Hey guys and gals, I hope you're all good and basking in the summer... is it actually summer yet?
Anyways, as you might know, I've been playing with a Pixies "tribute" band for over 2 years now. The real thing is back together and looking like they're gonna be writing new stuff! Hooray!
What I'm wondering is your thoughts on the tribute band now that the mighty mighty Bostonites are back together? I was talking with the rest of the band about how lame it seems to have a covers band doing their stuff, putting myself in the position of a punter I'd say it was pretty corny.
But then again, it's not like we play much at all (every few months at a couple of venues) and make little profit out of it, it's just a lot of fun.
Now that there is lots of media interest in the Pixies, there is definately scope for us to tour the UK in the summer, but it feels kinda wrong to me. We all play in originals bands and write our own stuff, so it's not like we just want to be the Pixies and ride their coat-tails for a quick buck.
Is there still room for a "tribute" band in Pixiesland? I'm just curious about your thoughts on the matter, any response will be really appreciated!
Take care people, Doog x

well, i certainly have no problem with it and would love to see you guys sometime (age issues are a problem at the moment). i don't really see it as a bad thing that you might still be around while they're together again. |

I think you should do what you all feel good about doing. If you show respect, I see nothing wrong with it. I suppose there is always the ironic cautionary tale though...
In Las Vegas a couple weeks ago, The Moody Blues were playing for $30 a ticket, while at a classier casino a block away, their cover band were playing for $5 more. Sad.

Wasn't there a joke in The Simpsons where the Moody Blues were opening for a Moody Blues cover band?

There are some great cover bands around, my pa went to see an REM cover band and he said it was brilliant, he went to see the australian pink floyd also despite his trepidations he thought they were great too! I think cover bands only become a horrible cliche when they try to be the original band.. and do it badly. I've seen some beatles cover bands on TV, trying to look like them and sound like them with fako accents too. Horrible.

To be perfectly honest, I think it's lame to have a cover band.
It's one thing to cover a song, nothing wrong with that, but to have the groundwork of your band to just be someone else's work is just living in their shadow. Cover bands have no place in the music world.
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but that's just how I feel. |

There's a possibility we'll do some more far flung dates over the summer, I dunno. Basically anywhere with friends so we can crash over!

for one minute I was afraid that 'your thoughts! here!' was about a mp3 of your cover of Bam Thwok
my point on your cover band has been made clear a few months ago to me there is no reason to have a tribute/cover band that focusses on one band while that band exists. What I suggested was a Frank Black/Breeders cover band there is need for that now and it would be fun to see

no offence, but i seriously, have always thought that cover bands were the bottom of the creative barrel. i don't understand the idea behind emulation, when you have a creative medium as broad as music at your finger tips. |

Shit Doog, what else you gonna do? You've got the damn Black Francis guitar. You're locked in now. That is, unless you wanna just send that guitar over here to California. I'll take good care of it.

Doog - do what makes you happy. As someone who has played in a bunch of different bands - I can safely say that cover bands bring out the kids and make good money. It may not be much of a creative process, but it sure is fun to play for a bunch of people who already like the songs. Besides, you can take liberties with covers. My band primarily does original songs but you should hear our cover of Bryan Adam's 'Summer of 69', it's rediculous. We also do, Devo's 'Girl U Want', and the Christmas classic, 'Let It Snow' (which you can hear at our website) - www.thecroutons.com My point is, do what makes you happy. End. |

Hahaha I love Devo!
Like I said, I'm currently recording and touring in an originals band, and have another under the way (Beach Boys meet Sonic Youth), so it's not like I'm not capable of writing my own stuff.

I agree with This Guy that cover bands are kind of limited in scope, but hey, if it's something Doog wants to do and people keep showing up, why not? I probably wouldn't go to see them, though.

Doog I'm also in a Pixies tribute band - we cancelled our shows when we got the reunion word - more time to work on original stuff, but it's so darn fun I hope the boys change their minds. I saw that the tribute in Seattle continues to play shows (but then the Pixies don't play there until September... maybe it will change?). So I think there is room for a tribute band, and some disappointed "fans" here think so too.
If you're playing to an empty house and/or not having any fun, you'll know you should have stayed home. Play Allison and lots off Trompe and Bossa and that will set you apart from the real thing! |

Yes and you are Nimrod's Son! (does that really make you the son of incestuous union?) Pleasure to meet you. Love your website, but dude we are Canadian. Here's another link to add to your list: http://www.terminalcity.ca/Music/current/Pixie+Dust.htm (interview with your counterpart when the Pixies came through this area in April and were not offering up interviews themselves.
Always the next best thing. |
