It sounds mathematically impossible, but last week, I worked for 106 hours.
Next week, it will probably be the same story.
I don't see my friends anymore, I don't even think about getting myself a girlfriend again.
It's Friday evening and I won't be going out because I'm too tired.
I am 24 and I am thinking about this masochist choice of life I made last year.
I have some pictures of myself on my desk where I look very happy and healthy and I don't recognize myself anymore.
It's really insane.

I have asked myself that question many times. Monsieur, you are not alone. I have gone for multiple months at a time working that kind of schedule (starting at age 21), and about 60% of the time it has resulted in significant career advancement - the other times I just burn out and hit the wall. It takes a while (especially when you are in a fairly new job...say less than three years) to get your rhythm down, and become familiar enough with your market and the related red tape to slice through that stuff so you're not there til midnight wrestling with it.
I have the feeling that my working hours are about to increase again (already starting to), but this time I hope to see that I can maintain an even pace instead of the feast or famine cycle that seems all too frequent in the modern business world. I may report from the field if this happens, if I can remember the location of this thread, or my own name.
To answer your question, Carolynanna - I have found that it is all for money, industry credibility, and the dream of retiring before you are 40 so you can do whatever your heart desires and maintain a comfortable lifestyle. The downside risk is that you don't have the luck you hope, or that merit does not get you there. Then it was a waste. But by that logic, so is working a crap job until you are 80 at less of a burn rate. I have often thought about trying to find something I truly love and doing that for 35 hours a week or less, just to pay minimal bills. But then how will we do everything we want to?
I don't regret all the spent midnight oil, as I am very happy with my life today and any number of changes could have altered that path. I feel a lot older than I am because of it, though - so just be careful and try to pace yourself. Balance is everything. Start a band, go play in a fountain, and don't let the bastards get you down. It really is self inflicted, so it can be alleviated as easily.

just kidding. i can relate. my hours are generally insane too. this week has mellowed out a bit, but it's not uncommon for me to work 70 80 hours a week.. sometimes more. but i get breaks between projects, which sort of balances things out. plus i like my job..
but there are times when i wonder what it would be like to have a normal job with normal hours and stuff.. i can never make plans during the week because i never know when i'm getting off work on a day to day (hour by hour) basis.

It is not really temporary, during the first three years we all work about 90 hours a week, and every weekend.
I guess that I agree with Mr Eris, money is one of the main motivations. The job is very interesting too, but many other things are interesting. I just have so many projects in my life, and it requires money to get there. Due to certain circumstances, I won't get any money from my parents, so I need to earn it by myself. At least I have the feeling that I am going somewhere (though I don't know precisely where).

And quite right too that you don't get money from your parents. I still think you should cut down on your hours though, but it's your choice so I guess there is not a lot that the rest of us can say on this one.

That feast or famine thing sucks, I'me either working a 90hr week, or panicky and worrying that I'm only working a twenty hour one, and nervously awaiting the next onslaught (or worse, a trip to the unemploymeny office) but then I guess thats the trade off for running your own business. I thank my lucky stars that I'm not answerable to "The Man". Just remember nobody ever said on their death bed "I wish I spent more time at the office".
The thing I alway ask my missus, also a compulsive worrier/workaholic is "Will anyone die if you dont do your job?" If the answer "No" then go home and have a beer...

I came up through the comparatively creative educational route, and never imagined I'd end up in a nice, relaxed 9-5 office job. Yet that's exactly the situation I'm in, and I love it. I love the security of a proper job, the ease of planning your life round, the guaranteed income. I'm also dead happy in the office cos everybody's cool and the job is fine, and I can do a bit of creative stuff in my spare time.
So its not neccessarily a depressing drudge. If you can find a decent job then its fine. I'm OK for money and everything.
I'm not normally very good for advice at this sort of thing, but I'd agree with general sentiment here - surely its not worth it. Money's not the 'be all and end all of everything', and you should take your chance to have fun while you're young.

I could never work the insane hours some people here do. I mean, if you're working that much, when do you get a chance to spend all the money you make? On the other hand, I certainly wouldn't mind working more hours than the part-time ones I do now. Or getting paid a lot more than I do. Either way would work.

man, 106 hours.
some of the guys i work with do 80-90 hours weeks week in week out, and they only thing that keeps them going is the money.
i personally couldn't do that just for the sake of working, but doing something you love makes it a totally different ballgame.
in a few months time, i'm moving a new country to start a job working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and i can't wait cause it's doing something i love, and something that i trained for 7 years to do. at presnt i work for 40 hours doing something i don't love and i hate every minute of it.
the only other time i worked those kinda hours was working on a dairy farm when i was younger, and it was the most rewarding experience i have ever had....working 14 hour days, i was totally at piece with myself.
so i can understand where you guys are coming from, and while i don't have any advice to give, it's something to know you ain't alone....

I am spending the rest of today making miniscule model representations of everything in my house. Getting the track credits done on plastociene CDs at 1/30 scale is a bitch, but at least I'll be able to listen to obscure limited edition singles in the afterlife.
