This hit the wires at about 1 AM Sunday morning. If you haven't heard about it, here is a link to the yahoo news story: "Powell Says N. Korea Blast Not Nuclear"
From the comments on slashdot "Are there any online seismometers that show this blast. A nuclear explosion would show one big spike, but large ordnance would show a series of smaller spikes."
" Yes.....Look at the data marked 3 days ago and compare it to the others. There is a spike." http://www.physics.hmc.edu/research/geo/seismo.html#days [direct link] There is a time delay to pick this up on the California seismometers, so below is a comment from slashdot with a link to a closer reading:
http://www.fnet.bosai.go.jp/freesia/waveform/prev.html Set for "Selected Window" IZH 1day plot Date: 2004/09/10 (UT) Something bighappened at 2 AM, Same as the HMC plot, but this one is a hell of alot bigger." |

Japan is saying that spike is from an earthquake. There are still questions as to what time the explosion occurred. All the news sources say something different, or are just completely ambiguous, like Reuters, which says that it happened "some time between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning".
Reading the slashdot comments in this case has been very interesting. |

Yeah, read about that last night minutes after it was posted on /.
Pretty scary...i'm surprised no one has confirmed any spikes in radiation...that'd be a pretty solid way to confirm if it was a nuke.

LOL! They're a crazy bunch!

N Korea says it blew up mountain
South Korean media has been full of speculation about the blast North Korea has given its first explanation for a huge blast last week which prompted speculation it had carried out a nuclear test. The country's foreign minister, Paek Nam-sun, said the blast was in fact the deliberate demolition of a mountain as part of a huge, hydro-electric project.
His remarks came in response to a call for information by the visiting UK Foreign Office minister, Bill Rammell.
North Korea had said nothing about the incident until now.
After meeting with Mr Paek, Mr Rammell said North Korea had agreed to his request that a British diplomat be allowed to visit the scene of the blast, near the country's northern border.
Mr Rammell welcomed the fact that North Korea had provided an explanation for the blast and agreed to the request.
"Having asked the vice foreign minister this morning for our ambassador and other ambassadors to be allowed to visit the scene of the explosion I am very pleased the North Koreans have agreed to the request," Mr Rammell said.
'Peculiar cloud'
The United States and South Korea had already played down suggestions that the explosion, near Yongjo-ri in Yanggang Province, was caused by a nuclear device.
"There was no indication that was a nuclear event of any kind. Exactly what it was, we're not sure," US Secretary of State Colin Powell told ABC television on Sunday.
The blast is said to have happened on Thursday as the Stalinist state celebrated its National Day.
It created what officials in Seoul say was a peculiar-shaped cloud.
The incident and the fears it has provoked around the world are another illustration of the enormous tension between the regime and the international community, says the BBC's diplomatic correspondent James Robbins, in Pyongyang.
North Korea is under international pressure to end all nuclear programmes and disarm.
But so far it has offered only limited concessions during "six-party" international talks involving both Koreas, the US, China, Russia and Japan.
It has not yet committed to attend a fourth round of the talks, which the Chinese, as hosts, wanted to start before the end of this month.
And it's hard to be a human being, and it's harder as anything else, and I'm lonesome when you're around, and I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself, and I miss you when you're around. |

no it fucking wouldn't
Bill Hicks drank, smoked and took drugs and all round abused his body, but he got through it, quit drinking, quit smoking quit the drugs then got pancreatic cancer totally unrelated to ANY OF THE ABOVE. Not so fucking hilarious and mostly heartbreaking.
