What are your favorite board and card games? I like a lot of the classics, like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit, but I thought I'd also bring up two more obscure games that I loved in my childhood.

The first is called Dungeon!, and it was made by TSR, the company behind Dungeons and Dragons. I guess it was pretty much the same concept as D&D, but much simpler. You moved around a board, fought monsters by rolling dice, and tried to collect a lot of gold.

The other is a card game called Mille Bornes. The object is to play mileage cards and try reach 1000 miles (hence the name), but there are also cards you can play on other players to try to slow them down, like accidents and flat tires. Most of the cards were written in both English and French, for some reason.

Anyway, has anyone else heard of those games, or have any other favorite games they'd like to talk about?

I love Monopoly...I just wish I had people to play with. I've been meaning to buy Simpsons Monopoly forever. Damnit. I played Dungeon once, and was very unimpressed...I played a little Dragon Slayer and Hero Quest with a friend who was actually into it, and that was cool. Clue is always a good one as well.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

There are SO MANY Monopoly sets out now, and some of them don't seem to make much sense. I mean, the Simpsons one is fine, since you're still actually buying properties. But there are others where you buy dog breeds, movies, Pokémon, and God knows what else. How does that work, exactly? "I built a hotel on this Great Dane!"

I like playing cribbage.

I had HeroQuest, and I used to play it with my brother. I think I would have liked it better if more people had been involved, but they weren't. Still pretty fun, though.

Add to the chorus, I played Mille Bornes. Can one of our French members tell us whether that was really a popular game in France or were we Americans being fed a marketing ploy?

I love playing games.

Favorite card games: Hearts, Spades, Poker (if I ever can get a game together)
Favorite Board games: Backgammon, Sorry, Mastermind, Clue, Cranium (fun with a group), Strat-O-Matic baseball

I almost always finish a game of Monopoly.
I used to love Risk as well.
But the ultimate board game is Diplomacy. There's no dice rolling, only strategy. Does anyone know this game?

I know Milles Bornes but I couldn't say if it's hugely popular here.

Bridge is one of the greatest card game I know. Tarot is brilliant but for some reason, it's completely unknown outside of France!

simpsons monopoly is quite cool. i have it, well i share it with my brothers, it's at their house at the moment as i'm kinda banned from playing board games. unlike a lot of the other monopoly variations (that seem full of adverts - like the coronation street/manchester version) it's good. ghettopoly is ace too.

http://www.ghettopoly.co.uk/

i think i've mentioned that before.

you did, we got it for my little brother for his 21st, he loved it because he's a little bit wu tang.

I used to play a lot of roleplay.. the dice rolling type not the dress up like a warrior type. I love all card games too. And I love they way the board games have been translated to pub quiz machines too, hours of endless fun

Two of my favorites are Stratego and Trivial Pursuit. As far as card games go, my wife and I both play quite a bit of euchre.

Ah, Risk. If you think Monopoly takes a long time, try playing that! And at least Monopoly only has ONE piece for each player.

I'm really very bad at Risk. But then I'm not really that good at any games. I'm not that concerned about it, though. They're still fun. I guess I'm just not ultra-competitive.

What city is the board in Canadian Monopoly based on? I've played the British version before. Boardwalk is Mayfair!

risk is purely based on the luck of the die roll. i once held iceland, and thus the americas, with one army for many many turns just by pure luck.

monoply is also pure luck unless one person in your game is an idiot, then it's whoever gets to take advantage of that person in the best way in order to win. also if everyone in the game is intelligent, then the only way the game can proceed after a while is if one person basically allows someone else to win by making a trade. trades are never even, they're always better for one person than the other because the properties are in no way even. basically monopoly sucks ass.

good games that probably know of:

euchre/hearts/spades (i know they're not exactly the same)
rummy/gin rummy/rummikub
chicken (pure luck but also fun because courage/stupidity can pay out)

good games you probably don't know of:

ohne furcht und adel (english version is called 'citadels')
wizwar (espceially with the expansions, it's kinda like Dungeon! mentioned above but much more interesting)
settlers of catan

lots of others i can't remember right now.

Favourite board game is probably chess, and favourite card game, which I hardly ever play any more is Bridge. Used to play both at school 'cause I was such a geek.

I think I have a quarter of a Bridge Master Point for playing in a tournament when I was 17.

And as a few people have said, cribbage is a great game.

It has to be Scrabble.

I recently bought a load of board games off ebay. Got some classic's from the 60's and 70's like Go!, Escape from Colditz, Totopoly. Not played any of them yet but will do soon.

I also had one of the old pre patent monopoly sets(1934?) for a while but I sold that on ebay a couple of year's ago - wish I hadn't now.

i love Gin Rummie at the moment.
i had never played it until last year, and the first time my friend showed me i thrashed him and he has never beaten me since....
i was rather good at it for some reason.

Other favs: 500, euchre, asshole, and playing snap with my wife.
also love last card...can play for days on end....

board games: the game of life - we used to play this all the time growing up with one of my sisters as the banker...she's now an accountant....
we also had the genius edition on trivial pursuit from the age of 10, so we're all geniuses now.
oh, and the game of knowledge is another brilliant game - like TP but easier

now for a board game i hate is pictionary...stupid game.

Monopoly, Risk, Clue are all classics. I also like Balderdash, Cranium, Mille Bornes, and some other ones. And, I've always enjoyed Chess, Chinese Checkers, and I probably could've gotten into backgammon if I'd been in Greece longer.

We have a card game that my whole mom's side of the family REALLY loves called Phase 10. If you see these cards somewhere, get them. Tonnes of fun. We also play chicken feet (a variation on dominoes) quite a bit.

I love pictionary and love it so much I've invented a drinking game around it called Impossible Pictionary (patent pending).

That's all for now.

My favourite board game is scrabble by far. I love it and always kick my family's collective ass.

I also like Pictionary, always good for a laugh, especially when pissed.

Although not strictly a board game, I LOVE table football or fusball (sic). I am very good at it though (my mate and I were the European Doubles Champions, beating the Czech Republic in the final in Spain four years ago).

Since you're friend of champions, I have a fusball question for you. Is there a rule against spinning the rods? Or is it just bad form?

Sorry Darwin, I have edited my post to include a crucial word I had missed out(it is my friend and I who were the champions, I forgot the I).

Spinning is indeed against the rules. It's for kids.

Trivial pursuit is genius, when my brothers and I were kids we'd go to my dads of a weekend and hunt round car boot sales looking for all the various types of triv we could find and then go back to pops' and play them, or listen to the tape ones in the car and play those, did anyone else call the little wedges cheeses or was that just my strange family?
