Picked up the Ween DVD the other day and I was pretty happy with the setlist. They kept tunes from White Pepper to a minimum (mercifully no Bananas and Blow) and instead chose to include a bunch of older tunes like Touch My Tooter and Big Jilm, both of which I'd never heard live before.
But it got me thinking how much I really enjoy these guys. I think Pure Guava is slowing taking the lead as my favorite album over The Mollusk. So creative and unique!
Some favorite moments from Pure Guava:
Little Birdy: "see the birdy make me laugh, take a little birdy bath" The Stallion Part 3: "hey dude! He's the Staaalion!!" Big Jilm: "what's the biggest thing you ever did done see, big Jilm?" Goin' Gets Tough: hilariously voiced as a bunch of homos. Play it Off Legit: a phone conversation put to music. Brilliant! Sarah: beautiful little tune. Flies on My Dick: great guitar soloing and all the "La La Las" are funny. I Saw Gener Cryin' in His Sleep: "you fucked it up again!" Hilarious! Touch My Tooter: The crescendo after the solo makes me want to sing along. Morning Glory: the softly-played piano behind all that noise makes a very eerie effect.

How can you not like Bananas & Blow? It's hilarious!
But not to sidetrack things, it was a decent live set... really hate how they (as all bands do) almost completely ignore the keyboards, even when he's doing some awesome stuff. This is akin, as far as I'm concerned, to having Deaner doing a wicked (though invariably too long) solo and focusing the camera on Gene as he stands their sans guitar watching.
But some great moments. I don't remember the song, but when the drummer (whose name has suddenly escaped me) starts playing with his hands, that was great. I remember very little specifics though, so I can't discuss at great length I'm afraid.

Bananas & Blow isn't good because there's absolutely no subtlety to it. How is that different from other not-so-subtle Ween songs you may ask? It just is, dammit! Also, I don't like Caribbean, Jimmy Buffet-sounding music.
You mentioned keyboards: I really like what they did during Zoloft, especially since that pitch bender is the only reason that gag kept working.
I'm not sure if you watched the video for Transdermal Celebration in the special features yet. Firstly, it's not how I envisioned the tune to be at all. But thinking about it, it's actually very touching and I find myself thinking about it at random times.

I haven't seen the DVD yet, but I am looking forwad to it. Fuck, I've owned the Pixies DVD for serveral weeks now, unwrapped it, and that's about it. I should watch that, huh?
anyway, I',m gonna be a Ween fan soon.. |

Ah yes, Zoloft. That song is definitely held together by the keys during the "high/away" part. And by Gene floating offstage for several minutes. That was hilarious. I'm not generally a fan of their long mid-song jams (i.e. Voodoo Lady, which goes on far too long imho), but it feels right for this song somehow.
I agree with you completely on Transdermal Celebration... not at all what I was expecting, but still it fit really well with the song and was quite touching. That's the beauty of art, I guess... interpretation. Is it true that that was done by a fan of theirs?

The only Ween show I ever saw was here in Raleigh a few years ago during their White Pepper tour (which I recorded with my stealthy stereo mics). During that show, Voodoo Lady ran for 12 minutes. I used 3 mini-discs for that show (32 songs all told). They later said that that Raleigh crowd was the worst crowd they ever played to. Oh well.
I hadn't heard about Transdermal Celebration being done by a fan but it's definitely done with Flash. It pretty eerie but I like it.
Normally, I'd send you an e-mail about this, Dean, but no one's reading this thread but you and me anyway. Besides, I can't get to my Yahoo mail from work (they block it, the bastards). Unforseen delays have prevented me from delivering Eardrums & Airplanes to you in a timely manner. But I still want you to do the keys for it. How about a rough, acoustic/drums/vocals-only demo so you can get an idea of the tune? That way, you can come up with a cool keyboard part (and a keys solo, which I've made room for in the drum programming) and at the same time, I can work on proper bass/guitar/vocal recording. What say you, kind sir?

Sounds great, I was wondering if anything had happened with the song recently actually. We're currently in the middle of recording some demos anyway, so now's a pretty good time for me to get a feel for it and record some rough ideas. You want me to set up an FTP for the transfer or do you have something more convenient in mind?

We don't need no stinking FTP, I'll just post the MP3 somewhere and I'll send you the URL. Thanks bud!
