So I live in New Jersey, the Garden State, and i currently live approx. 20 miles from Manhattan (my parents less than 8). That means that my life is being messed up by the Republican Nat'l Convention. I was hoping to go see some friends in the city this week and maybe take in a show, but because of the convention travel is going to be so fucked up thats it not even worth the effort. I understand why conventions happened in the past (as late as the 1970s, before the convention the nomination was still pretty up in the air), but in today's day and age, especially w/ an incubment GOP man, is the convention necessary at all?
All it appears to do is pose a security risk, shut down lots of travel, and inconvenience millions of people's lives. Ditto for the DRC - did we learn anything new from that? Sure, we got to see some good speeches, but what was the purpose really? I think its a pretty clear example of a "pseudo-event" which is only there so that old white men can get the pomp and circumstance they missed out on from their high school proms.
Agree? Disagree? Think I'm full of shit? Discuss!
PS This is how I've chosen to spend my 1000th post. I've been a member since the very beginning but i guess i'm still a "rookie" as i'm just reaching a K now. Anyway, i can't elaborate if i want this thread open, so discuss conventions!
