Hi,

I know a few of you live in Columbus, OH. I was wondering what is it like? What are some of the things to do? What is the music scene like? If you are married, is there anything else to do other than sit at home on the weekend and rent videos? Are there any cool hiking/biking trails? What is the atmosphere like? Is it bible belt? Is it conservative? Are there any artistic/free spirit types? Are there any good yoga studios/instructors?

I know you probabably won't be able to answer all of these but anything you can do to honestly tell me the atmosphere there would be great.

My husband needs to tell a company if I want to live there today or tomorrow. I am just scared it will be like where I grew up in Indiana... small, racist, redneck and nothing to do. Not to mention the sniper. :(

Thanks... anything would be so helpful!! You rock!

Daisy -I'll log into MSN chat in a few minutes -there's a lot to cover in a short amount of time. Where do you live now, if I may ask? Suffice it to say Columbus proper does not resemble Indiana in the least. You're always going to have the stuff you mentioned in the outskirts of any town though, as far as I've seen.

Please feel free to chat me soon -or email me through my profile. Chatting would be faster though. I completely understand your dilemna - we went through that 2 years ago, moving from Chicago for a relocation (AHHHH!). But don't panic, I will tell you everything I know, and depending on what you are leaving, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Cool... thank you so much. I was in Indiana for most of my life ... right now we are in Minneapolis and I like it so much that I am afraid to move.

I will now go to your profile to see if we can chat :)

Columbus is a little better than Cleveland.

Cleveland fucking sucks.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

Did you used to live in Columbus, Obfuscate?

I like Columbus pretty well. What we miss about living in downtown Chicago is almost made up for in the ability to live in the country and be 20 minutes from tons of music, galleries, museums, parks, cultural events, and great restaurants. The weekend of Sept. 25th we're going to the all-weekend Italian street painting festival http://shortnorth.org/via_colori/index.html , right after seeing Ghost at the Wexner Center for the Arts. Should be a great time. http://www.wexarts.org/index.php?flash=yes

Daisy, I haven't seen you on MSN, but if you're still interested, I'll be around on there off and on tonight.

And yeah, noexx, Little Brothers is awesome! http://www.littlebrothers.com/

Daisy, Ithink SpudBoy is about to post, so at the risk of being redundant to what he has to say, here are a few sites to start digging through, if you like.

Arts, music, entertainment, events, etc., the usual suspects:

As apl4eris mentioned, we moved here about 2.5 years ago with a relocation. It is hard moving anywhere and not knowing where to go, what to do, which area to move in to, etc and our initial impression of Columbus honestly scared the hell out of us. As city dwellers, we naturally went straight downtown to see what was going on on a Saturday, and the business district and adjacent neighborhoods were basically a deserted ghetto. Once we did some more exploring we were a lot more comfortable with the idea. Now we are really starting to feel some sense of home here, and we keep uncovering new interesting stuff going on. Apl posted some good links above.

There are tons of hiking/biking trails, fishing and boating lakes, etc. here, and some good live music clubs (saw FB&TC at little brothers! coulda spit on the whole band from where we were standing!) and record stores. We tend to avoid the dance clubs and university bars as the Ohio State sports mindset can get old (however if college sports is your thing, this place is shangri-la). We mostly hang around the house, but there are places to go when we get antsy.

Check this out:

http://houseandhome.msn.com/pickaplace/comparecities.aspx

Looks like twice the people at half the density. You can buy a reasonable house on reasonable land in or out of the city (and prices are going up, not down), and the commute times aren't bad yet. One caveat there: this place is growing fast. I expect the infrastructure to start to really drag in about 3-5 years at the current rate unless they sink some cash into it.

We live in the relative country and still get broadband over cable. Grocery stores are good, but the one Wild Oats (upscale organic/foofoo store) is a bit of a hike for us.

I don't know many companies here doing relocation, so it might be my workplace that is making this offer - chat apl4eris or email me and I am happy to talk shop if this is the case, as I know that is as important as the city you are going to if not moreso.

If you do decide to take it, we'll most likely be around, unless my gracious employer whips us across the ocean or something.

I get the sense that anywhere you happen to be might fit that description, Ebb. At times I admire your inexhaustable well of cynicism. I dance the funky chicken in the supermarket. Nowhere is dull when you dance the funky chicken.

indiana is stinky or lame except for Bloomington. Terre Haute is the armpit and Gary is the smelly behind.

do you really like ann arbor???
