Wow. I just watched Gang Tapes, a film shot entirely on home video (whether Digital or VHS I don't know... probably digital). It's the pseudo-documentary thing, but it's gotta be the most realistic film I've ever seen. And possibly the most accurate portrayal of street gangs, too, though I would say Boyz N The Hood is a better MOVIE (in that it works better dramatically).
A family of white folks are on vacation in California (Hollywood at first) and get lost, then get carjacked, and their video camera is stolen, too. From then on, we are in the world of hardcore gang bangin' drug dealin' thugs. And it's an unforgettable experience. I really don't want to say much else other than that yah'll should watch it. There's some great acting in it, though I guess a lot of these actors are former and current gang members. Makes sense.

I've watched Gang Tapes 3 times now and it still really stands up strong. I really like to show it to people w/o telling them anything about it, because it starts out looking just like home movies of a family on vacation (and there's no credits) and then just out of nowhere, they get car-jacked. So great. It's a total reinvention of the hood film.
