So I just bought photoshop CS, and I don't know if installing this changed something on my computer or what.
I've never had trouble saving images off the internet, but now when I save them it only allows me to save them as bitmap files, not the original jpeg or gif.
What the heck?
I normally wouldn't post a computer question but it's for school and I need to save the pictures as jpeg... before wednesday.

What browser are you using? That's pretty weird, since you should have a choice in the dropdown menu in the save dialog. Not sure, but it may be that Adobe CS set itself as your default image app for your primary browser when you installed it, and confused your preferences (my guess is this is the scenario if you use IE). Check you browser helper app selections. If that's not it, there are a couple other avenues, but this is the first I'd look into. Sorry if you already tried this.
FYI, Adobe software preferences blow up kinda frequently, so you may find yourself getting as used to wiping them out and refreshing them as brushing your teeth. Are you on a mac or pc? |

Damn I wish I could buy a copy of Photoshop CS. How much was it? I found a Photoshop CS Upgrade at Best Buy for about 200 bucks, but I would have to have a legal, registered copy of 7 in order to make it worthwhile. I'm sure the actual program is quite a bit more.
As to your question, can't you just open the images in PS and then save them as high-resolution JPEGS? That would at least solve the problem for your class on Wednesday. Anything further I wouldn't know, because I've never really had any problems with Photoshop adversely affecting my computer.
BTW, Derek, this is totally off the subject of Photoshop, but it really only pertains to you as far as I know on this forum. I heard that Failure is releasing a DVD/CD combo of about twelve or thirteen unrealeased tracks, and a documentary to boot. I don't know when I will be able to get it, as it's about $30.00. But it's still cool. I don't know why the hell Ken Andrews can't keep a band together for shit, as Year of the Rabbit broke up a while back, after releasing their 1 (!) album, Hunted. It's the first music that Failure will have released in the past seven years. Damn but I wish they would get back together.

I'm on a PC at home. Though I'm on macs at school so it kind of stinks because I can't save a photoshop file at home then go to school and edit the original file. I'm using IE, so I'll try what you suggested, apl. Thanks!
I can drag the JPEGs in to photoshop and save them, but it's just faster when I right click the image and save it. I got Adone Creative Suite Premium for 400 bucks because it's for school. That includes photoshop, illustrator, go live, and something else. Pretty freakin "suite" because photoshop alone is about 500 bucks or something if you buy it retail.
Dude... Failure. Is there a release date? That makes me happy.

Hmm, you should be able to share the same Photoshop file between platforms. I worked tech support for a publishing company, where they had to share these files cross-platform onsite and with clients as a general rule, without extra porting software. What happens when you try to open a Photoshop file created on your pc on the macs at your school, or vice versa? This tutorial explains the quirks in how each system handles image files: http://www.sketchpad.net/port8.htm
But quickly, as long as you save the Photoshop files created on the mac with filenames of 8 or fewer characters, and *with a 3-letter extension* (.jpg, .psd, and so on), it should open with no problem on your pc.
Also, your .bmp format problem might have been caused if you installed another graphics/multimedia app after you installed Photoshop CS, like Quicktime for instance. The new app might have appropriated your image extensions from Photoshop, and caused that wacky issue of IE allowing you to only save as a bmp. If you reassociate the filetypes with Photoshop, you should be set.
Sorry if all of this is redundant to ya, just tryin' to cover all the bases with the remainders from my pathetic swiss cheese memory. As always, I could be totaly off...heheh |

It's not redundant. Hmm, I don't think I've tried using .psd files on a mac that I created with a PC. I tried with Illustrator's ".ai" file extension which did not work, so I assumed I'd encounter problems going from pc --> mac with photoshop file extensions. But this 3 letter thing is useful information!
I still haven't fiddled with the IE browser settings and crud. I'll probably do that now.

I used Macs in school for a computer art class a couple of semesters ago, and I have a pc at home. I was always able to transfer files to and fro pretty effortlessly and without any problems. Same thing for .ai files. Sorry I'm not more helpful.

this is a stupid bug with IE. clear your web cache and you can save as JPG again.
depending on your version of IE it should be like Tools -> Internet Options -> Clear Cache or Delete Files. |

dogjones is pretty stupid. 8mb is tiny. unless your computer is ancient if you're going to bother setting it put it at least at 64mb. |

So, mine was set to 2348 MB.
Thanks Ebb. That was very helpful and the glitch is fixed.

I have an 80 GB. So no need to worry about running out of space.
The problem is my RAM. I only have 256. Which photoshop will run on, but compared to those macs at school...

256 would definitely be rough for photoshop. not sure what kind of memory you have right now but you can get 256MB DIMMs at crucial.com for $43.99 and 512MB ones for $85.99.
so grab one of each of those and you're in good shape for $129.98.
edit: these are PC2700 memory, which is probably what you have, or better than what you have. and unless your machine is >3 years old it can use PC2700. |
