| Dog In The Sand tour....they where really 'pimped out' in suits opening behind a curtain with Dylan's 'All The Tired Horses'...then exploding into Remake/Remodel....Frank didnt have a guitar for the first four songs.....and they played 'So Hard To Make Things Out' which up until then, I had never heard live.....and it was good. Very seldom are you sure that no one on earth is 'rocking' as well at that moment....and that was the night. (Montreal, Jan.22, 2001) |

DITS Tour, back to back shows Friday/Saturday in San Francisco. Eric Drew Feldman played so you had the complete band like in the studio. One night was mellow, the other rowdy. Both were great shows. I've seen the band eleven times and each show is special.

Two shows tie:
October 22, 1994 - Oneonta, NY - He opened for TMBG and he walked out with three guitars--wearing 2 and carrying 1. He preceded to go beserk and I waited for the band to come on, not knowing it was just him all the night. He was fantastic, no one there knew what to make of it because no one was really into him at all. He did Jacques Tati, and an amazing Duke of Earl, then broke a string and he asked for any requests and I shouted for Rockaby and he obliged.
March 8, 2000 - Los Angeles, CA, The Mint

These three shows were a taste of things to come. The C's in full form having just recorded--or perhaps in the middle of recording Dog in The Sand. The night was filled with mostly new stuff that was so tight. and enthusiastic. Great venue--intimate. Except fone night for some broad yelling out to Frank (from 2 feet in front of the stage) that she wanted to fuck him. They just came out (with E.D. Feldman and didn't stop. It felt like it was 1964 or something. There is not enough room to explain.
Having been the one who posted this topic, I didn't realize how difficult it actually is to boil down all of his shows to one or two as they have all been so rewarding--and I've seen him around 20 times. The guy gives a great show nothing more to say. |

Feb 1999. Trees. Dallas, TX.
They opened up with "Bad Harmony" and Frank remarked that it was the first night they played it. And it was my first time hearing "I Switched You" which stuck with me cuz was good hearing a new song where he screams a lot. They closed with "So. Bay" and Frank looked drained after that. It's the sweatiest, most rockin' Frank & the Catholics show I've seen. The crowd was really into it and we were calling out for an encore, but didn't get one. |

| Baltimore, MD in 2001 for Pistolero (sp) tour. Western Star blew the roof off the place that look like it help 200 people. Play a strung out version of Six-Sixty-Six. Frank was into it and I stood right in front of Lyle W. Ears rang for two days afterword. They played Sister Isabel as the closer. |

Pistolero tour was in 1999 I believe....2001 was most likely DITS Tour. |

The Dog In the Sand tour in Vancouver - it was in a big old theatre so you could sit down during the slow tunes (check me getting old I'll be going to venues where they serve chicken in a basket next) and we could smoke weed. But the best thing by FAR was that the sound was AMAZING, all the pedal steel and atmospherics were as crisp and sweet as could be. They played for over 2 hours and threw in some blinding versions of Pixies tunes. I saw Frank in Glasgow in 96 and at the Astoria last year and of course at Brixton Academy this year - he is always excellent no matter who he is playing with.

The Astoria show in London was my very favorite. I was right up in front and screamed all the words with a bunch of forum folks, it was great. Also Brighton the night before was awesome b/c McDave put me on the list and I got in free. Whee!

| Camden underworld 2003, FB and his takamine mesmerised all who witnessed. Opened with into the white and debuted a few SMYT tunes. Also snapped at a couple of eager beavers who were singing the new tunes at too high a tempo in his face. I pitied the fools. Being told to zip it by their idol in a very caustic tone. One man a guitar has not been so captivating since Elvis. ( i would imagine ) |

Actually it was his Martin D28 guitar that was doing the mesmerising  I asked him where his Takamine was and he told me he had left it at home. I agree though, awesome gig.

Em, was that last year? I was there! It was pretty ace, but I couldn't choose between Astoria last October and Shepherd's Bush Empire in December. Maybe the Astoria, simply because it was the first time I'd seen em and it was just so exciting.

