We have a local independent, privately-owned radio station, here in Columbus, OH at 101.1 FM - WWCD. They play most of the good stuff late at night or on the weekends. Daytime is top 40 alt crap usually, just enough goodness smattered in the mix to get you in the zone and then smash you over the head with Pearl Jam or Linkin Park.

But in one week, a week from today, Jello Biafra will be guest DJ-ing.
I think I and my husband are going to camp outside the radio station.
So, what I want to know is -do you have a local station that keeps the torch burning? What do you listen to on the radio? Do you? Let us know the number and the call letters/frequency/city, and when we all go on our road trips this summer, we can check 'em out!

Bring me your Clear Channel escapees, your real rock-n-roll souls... Tell me your radio stories!

Do you guys know we just passed thru a BLACK HOLE in space?

we have a great station in LA, kxlu.com 88.9FM, broadcast out of Loyola Marimount College. it's been voted best college station in the country many times. they "broke" many cool bands (Nirvana, Beck to name a few).. and have lots of great shows. unfortunately they don't have the hugest broadcast area, but they do stream online..

don't believe the hype about "indie" 103 which now has as many commercials as every other station.

and KCRW has basically gone to shit too, in my opinion. i like "The Open Road" (on right now) and a few other shows, but they've gotten out of control with the soft-edged, electronic beat music and international/jungle/ambient shite. it's geared towards over-40, wealthy, quasi-liberal, volvo driving yoga-enthusiasts who want to feel like they're hip and progressive.

but that's just my opinion.

[EDIT] irony. just minutes after i posted this they're now playing Bam Thwock on The Open Road. more reason to like his show.

That's cool, floop. I haven't heard the new song on the radio yet.

I've got random insomnia, so I listen to Coast to Coast AM pretty often too. Any other C2C listeners out there? I'm addicted to that opening synth music!

Going to see Bob Edwards interviewed this Thursday - I know there are some NPR/Bob fans here. I'll report back with the juicy tidbits.

Are those college radio stations, Shakey, or corporate-owned, or what?

I didn't get a very good idea of UK radio stations and how the industry is structured when I lived there for a semester. All I ever heard was the BBC.

I was so starving for music that I bought my first CD player while I was there (1994). But I didn't get a walkman, oh NO! I had to buy a "portable" Panasonic boom box, that weighed about 30 pounds, and carried it back to the dorms some 2 miles (?km) away. I was desperate, is all I can say...

John Peel on BBC Radio 1 is good, I'm no regular though. He plays all sorts of interesting stuff, generally. You can listen to it on the internet too. Probably around 5pm eastern in the USA. Tues/Wed/Thurs I think.

We had an independent station here.

It decided to drop it's format (which was kinda crap. Feel-good hippy shit.)

Bought out. Now it's a pop-country station.

-

Our local NPR station (WHRO) picked up a couple of their DJ's.

I've stopped listening to NPR during their 'rock' shows. Bleh. Hippy shit.

The nearest thing we have to a decent radio station here is Xfm (www.xfm.co.uk), which is OK during the day, but usually pretty ace during the late night slots, loadsa new bands etc.
Also, they have people like Ricky Gervais and Adam & Joe to do shows, who are just hilarious.

In Kansas City, 96.5 The Buzz.

They play the usual songs, RHCP, Incubus, and on occasion they will throw in something new or obscure. Like today, on the Nineties at Noon they played a song by Henry Rollins--Liar. I never heard it before. Pretty good though. On Sat. nights they have Harddrive which is strictly songs that rarely if ever get played during the rest of the week. I try to catch it to hear new stuff. That's when they usually will play a Pixies tune or two. Haven't heard FTBC played yet though.

Cool stuff guys!

So, the still-burning question: should I camp outside the radio station and harass Mr. Biafra next week??

Make him a Lime Jello dessert in our brain-shaped Jello mold? Is that going too far, or not far enough? Any requests for when he DJs? ;) You can listen to his show -on June 27th- streaming here: http://www.cd101.com/sections/listenlive/index.asp
He'll be playing stuff from his label, Alternative Tentacles. http://www.alternativetentacles.com/
