the albums poll got me thinking of some of my favorite songs. these aren't necessarily on my top 5 favorite albums and some aren't even from my top 10 favorite musicians, but i can definitely say they are among my very favorite songs.
simon and garfunkel- "at the zoo"-- everything about this song is perfect: the melody, the production, the lyrics. I LOVE IT.
frank black and the catholics- "southbound bevy"-- again, everything is perfect: frank's voice, the production, the lyrics, the melody. amazing song from my favorite artist.
the beatles- "michelle"-- one of the reasons why Rubber Soul is one of my favorite albums.
weezer- "you gave your love to me softly"-- one of my former favorite bands (i kind of grew out of them, but they still have a special place in my heart). this song is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. flawless.
bob dylan- "girl from the north country"-- this is the most beautiful song ever written. the Nashville Skyline version with johnny cash is really good, but i prefer the Freewheelin version. this song moves me almost to tears EVERY time i hear it.
it's amazing that it was easier for me to do this list than the albums list.

"Southbound Bevy" might be my favorite Frank song, too.
I'll consider my Top 5 and maybe I'll have a list later. |

my number one all time favourite song is nobody loves you when you're down and out by John Lennon, it has been for over 15 years and not a month goes by when I don't have to hear it.
the rest are in no particular order but they are
2. He stopped loving her today - George Jones
3. One man guy - rufus wainwrights version
4. Evetythings falling apart - hefner
5. By the time I get to phoenix - Glen Campbell
the number 5 spot could have been the man in blacks hurt/jackson or sunday morning coming down by Kris or wichita line man, as it goes it is by the time I get to phoenix, none better than that thinking about it.

Picking just five songs is impossible, at least I'm certain that Beach Boys' God Only Knows will always be in my top 5.

well... it's really hard to answer that, but apart from the Pixies and Frank songs I would probably chose a Joy Division song, one from Nirvana, one from Bowie, another from Sonic Youth and maybe another one by Radiohead or PJ Harvey, but at the moment, my 5 favourite songs are:
Elephant Woman - Blonde Redhead Moonlight Mile - The Rolling Stones Sand - Lee Hazlewood And Nancy Sinatra Ribbons Of You - Shannon Wright Starless - King Crimson

"Velouria" would probably go somewhere in my Top Five. Perhaps "It's Not My Birthday," by They Might Be Giants, as well.

I can only think of two at this very moment. "Caribou" by the Pixies, and "The Storm" by Tanya Donelly. There's a few maybe's: "Laser Beam" by Low, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, "Pictures Of You" by The Cure, and the odd blast from the past like "Beautiful Day" by Three Colours Red or "Die Laughing" by Therapy.
So, I finally got my X-Wing |

When I was much younger (Queen had only gone out of style twice) I came up with the five greatest songs of all time.
I suppose they all HAD to be epics.
1. Stairway to Heaven (which had yet to go out of style) 2. Sultans of Swing 3. London Calling 4. Black Angel (Cult) 5. ?Paint It Black?/?Sympathy for the Devil?
I was very sure about this at the time, but now I can't recall the order or exactly what was on that list.
Anyhow, although I'm less sure these days I am sure that Black Angel isn't even my favourite song on Love.
I also know that Jimmy Webb's song Do What You Gotta Do as performed by Roberta Flack consistently drives me to tears. The only other song I can think of that gets me bawling is No Woman, No Cry (The live version, Bob Marley and the Wailers).
I've had Fields of Marigold and Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons rolling in my head for months, but right now what I really want to hear is Morally Bankrupt, or Plastic Liver. |

1. Inspiration - Lone Justice - Maria McKee is my favourite female vocalist, and on this song the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time. Been my favourite track for over a decade
2. Forbidden Colours - Sylvian & Sakamoto - Just a sublime song. Tragic and lovelorn and desolate. Again, seems like I've loved it forever
3. Letter to Memphis - Pixies - The intro to this gives me shivers, and the rest doesn't disappoint
4. Time is the Diamond - Low - Trust was my first Low album, which I bought on the strength of a review from somewhere. Even then took a bit of time to get into, but it's my favourite album to listen to when I'm a bit hacked off with the world and drowning my sorrows. Sorry for the pun, but this song is a gem
5. Bluetonic - Bluetones - It makes me smile. It makes me laugh. It makes me want to dance. Tbh, this could have been ant one of about 10 songs, but this makes me the happiest, and I never tire of hearing it. |

01. The Beach Boys "Surf's Up" 02. Frank Black "Parry The Wind High, Low" 03. Guided By Voices "Acorns And Orioles" 04. Cheap Trick "The Ballad of TV Violence" 05. Barry Black "Derelict Vultures"
Only the last minute and forty-eight seconds of "Derelict Vultures" are particularly amazing, though. The first 3 minutes and 7 seconds are less than amazing. |