April 2001, First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN.
Dog In The Sand tour.
Over 2 hours of non-stop great music. I believe I counted 35 songs (+ or -).
That was the first time I saw him performing Pixies songs also. It was a great, appreciative audience. When they finished "Where Is My Mind?" for the main part of the set, the way they stood there and soaked in the audience's response was great. The highlight was when they ended the encore (I'm pretty sure it was the end of the encore) with "If It Takes All Night"...that was the most "into it" I've ever seen FB & The C's. It was great. I heard "Oddballs", which is a favorite of mine. Also, starting out with "Fiddle Riddle" was great. And to top it all off, I met the man outside in front of the club.

Oops, nevermind. Just saw Mac E. Doobage's post. Thanks, Mac, I DO like to hear of the old days - I experience much more talk about DITS. Which, as good as it is, does not provide reason for us to overlook "the frank black experience".
By the way Mac, did he play "Places Named After Numbers" at that show? |

I would love to share stories about the early days, as I was a fan then, but since I was 17 in 1993, and lived too far away from any of his gigs.

I've seen him play a number of times, but my favorite memory of a Frank Black show was in Athens, GA. The show was "over" but he came back on for an encore playing Duke Of Earl. What struck me about this was that the audience started singing before he did, and he smiled. Never did forget the chanting. Sort of etched into memory "Duke, duke, duke..."

I was far left, next to the speaker stack (ouch in my ear...). Irritatingly, I was right next to the gate where surfers had to go back into the crowd, so I was moving for them the whole time.
I just remembered, weren't there two nights? I can't remember which I was at... Good show though, for sure...

maybe for me emotionally seeing FB the first time on the first album tour, in Cleveland, OH at the Agora Ballroom, was the best. It was just a thrill to FINALLY see the man in person (having never been able to see a Pixies show all through high school -- 'school nights') and then having Joey S come out to much fanfare and celebration, to play almost the entire contents of the first FB album with Frank, who was in a jolly mood, commenting on the Rev. Horton Heat's neat hats and chatting with the crowd (and telling them to stop moshing! which I always appreciate). That might not have been the most 'rocking' show - the DITS shows probably take taht prize, but it terms of intimacy and overall emotional feel for me, that was pretty much tops. Though in 99 when I saw him at Maxwells in Hoboken comes a close second, since the palce was so small and I was right up front, with my nose about 10" from the man's strumming hand! That was a pleasure, too.
Though now that I think about it!!!! --- the first show I saw him play post- COR but pre-Catholics album release (first show I saw with the catholics) in which he brought out Wave of Mutaliation for the first time post-Pixies, along with first hearing of Catholics material, that was a freaking chill-fest of a concert, I think it was 98 at Tramps in NYC. Wow.
So I guess those three are my faves.

I saw them on the dog in the sand tour in 2001 and at Leeds festival the same year but the best gig I have ever been to was at shepherds Bush in december 2003, it was absolutely perfect. I've never actually seen FB solo, hope he tours next year.

| It wasn't the best show I saw of his, but when I caught him on the BLD/DW tour he did this amazing version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" with just a lap guitar backing him up. Did/does he do this regularly? It was pretty incredible. |

The Philadelphia show in November 2002. Because it's the only one I've ever seen. <g>
Actually, I saw both an in-store and a regular performance with the Catholics that night, and I think they complemented each other nicely. The in-store was just Frank, and he talked a lot and explained some of his songs. There wasn't much talking with the Catholics, but there was a lot of rocking.

Solo gig in Temple Bar Music Centre in Dublin last year. Was the first time I found out he was playing in time to get a ticket (thanks to this website) to see him.
It was just magic. Dunno how to explain. Just was. He horsed through loads of songs, and was brilliant. Pity there were so many Pixies-only fans at it though. |

oct 2003 vicar street, smyt tour, seen him 3 times before that but for some reason they were smashing that nite.. rich gilbert is an amazing guitarist and very enteraining....

| I've seen F.B. with & without the Catholics several times and I get chills every time - it always feels historical. I'm one of the few people who's witnessed the F.B. & the C.'s power trio due to his MIA "guitar right" that night in Danbury Conn.('97?) There were about 18 people there, very cozy but I doubt if they covered gas on that one, he played an amazing Brackish Boy among others. |
