Not a big fan of the maple syrup, where ever it is made. The only thing good with maple syrup in it is ice creama and Moxie.

you may think i'm joking, but in some circles (that i'm heavily involved in) the origin of maple syrup is under intense scrutiny

But like I said in the other thread it doesn't matter where it originated;
"Canadian maple syrup is renowned for it's unique and rich flavors unlike anywhere else. Sold all over the world, it has become one of our biggest exports with good reason. The Canadian climate ensures that our maple syrup is abounding with taste and the richness of Canada due to the sweetness and quality of our sap."
Take that Vermont!

it matters to us (the true inventors).
everyone just assumes that Canadians invented it. the very suggestive maple leaf on their flag doesn't help to discourage this view.
the facts, however, are a little less clear cut.
a little less indeed.

Geez....kinda demented that the origin of Maple Syrup is a topic of debate....especially between the two countries who ripped it off the Natives in the first place. |

"The Chippewas of Michigan tell a story of the god NenawBozhoo, who cast a spell on the sugar maple tree many moons ago, turning the near pure syrup into what is now called sap. He did this because he loved his people and feared they would become indolent and destroy themselves if nature’s gifts were given too freely." (pg. 18, Wood, Rebecca. The Whole Foods Encyclopedia. New York, NY: Prentice-Hall Press; 1988.)
last i checked Michigan was part of the USA

Can't we just get along? Syrup was invented in BOTH of our GREAT nations.
From http://www.geocities.com/bigorrin/chippewa_kids.htm Where do the Chippewas live? The Chippewas are one of the largest American Indian groups in North America. They have nearly 150 different bands of Chippewa Indians throughout their original homeland in the northern United States (especially Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan) and southern Canada (especially Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan). |

" In the early days of colonization, it was the Natives who showed French settlers how to tap the trunk of a tree at the outset of spring, harvest the sap and boil it to evaporate some of the water."

"...some historians maintain that the Natives did not have the technology or tools to perform the necessary boiling of sap to make either product let alone both [...] it was the colonists from the south who brought the technology needed to create the mouth-watering "syrup" (pg. 24, Wood, Rebecca. The Whole Foods Encyclopedia. New York, NY: Prentice-Hall Press; 1988.)

That says the "boiling" of sap. They had already tapped trees though;
"They would use their tomahawks to make V-shaped incisions in the trees. Then, they would insert reeds or concave pieces of bark to run the sap into buckets made from birch bark."

tapping the trees alone does not produce maple "syrup". that is just sap from a maple tree (or, Acer saccharum, as we in the field call them).

Okay so if you're saying the natives could not make syrup but just tap for sap then your Chippewa story is shite. Therefore (again); "In the early days of colonization, it was the Natives who showed French settlers how to tap the trunk of a tree at the outset of spring, harvest the sap and boil it to evaporate some of the water." And the last time I checked, the French settled in Canada!

the Chippewa story doesn't claim that they made the maple syrup, does it? No. It states that the maple syrup was brought to them by the god NenawBozhoo. which, as we all know now, was what the Indians refered to white Michiganers as.
