My sister's boyfriend who has been like a brother to me for the past 13 years had an accident on his bike this past Saturday. I'm having a hard time dealing with it because I don't know what to say and really need someone to talk to who has gone through this and is willing to talk about it or someone who went through the same thing I am going through to talk to. I just want to know what is ok to say and what pissed you (if that's your condition)/that person off (if it's not you). Send me an email or a private message. Or use one of the links to send me an instant message.

i'm sorry to hear that. it is terrible. i know a guy who's best friend became a quadriplegic after a swimming accident that i was witness to. i met him 13 or 14 yrs later and one night we talked about it in length. he had lots of trouble dealing with it then and as of today still has problems with what happene. all and all it is hard for everyone let alone for the person with whom the accident happened to. this post won't help much but i just wanted to offer my condolences. take care... |

there's this guy i always see at shows, so i guess we have similar taste in music.
i tried to get him to buy me a beer this one time when i was broke. didn't work. we're friendly though.
i'm sorry for your loss. but i think its most important to consider a person in any physical condition as a person first. disabilities are scary, but how much would it suck to be treated like a paraplegic before being "dave"? or whoever. his mind and soul are the same. he's probably really pissed off. tell him what you feel. don't walk on eggshells, its embarassing.
i will say a prayer for all of you.
love,
betty

I don't know anyone personally but just read an intersting article that most people that go through traumatic stuff like that go through a hard adjustment period and then after a year or two go back to being as happy/sad they were before all of it. Sorry...but I guess that its good he lived... :) Sometimes I have heard of a few people going against the odds and teaching themselves to walk again. Wish there was something I could do. |

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Once the original shock wore off I'm able to deal with it a little better. It's still hard as fuck though. Today he kept choking on his phlegm and I kept having to suction it out because he doesn't have enough strength to cough it out of his lungs. It sucks to see someone be so dependant on other people in order to live. I keep thinking that if me or someone else wasn't there to do it he could have died because he's incapable of calling a nurse to help him. This whole experince though is teaching me how completely moronic people in the health profession are. It seems like every day there is one more thing that pisses me off. The latest thing to happen was when a doctor asked a nurse to get a sample of the shit in his lungs. He gave her this little bottle to store it in. Now, the way the normal suction thing works is that there's a big bottle with one end attached to a vacuum and the other end that you shove into his mouth and/or lungs. This little bottle was the same thing excepth on a miniature scale. She puts the end that's supposed to go into his lungs into his mouth and says it must be broken, it's not working. I'm tell her shouldn't you attach the vaccum to it to suck it out. She doesn't understand what I mean at first and after much explaining she tries to pull out the part from the bottle that goes into his mouth. I'm like no I mean you have to attach the vacuum to the other end. She says that it won't work like that because it will go through to the big bottle. I tell her no because there is a little reservoir taht will hold it. She starts laughing and says oh yeah now I see. That incident gave me chills. Me, someone who has no medical training can use his common sense better than a nurse who has been trained to do this. I talked to my buddy right after this and told him how floored I am by what just happened and he told me that because of that and all the other stupid shit they have done to him he's afraid to be left alone with just a nurse minding him. I don't blame him. This is what the bottle basically looks like: http://www.neann.com/rqv%20nony%20on%20bottle.jpg

Just remember how Blessed you are to be capable of helping him.
And those of us with Five Senses and 4 Limbs are quite Blessed.
It's all a manifestation of god's will, whichever one you chose to form your own beliefs upon, this life that we live. That we are either a part of, or apart from, it's your decision, and only yours.
We are blessed, and no life is worth more or less than any other.
This is the word of a True Warrior. A Warrior with Honor.

re: hospital negligence
my dad just had major surgery yesterday to repair one of the muscles in his shoulder (which was fucked up from years of hard work).. apparantly it's one of the most painful you can get..
in the night his IV somehow came out while he was sleeping.. the IV that is also distributing the pain killing medication.. the nurse didn't discover it for an unknown amount of time, and he woke up in, what i'm sure was unimaginable pain. and the oral medication took hours to take hold after that..
this pisses me off too.
it's pretty scary really.
