You have to wonder how experienced those pilots were. I know new pilots don't make shit for money anymore. We've had a lot of people from the airline industry come over to work on board trains. I can't believe what I've heard some of these poor bastards make. $17,000.00 a year as a new pilot. The ones that make the real money have been there for years I guess.

Okay I'm off to run my very late train. I should get in around six in the morning tomorrow. My train was supposed to arrive in LA four hours ago.

Damn. I made a little more than 17,000 last year myself working in the food service industry. That is pretty sad.

Oh, come on!! That can't be true! $17,000 for an airline pilot?? There's gotta be some misunderstanding...like they may not be telling you about a profit sharing deal or something. I don't think you can survive on $17,000 in 2004. Hell, I made that in 1989 working for a glass bottle manufacturer.

I guess there is a great degree of variance depending on experience. Do a search of commercial airline pilot salaries and they lay it out. Sounds like if you stick with it it eventually pays off.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&edition=us&ie=ascii&q=commercial+airline+pilot+salaries&btnmeta%3Dsearch%3Dsearch=Search+the+Web

Median annual earnings of commercial pilots were $47,970 in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $33,830 and $70,140. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,100, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $101,460.

I live about 2 miles from Burbank Airport. This was an interesting incident from a few years ago. In spite of excessive speed on a short runway and orders from the tower to abort, the pilots overshot the runway and nearly plowed into a gas/petrol station.

If you insist on working in Fast Food and want to make money. Then perhaps you should try Papa John's. I hate their products but they pay their managers 30k-60k depending on skill levels and there is no grease, only flour, dough, sauce and toppings.

I worked there for several years before working in the IT industry and my last year with them I made close to 100k as Director of Operations.

Check 'em out - they never did me wrong and the benefits were great. The only thing that sucks is the smell of onions on your hands!

And knowing your Founder and CEO is a megalomaniacal perv (allegedly has underage girlfriends). I wish it weren't so, because he used to be a real success story from my hometown. Plus, I love their pizza.

That's the most Homer Simpson thing you've ever said, Homer. I'm expecting to hear Marge's voice say, "That was Planet of the Apes" and you'll respond, "It sure was."

I made almost $19,000 in one year working for a local bakery, and I wasn't always getting 40 hours a week then. A lot of times 37 to 39. And I got by just fine on that, paying $450 in rent plus about $100 in bills every month, and I had plenty of money to spend after all that was paid for. It can be done.

No, but you really have to keep focused and be on top of a million rules. It really takes awhile to become good at the craft. It's quite easy to mess up and when you mess up your on the street for thirty days without pay. Letsw say I'm going along and the dispatchers calls me with a speed restriction. I have to bring the train to a stop (there's a rule about that) copy the restriction which will kind of go like this "Amtrak train 14 do not exceed 10, one, zero, (or whatever) miles per between mile post 318.4 and mile post 318.5. No flags displayed. I repeat that back they give me an okay time and off I go. No in the mean time I'm concentrating on all the strenuos stuff involve with running a train by myself for over five hours a day. lets say i was at mile post 404 when I copied that by the time I get up there I bettyer remember to do ten in this area that I may normally do 79 over. If I forget and the conductor in the body of the train forgets to remind me I'm in trouble. This is only one example of many many possibilities where you can mess up. When things go wrong involving a train it usually always getsput on the Engineer.
There was a work crew once that messed up and put there back hoe on the track before they were supposed to. They had permission to FOUL the track after the arrival of such and such a train. My buddy came around the curve into his station stop and saw this entire work crew scurrying for their lives. He hit the back hoe three different times each time shoving it further up the track. With the first hit he saw the operator trying to leap to safety but he got killed in the accident, the point of that is the first thing they tried to do was see if my buddy was two miles over speed so they could say it was his fault.
My career can be really enjoyable but it is alot of responsibility too. It's not for everyone. I killed a guy last year and I honestly feel I have saved many many lives just by the way I choose to operate my train. There are always people in the track. I see some of the most stupid things done on the tracks. I've worked with guys back east that have hit over thirty people through out their career.

Okay, that's enough

Wow. That was seriously interesting, (and more than a bit unnerving!) Jason.

You're welcome to regale us with tales of your train conducting daring-do if you ever happen to come through Columbus, OH on your way to the East coast. We'll keep the bourbon (or whatever your beverage fancy) a'flowin'!

I grew up with trains -there was a Chessie System line (not sure of the line's ownership, but Chessie ran it a lot) right in front of the house I was born in in KY. I miss hearing the rattle and the whistle, and I miss cabooses! More train stories! woo-woooooo!

Thanks!
Next time I'll put more time into it to keep the typos to a minimum.

Here's a short story about bad parenting.

One trip I got one of these called in slow orders (speed restrictions) at milepost 392.4 or something. 10mph no flags displayed. Now this is in Ventura right near a camp area that runs along the beach. I'm on a curve getting down to speed to find this speed restriction and right as I am down to ten and rounding the curve I see (standing in the middle of the track) first, a little boy about seven, with his bike. Second an adult (whom I assumed was his father) and behind the adult a little girl of about four sitting on her bike. Oversized helmut, training wheels and all. the little boys back was to me the father was facing the little boy, fixing his helmut strap(you know, safety first son!) and the little girl directly behind him stratling her bike looking at the both of them.
What's the point? I usually fly around that curve at sixty. But that day not only did I get down to my 10mph, I got down to 1mph and took the opportunity to tear that guy a new one.
That was almost the dumbest thing I've ever seen anyone do near the railroad tracks.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, someone out does the last.
