It's now summer, and therefore salad time. Now, generally I don't approve of salad, it seems frivolous - you don't get a lot of substance out of it. But then it occurred to me maybe I should try, there's a vague chance that women find salad more appealing than if I was eating a bacon sandwich or fried chicken. Unfortunately, I'm not very inventive with salads: I usually just have lettuce and tomatoes and put olive oil and maybe some balsamic on. So does anyone have any clever suggestions?

Small pieces of good Danish Feta cheese for a perfect salad.

On FoodTv.com, also a US cable channel, they have lots of good, eclectic salad recipes. I've made a few of them, but it looks like my favorite (spinach with balsamic strawberries) is missing? :( |

Buy this book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0890190348/qid=1091286543/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-7204372-4391919?v=glance&s=books Unfortunately it's out of print, but Amazon has several used copies available. It is like the salad bible--70 completely different raw salad recipes that are all anything but the conventional lettuce and tomoato salad. And the guy who wrote the book lived to be 118 years old if that makes you feel good about eating his recipes. It also has lots of nutritional information (which, like I said, coming from a guy who was 118 when he died, has got to be pretty relevant) and daily meal plans utilizing the salad recipes.

I feel like I have to eat salad in the summer, there's a new law or something apparantly, we have to eat salad if the temperature is more than 32 degrees for two consecutive days. They are boring though. I tend to add chopped up lots of things, cheese apples pears oniond carrots evertthing, pickles work too.
OOh so do Baco's buy baco's they're the coolest. little bits of crunchy bacon flavoured bits very unsophisticated but yummy! They're the things you get at pizza hut salad bar, you can get them in the supermarket too. I wan't Baco's

Grilled Chicken, bacon-bits, hardboiled egg, western dressing, & cheese, lots and lots of cheese.

OK, now I'm just showing off, but Wilhelm might understand. My last day in South Africa, we went to the Big 5 restaurant in Vaalwater for lunch, and I had the best chicken salad in the world. I might try to approximate that later, with some chili chicken and some bits and pieces.
Any good recipes for dressings? I know to some extent salad dressing can defeat the object of a healthy salad, but its still some fine eating.

Sounds good floopus. I now have some feta cheese to go in, yer tasty lettuce und tomato, some carrots, red/green/yellow peppers, chicken, and stuff like lemon juice, wine vinegar, balsamic, EV olive oil and S&P to put on. Should keep me going, but I still think I'm going to need some rice as well...

Cobb salads are quite good... traditionally
prime rib chopped eggs toms cukes blue cheese (I perfer feta) on a bed of assorted greens and served with French/Catalonia dressing
And all the toppings are in lines across the plate...
You can be as creative as you want with a Cobb salad...
I love olives so I'd have to have olives...
And I am quite the fan of chef salads: eggs, peppers, brocoli, carrots, toms, cukes, red onions, ham and turkey with Ranch...

I almost forgot Ceasar salads (trad. Romaine, Romano cheese, Croutons, and Ceasar dressing, all tossed together) with grilled chicken...
Without any hesitation, I can say I can make the best Ceasar dessing in the world... it's so good I can't share the recipe, but one of the secret ingredients is raw egg yokes... |

if you're only having a salad, and nothing with it, yeah, you've got to beef it up.
slices of tofu are good for adding some protein. that can go in almost any salad. slice avocado too.. that'll add some "substance".
i also like beans in salads. black beans, pinto beans, lima beans..
a good compliment to a salad is a quesadilla. that's a nice healthy well-balanced lunch or dinner.
do you guys generally eat salads more in the summer?

Caribbean cobb salad
mixed greens toms cukes mango salsa blue cheese avacado and breaded turkey nuggets
(toss the greens, cukes and toms, all very finely chopped, and mango salsa, top with cheese, and avacodo and turkey nuggs, looks really pretty with all the colors)

Some beans, that might go nicely. And croutons, I'd forgotten them. How can I not have croutons?
We have some serious chefs here. Andrew, that all sounds mighty fine. Even floop's suggestions sound good.

I'm not a fan of salad, really. I guess I never grew out of my "vegetables are yucky!" phase. I'll eat them occasionally, though. I prefer them with meat and cheese, but that sort of makes them less salad-y.

what I had for dinner: (too hot and steamy in new york to eat anything but a salad)
sauteed zuchinni- I cut it crosswise into four sections, then turn each section on its end and cut into 6 pie-shaped pieces. then I sautee it quickly at a fairly high temp, so it browns lightly, but stays firm. I put it on a plate and let it cool while I'm getting the other ingredients ready.
Then I piled on top: garbanzo beans, mung beans sprouts, clover sprouts, kalmata olives, and the f***ing best lemon tahini dressing, recipe from my old job at the now defunct Grace Place of Richmond, Va. Weird ingredients, but it was I had in the fridge that didn't reguire cooking.
I ate it with brie and rye vita crackers. yum. |
