So whos the most famous person/all the famous people you've met? Lets see whos met the most famous.
Sean Bean - He supports the same football club as me so he was sat about 10 seats across (in tranmere!) nice man
David Beckham - Once had a loan spell at my home town club, met him there. Nonce

I went to school with Paul Scholes (greedy bastard) and Suranne Jones from Coronation Street (very attractive back then but she knew it). Steve Coogan also went to my school, but not whilst I was there so I never met him, although his brother taught me and his sister was in my class.
I have also met the extremely attractive bass player from Stellastarr*.
Oh and Mani, the bass player from The Stone roses/Primal Scream.
I think that's it.

I'll list the one I've actually met and spoke with for quite a bit; Jonathan Winters. He takes my train every once and awhile. We've have other celeb's on from time to time but he is the only one I've actually been excited about having on my train. I loved him so much in It's a mad mad mad mad mad mad world. The guy is quite hilarious.
Oh, I've met J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) too. I used to worship the guy as much as Frank Noit as much anymore though. We took a photo with him after an in store performance and that was about it. He seemed quiet in general.
I've spoken with (and drooled over) Laura from Superchunk. No big deal though, she was working the t-shirt table before their show. Seemed really cool and sexy in an unusual way.

Let's see. I met a few Oz authors at an Oz Convention, including Rachel Cosgrove Payes, Eloise Jarvis McGraw, and Eric Shanower. As far as musicians go, I've met Jian Ghomeshi (of Moxy Früvous), all four members of DaVinci's Notebook, our own Frank, Carolyn Mark, Neko Case, and Erin McKeown. In most of these cases, the "meeting" didn't really consist of much; I tend to be shy around celebrity types. For that matter, I tend to be shy around non-celebrity types, too. I also asked a question at a question-and-answer session with the two Johns of They Might Be Giants, but only Flansburgh actually answered it.

I did a workie placement at Cooking Vinyl, I met Jackie Leven (big folky), Billy Bragg (slightly stressed Essex geezer), and I made tea for Tricky, who is absolutely mint. He was going around bumming cigarettes off all the staff.
I chatted for a little while with the guitarist from the Hives, although they weren't famous at the time.
I interviewed a French band called M83 when they were playing the Mean Fiddler in London - they're cool guys.
Finally, and best of all, I was on the Really Wild Show when I was 11 and met Chris Packham. No Terry Nutkins though...

Hahahaha! Serves the yuppie scum right!
I briefly met Frank and Rich Gilbert outside the Concorde 2 in Brighton after a Catholics gig. Joe, who drums in Nimrod's Son, demanded a hug from Rich. He looked very scared but gave in. Dan from MTV2/Zane Lowe faves Kill Kenada is a pal o'mine, top dude.

I'm bad with "famous" people...
I accidently told Thom Yorke that he was too short to be in a band (I wasn't convinced it was him)
I laughed at Gaz Coombes for buying strongbow in my local offie
I told all of Gay dad that they were excellent support band material
I told Muse that once they got over the sounding like radiohead thing they'd be really brilliant
I bullied Reef into giving me free beer at a festival
I groped Steve Lamacq in a nightclub and got free tickets for afore mentioned festival
Paul Draper from Mansun, told him he'd be really fit if he got over being such a moody bastard
One of the guys from the unbelievable truth, tried my damndest to convince him to take me to paris.. was almost there
Called the bloke from green day a twat (or similar words) for puking on my foot
oh yeah walked straight into colin greenwood in a cheese shop and almost knocked him over
hmmmm there's more but I'm tired... I'll get back to you

This one doesn't really count because it's not me but my grandmother went to high school with John Updike or however you spell the authors name. He had a crush on her or something.

Gave Darby Crash(w/ an old friend) a ride after an X show. Met the Ramones at a video shoot. My experience is that the ones you respect the most walk away without warning in the middle of what you're trying to say and the ones you wish weren't on the radio will talk your ear off at craft service while you've got more important things to do. There are exceptions. Frank's probably not too rude. Could have met him at a poorly attended show in Danbury Conn. but didn't. Drat. |

i ran into peter gabriel at filene's basement (a discount "high end" clothing store) in boston the afternoon of the day my wife and i flew to ireland for our honeymoon. he was buying shorts and socks - and politely ducked out of an extended conversation with me by saying that his voice was strained from a performance the night before.
let's see... who else? frank black and the whole band, of course. j mascis. mike watt and a couple of his different bands, including ed crawford. richard buckner (an uber-earnest folkie with the greatest album of 1998 to his credit - "since"). john denver (didn't meet him, but was in close proximity to him at the johnson space center in houston, tx - where he was being fitted for a space suit, which was apparently all that nasa would allow him to do after declining his request to go into space). two members of the doors (manzarek and densmore). can't think of anyone else right at the moment...
oh, and i met bazza once in dublin!

And floop has just provided us with the current runner-up.
Rather uninterestingly, they both have the same initials, just the other way around.

I was hugged by Tori Amos after a show at Phoenix Hill Tavern in Louisville in 1991. It was unnexpected, and I forgot what I was going to say.
I think there are others, but that's all I remember right now. Oh, not "famous", but I was friends with people from Rodan/June of 44/Rachel's/etc. in high school.
Tragically Hip came to the Olive Garden I was hostessing at in 1993 or '94. They had to wait a long time for a table, so they surrounded me in the foyer (they're really tall) and made me pretty uncomfortable.

Well, I think I said "hi". I hadn't expected to meet her -the friend I was with said -"hey, I wonder where all those people are going?" So we went to where about a dozen people were gathered and a security guard was letting them in one at a time. The one right before me was supposed to be last, but he said "hey, you can come on in". I wasn't even wanting to. It was a weird accident, and then I walked up the trailer steps and she came over and opened the door, smiled and said hi, and hugged me. Funny lady! She used to be cool.
I don't know why she started doing that, but it became a tradition after her first tour. I doubt I was the inspiration though! hahahah

Yup moved there when I was 19 for a year or so before I went off to uni. It was great. Once you get past the pretention.
I did know a girl who was a total groupie, One new years eve she ran topless down Thom Yorkes road wailing like a banshee. Slightly disturbing you might say

Indeed, floopie. I seem to remember thinking something similar at the time. If I had been taller, I would have said it out loud.

Tre - I worked at the Turf in '72, probably before your time. Also the bass player for the Blues McGoos picked me up while hitchiking.( bass line in "we ain't got nuthin' yet" same as Modern Lovers "astral plain") Great guy, whatever his name is.And I say "hi" to Jonathan Richman every time I see him. He always says "hi" back. |
