I remembered seeing Bono talking about Nirvana in that horrible rockumentary, "The History Of Rock & Roll". He said, in reference to Nirvana, that Americans finally had their 'brand' of punk music...
It left me scratching my head and think that Bono was a fucking idiot: MC5, RAMONES, STOOGES, VU, BLACK FLAG, DEAD KENNEDY'S. ANGRY SAMOANS, CIRCLE JERKS, BAD BRAINS...and the list goes on to include many underground punk bands around the country thru the 70s and 80s.....apparently they slipped under his radar.
I wonder. Is this the thinking in the UK? That Malcolm McClaren effectively invented punk? I mean, What the F#*K? |

Ah, this is totally not the thinking in the UK. In general, we're pretty happy to acknowledge that you lot invented punk. Also, we'd be quite happy to completely disown Malcolm Maclaren.
However, I think British punk was such a cultural phenomenon that it's remembered just as much for that as the music.
I think I'd be right in saying that there wasn't the exposure in the US for punk that there was in the UK. The music was ace both sides though.

my gf says she used to see Steve Jones all the time at her local Trader Joe's in Los Feliz (again very recently). i think her dad knows him too. one more Pistol who lives in LA
i didn't know John Lydon lived over here, but i belive it. Dennis Hopper lives down the street from me and John Cusack, up until recently, had his kickboxing studio literally across the street from me. it's star-o-rama over here. |

Jones has probably lived here since the mid-80s, when he was in Chequered Past.
On a side note to the "rock stars in supermarkets" sub-thread...I saw Lux and Ivy at Whole Foods in Glendale a couple months ago. He waited outside while she stood in the checkout line. Over the years I've seen them around town more times than I can count. |

NY Dolls and the Ramones were the real first US Punk bands to make it "main stream" it seems. I never really got into the Sex Pistols and only experienced the post-punk stuff in the late 80s. I grew up in DC and saw Fugazi, Shudder To Think, and All. Freshman year, my friend said, "hey, remember the Pixies, 'Here comes your man'?" and we listened to Doolittle all semester until I almost died of mono. Good times.

Don't forget the Descendents. Knock 'em us much as you want, but I challenge you to listen to "Der Weinershnitzel" w/o feeling a little bit more juvenille or "Hope" w/o feeling a little bit of passion cuz it's one of the best unrequited love songs ever written.

i've read somewhere that the first "real" punk singles were recorded by the ramones and the damned almost simultaneously (1974 if i am not wrong). the mc5 and the stooges are considered as "protopunk" groups, but maybe that definition is good only for nerds like me. in my opinion it's pretty accurate, if it isn't bash me, as long as i don't hear another time that "never mind the bollocks" is the first punk record ever.

I know that the Damned released the first punk single in Britain, not sure if it was the same year as the Ramones first single, there's a good chance though. Doesn't "Personality Crisis" by the New York Dolls still beat them to the punch though?

it could be. i 've never been a fan of the NYD, i know that the band formed in that period but i am not sure about their first recordings.

They formed quite awhile before the Ramones I believe, I think "Personality Crisis" was their first single. Maybe it was "Trash".

mc5/stooges and garage rock of the 60s influenced the ramones..the ramones UK tour influenced the hell outta a lot of bands there, who in turn influenced others...
oddly the clash's and sex pistol's US tour had more of an impact on the general public in the states than the ramones did...especially odd considering how AWFUL the sex pistols shows were
and to take a little "punk" outta punk...the sex pistols and the germs (both producing 2 of the best landmark records in punk history) were created by businesmen looking to cash in on the punk-thing (sex pistols, mclauren...germs created by a parking lot contest for Smash Records).
go figure..fun shit
