album material is the thing I have biggest problem with, I really don't think they should have been touched. If it was any other artist I would have totally dismissed it and would of been in the firm opinion that the songs had been cheapened. But when your huge fan you sometimes don't like to admit criticism on anything the artist does... overall I would have much preferred if they had of just released the demo stuff on their own at a really affordable price! Also in general I think, and I remember thinking it when BW did beach boy songs on solo records, that if the songs were belonging to a band then the guy that wrote them should never take ownership of them in a solo capacity, yes yes I know he wrote them, but the song belong with the band and not solo artist that emerged, and any reworking should be done with the full band… |

Wow. you guys are worked up about this. a couple people asked for a more complete criticism.
The music was slowed down. imagine listening to a pixies 45 playing at 33 rpm while on lots of cough syrup. It was slightly unique but not enough to be interesting. no emotion in franks voice. which is a great thing about frank. he can sing about aliens or historical events or going to the liquor store to cash your paycheck and make it sound really emtional and extremely important. on a side note i love the topics he chooses to sing about.
musically, the song was altered but nothing was really added. it was just distorted.
well, i guess thats about all i can give ya.
a lot of people are gettin on my case who have never heard the song. maybe you should go take a listen first. you'll see. it lacks frank's touch. it is very evident that he didn't put it together.
also i understand its an experiment and i guess its cool that he tried it. i am just saying it aint good. no big deal though. its not even really his music. its really the two pale boys. i am more intersted in the early pixie recording disc. |
