I LOVE this movie! So lovely and moving and sweet, in a great fucked-up way. The only part that bugged me was her "sit in" at the end. It reminded me of another movie (like Cry Baby or something) and that was weird. But, otherwise, it is perfect. And so beautiful to look at too. I love the way his office has a sort of Garden of Eden thing happening.
Anyone else a fan?

Huge fan! I developed a new found respect for James Spader because of that movie. His character is a hilarious freak!

I like this movie a lot, and not just for the fact that the content was so.... well erotic. It was also funny and moving and very well acted. I've always enjoyed James Spader, and now I really like Maggie Gyll....en... hall. However that's spelt. Great movie.

I really like this movie. Yeah, I agree, Ramona, now that I think about it, the "sit in" was one of the lesser moments of the movie. I had completely forgotten about that part and was trying to figure out what you meant by "sit in" for the longest time. Then I remembered. It felt like something from a different film, like you said, so it probably has been done before. But yeah, all the scenes between James Spader and Maggie Gyl and the development of their odd relationship were great. I particularly thought the "I'm not gonna fuck you" scene was great, especially when we see her back afterwards. Really weird stuff.

The SIT IN part is very reminiscant of another movie. I can't think of what it is though. Up until that part, I thought it was all very realistic (in a fantasy way) and then that sort of bummed me out. But it is mostly redeemed when Spader comes in at the end and they have the whole lovely romantic part. I cried!
Now I want the soundtrack. The music was all really good.

No, it fits right in. He helped her come to grips with her preferences and to get over the parts that were a problem. She takes ownership and comes out, and at the same time uses her abilities/preferences to help him overcome his problem (fear of intimacy). Also there's the nice role reversal; "topping from below." It all fits in quite nicely. But maybe I'm not remembering it that well; did it seem that her behavior at that point was something that should have been more private and intimate?

It was weird to me that people knew all these intimate details (like his ex-wife women tells her "well done with the worm!" How did she KNOW that? That was odd) and while I liked the whole idea of her (Lee) not having any fear or shame about the relationship, and in that instance (even though she was doing what he told her to) she was really being the strong one, the whole FAMILY/FRIEND part was just...odd to me.
I don't think it was him helping her come to grips, I think it was HER showing that she really loved him. That she would go through this physical and emotional test and SHOW him that she really MEANT it.
He had a lot of shame about it (like when he writes her "I don't know why I'm like this" and tells her "You have to go or I won't stop") and she doesn't have that at all. She realizes they are the same in some way and she helps him to accept who he is while she is accepting herself.
That is how I took it, anyway.

I thought it was a very very odd film, something made it weirder but I just couldn't put my finger on. Thats not to say it was bad just weird. I don't like Spaders style.

But he's so convincing in Secretary and also in Sex, Lies and Videotape. Too bad Andie MacDowell went on to do such crap after that one. The whole thing about not being able to masturbate because of the garbage, and Spader just adds it to his collection. Great stuff.
Ramona, I think we are saying pretty much the same thing. Maybe the point of the family coming by was another aspect of taking control, much of which she had previously left to them.

TarTar, I was going to say that! (about 2 Days in the Valley) Spader is awesome and spooky in that. I just watched it again a few weeks ago.
As for the family part in Secretary - I watched the writer & director commentary last night and they said that parts of it are in her imagination, which made me like it a bit more. I also love the whole parallel of her arriving at his office the first time dressed like Little Red Riding Hood. That is brilliant. All the symbolism and undertones are really right on.

Ooh, I haven't seen 2 Days in the Valley, but I've seen Sex, Lies and Videotape a bazillion times.
I like the family/sit in part, b/c I think it's what it takes to convince him that she's not a victim and he's not just a sicko; her martyrdom proves to him that this is what she wants (whereas the previous secretaries probably were just victims).
I need to see this again soon. |

| It's a really charming, witty film. Until the 'sit-in', I was really wondering 'How is this gonna end?' Maggie Gyllenhal is so sweet....she has an amusing cameo in Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind-she sleeps with Sam Rockwell's character, and she just looks so bored! Has anyone seen a cool James Spader movie called The Music Of Chance? Spader and Mandy Patinkin play a pair of card sharks who lose a bet to Charles Durning(and another guy)and have to build a wall as payment, but things ar'nt as simple as they seem....it also stars M Emmet Walsh, Chris Penn and Samantha Mathis. Spader's character could have been played by Steve Buscemi! Spader ususally plays such calm, strange guys. |

Of course, and because all cool things lead to one Charles Thompson IV, the movie's best line is Spader saying, "I am going to be frank." Lowercase f, but still...

This thread is two years old. I watched the movie last night, twas fun. I wouldn't exactly call it "lovely and moving and sweet", but on the other hand they didn't take profit of the plot to show a bunch of S&M for the sake of it and kept a solid story all along. As everyone else I got a bit put off by the sit-in scene but the movie ended nicely. Both actors are excellent.
