just got back from the pixies show. wow, 4th time seeing them this year. that's 4 times more than i ever thought i'd see them, but still ninety-six times too few.
i really enjoyed the venue. some people rag on the sound quality at the Plaza of Nations, but i thought it was great tonight. the band did one encore - debaser and tame, i think it was - after doing the not-leaving-the-stage thing. the setlist was pretty standard. here's the songs in random order:
Bone Machine Gigantic Vamos Gouge Away Here Comes Your Man Monkey Gone to Heaven Nimrod’s Son Where is my Mind Broken Face Caribou Hey Velouria Wave of Mutilation Cactus In Heaven Isla de Encanta No. 13 Baby Something Against You U-Mass I Bleed Crackity Jones (? i forget) Dead River Euphrates Ed Is Dead Mr. Grieves Debaser Tame
i really enjoyed seeing them open with bone machine. my personal pixies fantasy. wow, kim's hair was all short and dave's head was pretty much shaved. the band seemed pretty happy. not talky, as usual (all that talkiness in the warm-up tour is still a surprise to me). but a great show. they did seem more polished to me than they did on their first swing through vancouver.
tried to loiter for an autograph after, but they waved to me from the bus. that was good enough. |

I'd say Paris, 7th of June. Did they do it before? |

the Bad Plus were awesome, especially their very unique cover of "velouria"!!!!
i had a great time at this show, i though it was better than the nite before in seattle, but i still enojoyed the warm up shows more.... one thing that is really getting to me is that it really seems that the band forgot about bossanova and trompe le monde (minus a few tracks of course)... i mean, arent they going to get tired of playing the same rotation nite after nite???....if i never hear "here comes your man", "where is my mind", or "wave of mutilation" again i wouldnt complain.... i think all the fans should unite and hold up signs for bossanova and trompe at each show till they give it to us.... maybe im just spoiled cuz last nite was my 10th pixies show of the year...
dont get me wrong, the Pixies are the shit, had a blast at every show i been to, now i look forward to six nites in NYC, hopefully they bring out "all over the world" and "manta ray" by then |

TENTH!?! wow. impressive. all through the 90's i used to say that i'd spend five thousand bucks for the chance to somehow see the Pixies live. i didn't quite put my money where my mouth is this year, but seeing them four times has definitely left me satisfied. (i 'triangulated' the experience, plus one, so mathmatically it's been complete)
personally i would love to hear I'm Amazed, Brick Is Red, Allison, Dig For Fire, The Happening, Alec Eiffel, Letter To Memphis, Lovely Day, Motorway To Roswell, and The Navajo Know. like, i LOVE Nimrod's Son and River Euphrates, but I would gladly trade them to hear one of those others.
Yeah, it is SO DAMN COOL to be able to see the Pixies, but there was just something TRANCENDANT about watching Frank Black back in 2001 in victoria open with Holiday Song when i thought he was never going to play any Pixies stuff ever again, and then get this great show mixed with great Pixies stuff and his best solo stuff.
but then again that show made me kinda sad, knowing that was as close as i would ever get to the seeing the Pixies.
so now that i have, i'm really looking forward to Frank Black shows and hearing all the Frank Black stuff that i love, too. |

I thought the show sounded great, as is to be expected. The band's enthusiasm seemed to swell as it went on. Whenever there was a little screwiness everyone seemed to just smile about it; they seemed relaxed and more confident than when I saw them in the spring.

Oh yeah, I thought both opening bands were quite impressive. The Marble Index (I think they were called) had some awesome songs, eh? I was extremely impressed with The Bad Plus, but none of their CDs were at the table.

The Pixies Rocked! Great show. I hadn't been to the Plaza of Nations before and had heard mixed reviews of the accoustics. I agree that a glass and steel structure opening into a concrete building doesn't give the best sound, but it still was a great show. I've seen Frank Black twice and now the Pixies twice. The other shows were in small venues in Victoria with wayyyyyyy fewer people than this time in Vancouver, but I still thought it seemed like if I wanted to walk anywhere into the crowd - I could. The glass ceiling was really cool - you could look up and see the reflections of the crowd, the stage, the mosh pit hurricane of people swirling and crowd surfers. You could also see Joeys pedals and stuff that you wouldn't normally see. Very cool.
One thing I'd like to say is that if anyone connected with the Pixies reads this stuff is that we in Victoria would LOVE to have them back in our town. I know that Seattle and Vancouver are geographically close, but it costs a ton of money to go to the mainland, find a place to stay, half a day off of work to go to and return from a show. Victoria is a million miles away from some big concerts (it seems) and one thing I'll always love Frank Black is that every year (almost) he comes to Victoria. I think a lot of booking agents think that since Victoria is so close to Vancouver, why play both places? Thank you Pixies for coming to Vancouver again. Please come back to Victoria again someday soon. We love you. PS. our new arena will be done in the spring.

I wouldn't call it fast then slow, exactly. I remember it as fast then a little slower. It's been done much slower in the past, and I think I like it best that way.

I've heard them (on recordings) perform it in every possible arrangement on this tour - all fast, all slow, fast-slow, and slow-fast. |
