I've really been getting into The Fall lately, ever since I picked up Live At the Witch Trials. I was shocked upon picking up Witch Trials at how easy of a listen it is. The keyboard on it is trance-like and mellow, and the guitars chime away a lot of the time, rather than just brutalize. I have some other stuff from their early days like Hip Priests and Kamerads (which is basically just Hex Enduction Hour) and the Legendary Chaos Tape, and while I like some of it, I don't think either are nearly as awesome as Witch Trials. I picked up Bend Sinister the other day and can't get into it as much. It's from much later, when Brix was in the band, and has Mr. Pharmacist on it. I like it, but it's considerably darker and more bleak than I'm used to the Fall being, which is saying something. I'm thinking about picking up the newest record, the Real Brand New Fall LP or whatever it's called. I haven't heard anything of theirs beyond 1990 or so, wherever the A-Sides compilation stops at. Any Fall recommendations?

These are one of those bands that I hate to even read about 'cos my ex went out with one of their guitarists.
To the best of my knowledge, I have never even heard one of their songs. And I live in Manchester.

The new one is the best in a while, but I'll always be partial to early/mid '80s Fall, including the "two drummers era": Hex, Room to Live, Slates, Perverted by Language, etc. "This Nation's Saving Grace" is always a good listen, and you can't go wrong with the Rough Trade singles (I'm not familiar with the recent comps so I recommend the "Palace of Swords Reversed" album). |

Chances are he was sacked by Mark so you should give in to what's right and embrace The Fall!

I wanted to go see them about three weeks ago but it was sold out months before hand. I've heard loads of cool stuff by them but its hard to find any of their good albums when they have so many mediocore ones. The only record I have of theirs is Extricate, which is ok. Hilary is a really great song from that album, really funny lyrics. I just noticed theres a song called 'I'm Frank'.

I wonder how many Fall fans there are in the world. The cover of the new Best Of says, "50,000 Fall Fans can't be wrong".

We are the Fall Northern white crap that talks back We are not black. Tall. No boxes for us. Do not fuck us. We are frigid stars. We were spitting, we were snapping "Cop Out, Cop Out!" as if from heaven.

These CD jukeboxes are everywhere, they were all installed in just two weeks and no one noticed. I only did notice because I saw the whole of the 'Kurious Oranj' LP on one in town and thought, 'Who wants to listen to that?'. I watched a heavy metal fan put nine Anthrax tracks on. Look at them, suss them out, they're weird, dead weird.---MES |

Mark E Smith is a genius, no doubt about that... The new compilation 50.000 Fallfans are great...includes hits like "Hit the North", "Free Range", "Mr Pharmacist", "C.R.E.E.P"etc. brilliant! I listened to the Fall for like 10 years now in periods...and I'm just appreciating them more and more...takes some time to get into some of their stuff though... I think some of the later albums are among their best: "The Unutterable", "Marshall suite", "Infotainment Scan" and the latest "The Real new Fall LP (Country on the click)" - all well worth the money... Life's not complete until you heard the Last commands of Xyralothep via M.E.S..

Lisbon of course, Lissabon is swedish... I saw the Pixies and The Fall the same night in Barcelona (Primavera festival) in May and I must say that The Fall made the greater impression...not that Pixies were bad but I find it hard to enjoy megasize gigs with the band on videoscreens these days... |

Yes, that´s the price... I never saw the Fall live, I was going to see them in Oporto last year but they cancelled and only went to Lisbon. It must have been a great show because it was in a small place. Everything is megasize these days! In my teenager times things were different, small places...better gigs!

I was there, but I didn't know about them, so I decided to see Franz Ferdinand and other headlining stuff. Better than Pixies... Could this be true?

I started listening Franz Ferdinand some weeks ago, I only knew one music, and I liked it! I usually prefer to listen the older bands, but there are a few new ones that are interesting.

Like Franz Ferdinand too..but I missed them in Barcelona...was stuck queueing outside for 2 hours so I was late...seems like The Fall are completely unknown in Spain...mostly english people watched the gig which was amazing...best rockconcert I've seen in 5 years..best since I saw Frank Black&theCatholics on the Pistolero-tour actually... No haven't seen the PBL-DVD...what's on it?

Many videos and a live concert - Live at Leeds.I bought it in Spain when, last year, I went to see Frank Black &theCatholics at Santirock. How they can be unknown in Spain? It´s weird...

Are The Fall "big" in Portugal? In Sweden they're not...they've played here once in 25 years and they'll probably never come back again...Live in Leeds in the early 80's...that's cool....saw that there is another live-DVD called Touch Sensitive from 2000 which also seems interesting...maybe I'll buy that...(that would be like Fall-item-purchase number 9 for me last 4 months...) |

All great bands are completely unknown here in Spain. We've got an awful taste for music and a dumb media always promoting annoying mainstream singers. I said.

Here's what Fall-net user says about Portugal: (haven't heard it myself - got the UK version of TRNFLP)
"I've listened to the USA version of THE REAL NEW FALL LP twice now. Some comments:
PORTUGAL - is the only new song, and it's really great and certainly interesting. I do not hear Mark E. Smith on it. For vocals two guys (from the band?) read what sounds like legal documents pertaining to some sort of incident having to do with the band. It sounds like "band" and "crew" are both accusing each other of unprofessionalism, and there is mention of some sort of hotel noise incident. Mysterious. Great guitar work on this track."

Never heard the band, but am reading The Fall by Camus which is rather good. Franz Ferdinand were in Barcelona? Guess I was below the radar for that one. Oh well...
