offerw was interested in hearing a review of Aimee Mann's Boston show at the Avalon a while ago, so here's all I have to say about it.
The show was pretty good; Aimee had a cold and botched thefirst song right off the bat. As any good performer, she laughed it off and started again which set a light and happy tone for the rest of the show. Her voice was strong despite her cold, but her setlist could use a bit of variety between shows.
I recorded some videos of her on my digital camera until a big bouncer guy came over and told me to knock it off. I did, but when I got home I offered the clips to fans on her message board; I thought they'd be especially interested because she mentioned the board during her between-song-banter. Well, some were interested but the Moderators had a problem with it saying that bootlegging was against Aimee's policy and that I was "also not winning any points by housing on Julian." See, Julian is a God-awful and perpetual opening act for Aimee as well as her lead guitarist. So, what the fuck do I care about earning brownie points?
Anyhoo, my whole topic was deleted even though I responded kindly, assuring them that I was never made aware of such a policy and that I wouldn't distribute the clips. Man(n), what assheads run that board! I hate power-hungry internet moderators. I made a thread about board censorship so now there's a bit of controversy over there; it seems other people have had their posts deleted for no good reason too.
Alright, this was all very boring but I promised offerw I'd talk a bit about it.

Was there any more to that thread than simply offering the video clips, and the resulting argument? If there was, then I'd say deleting it was inexcusable. If there wasn't, well, it was still wrong, but less so.

nope. aside from my offering the clips and criticizing the guitarist, not much else was said. when she/she told me I wasn't earning brownie points, I told them I didn't care about that and would say whatever the hell I wanted about the show/musicians because that's what a message board is for. As far as I know though, that had nothing to do with the post being deleted. Apparently, they delete any post offering bootlegs; but since I said I wouldn't distribute them, deleting the post is simple an aggressive act. Wouldn't it have served as a reminder of Aimee's policies?

You would think so. I guess they weren't really out of line if they had said they would delete any post offering bootlegs ahead of time, but I'm generally in favor of keeping troublesome messages and explaining why they're troublesome, rather than just pretending they never existed.

well, I only found out later that they do that. I don't believe it's stated anywhere on the site.

Coming down on you for cracking on Aimee's lame-ass package deal opening act was bullshit. However, on a privately operated message board, what's bullshit to me and you may make perfect sense to the owner.
Now, I do see where they're coming form with the whole 'no unauthorized video clips on the message board' thing. Of course, it should have been explicitly stated, but sometimers people make assumptions or forget to spell something out until it happens.
However, a couple of low-resolution clips with mediocre sound from a digital camera aren't worth anyone getting their panties in a wad.
Now, maybe they view it as a slippery slope issue, and feel if they don't nip this in the bud, eventually people will be posting or trading high-quality full-length shit.
Still, since Aimee's finally making a decent living off her touring and DIY record sales (much of which is web-based commerce from her diehard fans such as yourself), maybe they should worry less about someone doing some piddly fan-o-centric stuff like this (which technically infringes, but truthfully hurts no one), and more about trying to convince Ms. Mann from simply re-making the same record over and over again as she's done since the early 1990s.
I mean, jeez girl, stretch your range... Sing in a different key. Or try a different tempo! Or come up with a new way to track your background vocals. I know she found a little niche that she's comfortable with, but you could string her last 4 records together and they would all sound like one big long sludge of MANN.
I'll gladly fork over $12 to buy her raw, live in the studio garage band album with no overdubs, no pitch transposers on her voice, and none of that lush, black tar guitar tone she apparently bought twelve cases of at Sam's a while back.
Let's hear her play a Kramer through a Laney, or a Hondo through a Gorilla amp.
Get that big, buff, ponytailed guy who used to play sax for Tina Turner, and throw him in her band, along with Meg White on some shitty-ass drumset, Rick Richards from the Georgia Satellites on Les Paul and Tommy Stinson on bass.
Now, that might be an interesting album.

Thanks for posting about the show realmean, sorry to hear they bugged you at the Mann messageboard.
I've always enjoyed Aimee Mann's music ever since her days with Till Tuesday. I agree with Peter that she needs a bit of change in the sound of her records. The songs and lyrics are always top quality though.

I should make it clar that I do think highly of Aimee Mann, and agree that her songwriting and arranging are usually quite above average.
I just feel like she's wrapped up in some sort of sonic comfort zone, and that if she would only allow herself to tread in some unfamiliar waters it might inspire her to make much more lasting and interesting work.
