Here is an idea. Maybe the whole "My father wanted to name the next child Black Francis" is all a lie. Maybe his father only suggested the name Francis and that is where that name came from. He could have gotten the name "Black" from the 1986 sci-fi book, "Santiago : A Myth of the Far Future". At the beginning of each chapter there are snippets of an epic poem by Black Orpheus that describe the characters he's come across during his travels of the inner frontier. So Charles only used Black, because take the whole name "Black Orpheus" would be to obvious. It is also a coincidence that the sequel "The Return of Santiago" was issued in paperback April 2004 the same time the Pixies reunited. We all know how much Charles love Sci-Fi. Side note: Orpheus, in Greek Mythology, was a great musician whose music had the power to move even inanimate objects.
Not to much time on my hands.

I always thought of it as like a wimpy pirate name. You've got Black Bart, etc, and then over in the corner is Black Francis. Cracks me up.
Also, when I heard of the first FB album when it originally came out I thought that Frank Black was his birth name. I was bummed because that would've meant he had just reversed his real name to get his Pixie name. Now that I know the score, I think that's pretty funny too. |
