I'm definitely not wanting to look a gift-horse in the mouth here---hey, I'd see the Pixies if they were playing nothing but different versions of Vamos for two hours straight---but has there been any indication that the setlists might change slightly? I know that to some extent that this was supposed to be a kind of "greatest hits" tour, but considering that the Pixies had no greatest hits, I thought they might---hopefully!---dust off some old overlooked gems, like Letter to Memphis, Motorway to Roswell (they dedicated this one to me in concert in 1991---at 15, I went nuts!), The Happening, Dig For Fire, etc. And I remember several articles mentioning that Bam Thwok would be played on tour, but so far no luck, it seems.
I'm seeing them five times in October, and I sure hope a few surprises are thrown in here and there. Again, I'll be happy as hell just to see the Pixies for the first time since 1991---a Pixies veteran here---but a *little* variation would be nice too. |

| Makes me wonder whether the band might have committed, perhaps contractually, to a definite set of possible songs for the duration of this tour. Otherwise I would think they would have added some along the way. Sure seems like it would be great fun for all concerned. |

i have a theory about why they play the old ones:
i think it might be cause these were the songs when the band as a whole had more input - especially kim.
for the later records it was all frank, frank, frank - with the others having lesser roles in the singing, decision making etc.
i think that they wanted to keep away from those tunes which had not been so communal.
understand?

So are you saying in terms of contracts with labels??? I am clueless in this area! E.g. they can only play 4ad songs??? |

| I'd love to hear more from Bossanova or Trompe though. I'm guessing that Charles doesn't consider some of those songs good enough. Or they're too hard to recreate onstage without a keyboard player. |

Actually I meant a contract, perhaps informal, among themselves. For example, I imagine Frank made his participation contingent upon certain things, such as professionalism, or maybe Kim agreed to avoid substances if there were no alcohol on the tour period. Don't know that those are real at all but they must have laid out some ground rules. I agree that they may be limiting the show mostly to pre-Bossanova stuff to avoid the material generated after band started working less as a whole. Anyway, no, I wasn't thinking in terms of contracts with labels. |

I think it might mainly have to do with the later songs bringing back memories of tension and what not...like benji said.
I find it unbelievable that they would just completely ignore gems like The Sad Punk, Rock Music, Motorway to Roswell, The Happening, Letter to Memphis, Ana, Trompe Le Monde...
I don't mean to sound like a dick, but considering the utter encomium that the Pixies have been granted by their fans during this tour, you'd think that other reasons would pale in the wake of people's desire to hear more Bossa and Trompe material. I guess not though.
Also, maybe Frank doesn't want to shred his vocal chords by busting out Rock Music as an opener every night...but if it was up to me, I'd be like "Shred em away, Chuck! Play that fucking shit!" |

| Yep there was an interview somewhere that they were going to vary them up a bit with a pool of 40 songs, it would make sense to do that so the next lot of disclives from the forthcoming tour would have varied setlists & hence be a lot more collectable. |

| I think the songs Kim liked are key to the setlist. I have an interview at home with the breeders (in a noisy bar in Dublin) where the interviewer asks her about Black's new album (his debut) and she say that if Charles was still making music like 'come on pilgrim', that was my favourite album she says, then she would listen to more of his stuff... she goes on to say she hated TLM, and then asks the rest of the breeders what they thought of TLM and they all say that they liked side one (obviously no CD player in the tour bus!!), much to her displeasure. I maybe should see about getting that interview digitalised, it’s on audio cassette and very bad quality but very revealing.... its rare too I’d say, I recorded it off a now disbanded pirate called 'Alice’s Restaurant’. which was basically a few guys broadcasting from a garden shed during the 90’s in Dublin |

well i hope they start practicing some more "later" tunes, or else hardcore fans arent gonna keep coming again and again to see the same setlist... ive seen the pixies 10 times so far this year and the 40 song rotation has NOT changed since the 4th warm up show in Saskatoon.....
Frank, pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase give us more TLM and Bossanova, its what the fans want...
maybe we could organize something where at every show fans hold up signs for Bossanova and Trompe and if it was consistent enough they might start rehearsing more songs....i dont want to annoy the band, but frank is quoted saying they are playing what they think "the audience wants to hear" , so maybe we just have to let him know :) |

that is a far shot, but a coordinated effort like that could very well work.
Anyway, they're coming to DC for two nights. I am going to both nights (provided that I can get tickets), but I would feel far more excited about doing so if I knew they would vary up the set for each night quite drastically. I would be FAR more excited if I could expect to hear more Bossa and Trompe. I guess we'll see... |

