Earlier this week my fridge was left open while I was at work. So I cleaned out everything I thought would go bad - most of the shit in my fridge. But I had three olives in a martini last night and feel (24 hours later) like botulism is really setting in now. Can olives go bad like that? It seems like they would, I guess. I actually considered that last night before eating them, but in my state reasoned that the alcohol in the gin would kill any harmful bacteria in the olives. My next post may be "I Hate Myself and I Want To Die."

Love,
Prescott.

Hey sorry to hear about that.

A friend of mine made my husband and me some "dirty martinis" once years ago. We were so sick after them that we can't stomach the though of martinis...ewww ...I wonder if we experienced a similar phenomenon? Hubby tends to believe in the law of balances as well. The sushi philosophy of germs. As long as there's something near the food (like wasabi and ginger) that has antibiotic/antiseptic properties, then you'll be A-OK. I think he recently got worms from that philosophy.

Hope you feel better soon, Scotty!

Thanks for the concern guys. I threw out (but not up) the olives and took some pepto before bed. We're in the clear now. I neither hate myself nor want to die. Word of caution, though: I think olives can go bad and fuck you up. Google searches about it mostly talked about olive oil getting bad, but one source said not to eat olives if they're squishy. Take it or leave it. Thanks again!

Scott.

That sounds horrible and I'm sorry some of you got sick...I would think that if the olive oil wasn't cloudy and it all smelled normal, then, what could be wrong? I'll have to throw out any olives we have. It's been ages since I've had a martini.

Somewhere I read that olive oil can harbor harmful bacteria, but mostly that concerns flavored olive oil, and is commonly due to producer handling from the start. They recommend that ALL olive oil be disposed of after 4-6 months from opening. Other sources state that home canned olives are a big conduit for botulism. For more information Google "olive botulism." (In my close brush with food poisoning I'm too weak to post any sort of actual link.) A chef my girlfriend knows suggests washing off ALL olives straight from the jar. Do you think she's cheating on me?
