...as I gleefully learn to play bass.

This rocks...and soon, Kim-willing, I will rock, too.

I have a totally new appreciation for The Clash, Kiss/Donnas, Talking Heads, and The Cure.

There aren't enough bass players in the world. Anyone looking to start a band knows what I mean...Atleast not here in Ohio (except for Kim, of course, hehe.). You, Apl4eris, Spudboy, and I should start a band. that'd rock.

I've been thinking about learning to play bass too! Good luck, pfeffa.

I know exactly what you mean about the Cure. Wonderful bass lines. Simple but amazing.

This is so fun, I wish I'd done it sooner.

I'm just playing some bass tabs now, but it's pretty easy so far. I have a couple people who offered to give me lessons. I would love to be in a band. I can sing pretty well, too, but I'd be happy doing backup vocals, too.

Good luck with the bass, but if I may give you some advice, don't aspire to play like Kim Deal because (go ahead, kill me for saying it) she's not very good. Okay, so I suck at the bass too, so just forget I said that and have fun!

I myself have always wanted to take up the upright bass, but it seems like they're just so damn (or should it be, "damnED"?)expensive (although in reality they probably don't cost much more than a decent electric bass).

Nimrod...I played upright-bass for my school orchestra. They are very, very expensive but a TON of fun. It's well worth it if you can get one. I still don't have one but I will have one someday.

Re: Kim Deal. I love her voice on Gigantic. When she sings, "...into a shady place..." I always smile becuase her voice is so beautiful at that point.

Re: Bass Guitar. It is the easiest instrument to play, imo. Far easier than six string guitar and much easier than drums. When Paul Simonon (of The Clash) was learning bass, he used to put little stickers on the frets with the note written on them so he'd know which notes were which. And this "sticker method" is, in fact, how I learned how to play bass as well as guitar. I say, do what works.

its easy to play bass but difficult to be a very good bass player. kim plays very simply except for the thing that doog mentioned before. when i first heard that it frightened the 'sheeeeeeeet' out of me that she could do that. its crazy!

I would probably disagree here. It's not difficult to be very good at bass. It takes practice like anything else. However, with bass, practice produces fast results because it's not a complicated instrument. Call me crazy but I think this is a good thing.

I'd agree that it's easier to start playing bass, but to be a GOOD bass player is very different. And being a mad scientist musician who plays everything, I should know :)

I'm going to guess that you're kind of disappointed, but not enough to do anything about it.

Am I close?
