Pixies will make return trip to Boston By Joan Anderman, Globe Staff | September 2, 2004
Seminal alt-rockers the Pixies will return to their former home state of Massachussetts for a series of concerts later this year, according to the band's publicist.
Only two local dates have been confirmed so far. The Pixies will perform Nov. 30 at the Mullins Center in Amherst and Dec. 1 at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Tickets for both shows will go on sale Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. Additional dates, which will include a Boston venue, will be announced in the coming days, publicist Heidi Ellen Robinson Fitzgerald told the Globe.
The announcement ends weeks of speculation as to why the band -- which formed in Boston in 1986 and released four albums before breaking up in 1992 -- took so long to book local dates.
The band launches its US tour tomorrow in Bend, Ore., and has already sold out dates across the country, including an unprecedented six-night run at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom and a four-night stint at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom. The Pixies played a month of warm-up dates in small clubs in the spring prior to coheadlining California's Coachella Festival in May and touring Europe.
"I'm surprised at some of the numbers, but I'm not totally surprised there's a reaction," says Pixies frontman Frank Black. "We're very spoiled. We didn't have many humbling experiences, where we played to two people. Whether it was the first gig or the first big gig or the first reunion gig, the Pixies were always celebrated." The band's Los Angeles booking agent Marc Geiger says the Pixies are doing eight to 10 times the business they generated in the late '80s and early '90s, with many shows selling out in minutes. But the Boston area dates are some of the last to have been booked and announced on the US tour, which has dismayed local fans and perplexed industry observers. While Black now lives in Oregon, bassist Kim Deal in Ohio, and drummer David Lovering and guitarist Joey Santiago in LA, Boston's where the Pixies lived and worked and considered their hometown.
Another recently reunited Boston band, Mission of Burma, will open both shows.
"There was no evil conspiracy to make people in Boston wait," Geiger says. "It would be fair to say Boston took extra work. The demand is huge and the original plan didn't work out. The Wang isn't available. The Opera House has a play. We wanted to do seven nights at the Orpheum but even that wouldn't have satisfied demand. Plus, it's a Clear Channel venue and there were -- and are -- issues with Clear Channel."
The main sticking point, according to Geiger and Black, has been the issue of instant live CDs. The Pixies use the services of DiscLive, which records, manufactures, and sells limited edition live concert CDs immediately following shows. Clear Channel claims to own exclusive rights to the technology. The two camps continue to negotiate and Geiger is confident an agreement will be reached shortly. "All I can say is we're working it through," Geiger says. "At the end of the day, Boston will be treated very, very nicely."
Meanwhile, the Pixies are writing new songs and thinking about making a record together, but on the road the band is sticking almost exclusively with the familiar.
"We're not doing medleys or anything like that, although our set is almost like a medley because the songs are so short," Black says. He concedes though he's unfazed by the enthusiasm with which the band's return has been met, the reunion has exceeded his expectations. "I sort of forgot how much I like this music and playing with the Pixies," says Black, who's spent the last decade pursuing a solo career. "You kind of color your past with a bad attitude. And then when you make peace with it, you remember how good it feels."

Thanks for posting the article. I really like the last paragraph. Sounds like Frank is having even more fun with the Pixies this time around. I wouldn't want him to be playing and hating it. |
