probably the very first albums....come on pilgrim, surfer rosa.
those were the albums were charles really was himself and was most original...kinda like the wierdest sounding albums, i guess.
doolittle is good but it's slightly commercialised, i guess...the style kinda changed for the fans....but it kinda went downhill from there....i mean in the later albums there were lots of good songs but they werent good in the samr way and there werent as many good ones...understand?

I would comapare his songwriting to Picasso... he has different periods... distinct but all good. His writing evolves over time. I like this because he's not stuck in a rut. So I would say all his periods are good. It probabaly depends on the individual taste of the fan...to what they personally think is the best period.

his best song writing period was 1989/doolittle era. most creative lyrically and musically, almost avant-garde. like early dylan, it was most likely due to the perfect balance of drugs and a lack of conscience.

His most catchy teenage appealing songs were round doolitle. As a songwriter - teenager of the year must be a peak. May there be more peaks to come.

Despite Surfer Rosa being their best album, Frank's songwriting skills are better on Doolittle. He created short, punky pop songs that resonate throughout most aspects of life and are endlessly listenable. He had to sacrfice much of the visceral, feminine beauty of the Surfer Rosa but in its place came a new breed of pop songs, among which is Pixies' best song, Here Comes Your Man. I am the most miserable, cynical teenager in the world but even that song makes me swoon and want to dance around like an eejit. A wonderful album.

Although Surfer Rosa and the Purple Tape are my favourite albums, I also love the later work. It wouldn't have been good if all the rest of the albums sounded the same as the early work: you would have a Bad Religion thing going on: most of the albums are good but they all sound the same, which gets boring after an album or 2-3.

The early stuff is visceral, energetic, oversexed and vicious - and is stunning for it, but the complexity, wit and sheer beauty of later albums (TOTY in particular) balances this perfectly. Frank said in the DVD that he lost the knack of writing short spontaneous songs around the time they were recording Trompe - but I think it was replaced with a more contemplative and intellectual style that more than stands on its own

My opinion: Three peaks

Surfer Rosa/Doolittle - Teenager of the Year - Dog of the sand

Teenager is probably the highest, but almost all of his stuff make everest look like a pebble.

(yay for bad metaphors!!)

So Im headed for the stereo store, to get a white noise maker, and turn it up to ten.

Really hard to say. there are so many good periods that it is kind of easier to point out the few parts that werent quite as incredible.

Maybe early pixies was the best.

but i also think dog in the sand is the best album ever recorded.

also cult of ray was nice and weird. his most similar work to the pixies since trompe.

ahh shit. i like it all.
