well, that aren't really new news.
check for frank's "robert onion", "valley of our hope", or the middle part of "speedy marie". on this site, there is whole topic devoted to frank's love for anagrams.

it's not an anagram.
it's an acronym/acrostic.

not noticed robert onion before, very clever, gives away what the song is about... apparently a good book, i'm tempted to buy it! darn that frank black.
so valley of our hope? anyone have the lyrics handy? i can't find them on the site...

Yeah, Frank seems to be a little unclear on what an anagram is. Maybe the song should have been called "Acro." On the other hand, "Ana" works because it can also be seen as a name for the character in the song.
This song isn't really a favorite of mine, but it fits well on Bossanova, and is a precursor to the excellent "Speedy Marie" and "Robert Onion."

Frank naming this song after the word "anagram" is ironic. Like rain on your wedding day or being stuck in traffic when you're already late. |

"Ana" is indeed a palindrome, but I don't think that's at all relevant to the song.

Funny, I never interpreted the title of the song as Frank (incorrectly) purporting it was an anagram. I had visions of a Latina surfer. Maybe something inspired by his short time in Puerto Rico.
Interesting how we all have different interpretations and understandings.
Frank, can you clue us in?

Here are the quotes Frank offered on the song, straight from Alec Eiffel's page:
"A surf song based on anagrams. Hence the title" (BF) "See `Ana'? It's lie anaGRAM" (BF)
S he's my fave U ndressing in the sun R eturn to sea (bye) F orgetting everyone E leven high R ide a wave
"She's, like, this naked surfer girl on a board on top of an 11-foot wave, y'know cruising in never-never land. Never-never ocean." (Black Francis in a Q article)
So he apparently used "anagram" at least twice in describing the song. That doesn't mean your interpretation is wrong, though. It's probably a combination of both.

Frank Black's brain is like a million 3d chess games playing concurrently with a pico second move limit. If you transpose the letters of Ana's acronym to form other words you'd have an anagram, that's how he meant it. Love hearing this song, nice imagery, brings back nice memories. Nice song. |

You're welcome. I think the song actually makes more sense than a lot of the Pixies' work.

And what other words can you form out of the letters "SURFER"?