well we need to basicly just let the band know whats up...
we want more trompe and bossanova!!!!
if at each show, a couple people held up signs asking for these albums, if it was consistent enough theyd have to cave in eventually.... as of now the only shows left in the year im personally going to is NYC.... but when i held up signs for "dig for fire" on multiple nights of the warm up tour, the band definitely noticed....
i listen to some early 90's shows i have and hear all the tracks they are NOT playing in 2004 and im fiending....
if you want change you have to be pro-active....
we got this message board to coordinate an effort, if anything it could make fall tour more exciting :)
imagine if the same signs got passed show to show by the fans, the band would see them everynite and who knows!!! if anything it would be an amusing tangent to the tour....but really how hard would it be for them to rehearse "all over the world" or "letter to memphis" and start dropping da bombs!!!
am i crazy?? |

Yeah, I am on the same page as all of you guys... more songs, and more variety would be cool. Definitely more stuff from Bossanova and TLM. But I would also like to hear other stuff like Sliver and Tony's Theme. Shoot... add Bam Thwok and It Ain't that Pretty at All to the Mix too!
Really there's not a Pixies song/cover I don't like. I must admit I do like that they stuck to the old school stuff because those are the albums I have the biggest emotional connection to...but the Boss & TLM have grown on me in the last year.
My goal is to hear at least each song live at least once before I die. But I gotta say I appreciate every song I hear live whether I've heard it before too :)
In my dreams... they would go through COP-TLM in by song in the two nights I get to see them.
I guess another theory that I saw someone else post months ago... sorry I don't remember who you were :) but there was speculation that maybe that the band wanted to stick to COP-Doolittle because those albums were more popular than Boss & TLM. Maybe the band just needs to know the fans are also crazy for Boss & TLM.
Anyway...as far as the signs go... Marbleslinger... I hear you with the signs because we want to let the band know we want to hear all of their stuff. I am just wondering if the band could see the signs from the stage... with all the lights and everything do you think they will be able to see more than just the outline of the signs??? I don't know... can we start a unheard song request list here, on Pixiesmusic and Bailey's Walk... it would just include fans posting song names... and hopefully the band will either hear or come across those threads...??? Just an idea.
It makes sense from a business standpoint because it will sell more Disc Lives....I just want the band to be happy and if causes tension.. or bad karma I also want them to do stuff they like. :)

I agree 100%. I have seen the Pixies twice so far this year, with three more shows in November. I would LOVE to see at least a few more songs from TROMPE and BOSSANOVA. I think it was in the SPIN interview where Charles said "The fans are not coming out to hear our strangest B-Side" or something like that. I agree, it would not please the masses to play "Santo" or anything.
However, at least play ALLISON!!

we could have a section on the front page of this website with a list of all the songs we, "the audience" wants to hear....or something....i dunno...i just want to hear "all over the world".....

Definately... Marbleslinger, I think it is so awesome you're rallying the fans like this. To answer your question, I am not really sure about the best way to contact the band. I know the Pixies Manager Jo reads the site (you can see the thread that some one else started) ... you could also try emailing them through 4ad. But I am sure that other people have better ways. I don't want to rule out your sign idea, too... I just don't know enough to know if the band can read the signs from the stage. :) |

Ken Goes has been the Pixies/Frank's manager since Come on Pilgrim.
I doubt it'll happen though, Frank seems pretty convinced that the fans aren't very big fans of the last two (based on recent interviews), and of course fans from his own website are going to want those songs, I mean, we love everything. It is true that the last two albums have gained quite a bit in stature since they were first released. Most people I know like them just as much as the first three. However, I don't think think they're as fun to play live, if you listen to Pixies live shows from around 92, even with inner tensions, the songs just don't work as excellently in a concert setting. They were mostly created in the studio.
Keep in mind this is coming from someone who would love to hear most as well, but most of the songs just don't have that Pixies 'bounce' that seems to characterize the tunes they've chosen to play. |

| listening to 91 and 92 bootlegs is making me really want to hear those later songs, i think they translated just fine, all over the world and letter to memphis sound stellar live, better with eric drew feldman on keys, but rather well without IMHO...oh well, dare to dream. |

Very true Itchload. Thanks for fliling me in. Never really thought of it that way...very good thoughts. Actually, if you look at it from a preformance standpoint, I just want the band to have fun when they're playing live. So call me flip flop-- but in that case I think it is better to stick with what makes the band happy.
I am going to try to live in the moment and enjoy what I never thought I would see! |
