Do you like The Cramps?
If there were no Frank Black, Lux Interior & Poison Ivy would probably be my # 1 favorite "rock stars". I go months without listening to them, but when I put on their records again they become my favorite band and I completely overdose on their albums and jillions of live bootlegs.
Lately I've been playing them a lot because they're going on tour soon and I'll be seeing them Sept 25. I'm in DIRE NEED of a fun rock show these days and if you are as well, I'd urge you to go if they're playing near you. I saw them last year and, for a couple of senior citizens, Lux and Poison still put on a great, sexy show. And the Cramps audience, around here at least, is always a neat collection of old school punkers and rockabilly guys & gals.

Don't know much of the cramps aside from "Psychedelic Jungle"
('cosa Kid Congo Powers / I dig the Gun Club)

The closest they'll be to me is their 10-09 DC show.

I agree with Jason up top there. I love The Cramps.
I didn't know until just now that they have a new rarities collection coming out this month. Most indie music sites don't cover the Cramps. They're still outsiders after all these years. I kinda like that!
News from the Mordam website on the new Cramps thing:

For some reason I don't have any Cramps records, though I've meaning to buy some for years now. Right now Off The Bone is sold at low price at my record store and it sounds great, I think I'll get it tomorrow.

| Saw them in '79 at the Troubador. Lived next door to post Cramps Bryan Gregory, really great (& late unfortunately)very cool and a really nice guy. Nobody can eat a mike like Lux Interior. They still make it onto my compilations. A lot of people dismiss Bryan Gregory, I think his noise was influential, sometimes I think there's a little Bryan in Joey Santiago, especially when he spits cigaretts. |

| If you love the Cramps try get hold of some 80s Matchbox B-line Disaster - almost every revue I've read or person I've forced to listen to them makes the Cramps/Pixies/Frank/Stooges comparison. |

| Back in the '80s, I frequently saw Lux at the Pasadena City College flea market. He had a portable 7" record player he would carry around in his search for obscure rock 'n' roll singles. |

Hey hey, the show in Dallas Saturday night was alright. Some songs that the Cramps have been playing at every show since 1946 (like doing "Surfin' Bird" for their big closer while Lux Interior writhes around and fellates the microphone for eight minutes) are gone and other good old stuff has been put in, like "The Way I Walk", "Rock on the Moon", and "Primitive". They continue to also to play plenty of material from their underrated most recent album, which is a plus. I had a much-needed good time. Lux was in great spirits and I don't know how Ivy has managed to still look so good after all these years. I salute her. They're both badass rock n rollers for sure, but they must practice good clean living to be holding up so well.
If there was a letdown Saturday night it was the crowd. For last year's show in Dallas (on a weekday night) the audience was a stylish and fun to watch bunch of attractive rockabilly guys n gals, cute punk kids, girls wearing bondage gear, and smart-looking well-dressed older folks who might have listened to the Cramps 25 years ago.
This time, the crowd seemed more sparse and most of the fun-to-watch people were gone and instead I was mostly among a normal (in a bad way) Dallas rock show crowd. Where were all the girls in hotpants and black vinyl bodysuits? Why were there instead lots of fat hairy guys in Pantera and Van Halen Tour 2004 shirts? There were even a few crowd surfers. I don't know where the bouncers escort the crowd surfers to once said surfer has been plopped onto the stage, but I like to fantasize that it's before a firing squad.
I was hoping to buy HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER that night, but if it was being sold at the merch table I didn't see it. |
