Yep, Chan Marshall is changing her name.
From now on, it's "Afasm Msafa".
AFASM means "arrow from a southern moon", it is her indian name.
I find this profoundly ridiculous. |

What a loss for the mankind it would be!
I tend to think that if somewhere in the world a girl renounces to sex it mechanically means there is one girl less for me!

Do all Cats change their names? Should I be worried that my little Chloe will now want to be called "Divine Original Goddess" or DOG for short?
I love the "Jesse Jackson" song by Cat Power. What the heck does the song mean? |

Buy 'You Are Free', it's good. I think Monsieur Adnan once said she reminds him of Tom Waits, but sounds nothing like him....if that's anything to go by. It made sense to me though. |

I've got a theory about this. If you make your sentence meaningless enough, it makes sense again. It's like surreal poetry. |

So I guess by your theory, your theory should make sense now?

It's a self sustaining theory. It proves itself. That's how I like theories. |

Is there any particular reason why her new name is a palindrome?
Egad, a base tone denotes a bad age!
"Arrow from a Southern Moon" would make a good album title.

...but a bad name for an artist.
easy to make a palindrome when a half of the expression doesn't mean anything. |

Good, let her fade into obscurity... She was reasonably novel at first, but I've seen way too many knock off female artists who mumble and drone and can't write a decent song so they put spaghetti western guitars and reverb all over it and call it art. 8 hours a day is enough sleep for me! Chan should change her name to "Warm Milk"

And they're trying to ban flag-burning.
Go figure.
For what it's worth, I liked Cat Power very much, until Eddie Vedder got involved. I feel like Chan "Afasm Msafa" Marshall got bit by the same shit-bug that took down Liz Phair.

Maybe it means "Moon from a Southern Arrow." It makes just as much sense either way 'round.

I like Cat Power... at times. I know What Would The Community Think? and Moonpix pretty well. A friend of mine feels like she's a total blues artist, even though it doesn't sound like the conventional blues often. I can agree with that.

Is this true? I know Dave Grohl weedled his way onto You Are Free (who hasn't he done something with in the last two years?)....but, Eddie Vedder?!
I tend to go through Cat Power bouts. I've just gone through one. I'm clean now though. |

Yeah, I believe I remember reading that he worked with her on "You Are Free" as well as Grohl. (At least, he supposedly does some vocals on a couple of songs).
It really irritated me, but I bought the album anyway out of much respect for her and her work. I was pretty disappointed in it though.

It irritated me when I found out Grohl was on it; imagine my disapointment now!
Even so, I like 'You Are Free'. I like the little paper packet it came in too, which generally, I dislike. |
