Has anyone considered the possibilty of running FB web radio on the site.
Would be pretty easy to rig in Flash etc, could play a choice of anything from the FTP site (hence wouldn't need to worry about copyright restrictions. Running MP3s through flash means they cant be downloaded to the users machines etc so nice and same and legal, the flaming lips do something similar on their official website. I'm a web-designer/flash designer and would be happy to have a crack at it if anyone thinks it a viable thing to have on the site.
Anyways, just a thought.

I don't think we'd have the bandwidth for something like that off the site, but that's more Dave's dept than mine...

It's reaaaally easy to save streamed audio onto your hard drive. Blows any DRM protected files out of the water. :) |

It might be possible to do something with the material on the FTP site..would that be desired?

Wouldn't surprise me at all - but if we used stuff from the FTP - then the issue becomes mute, as they would just be ripping files that were legally downloadable anyway

What sort of bandwidth etc would be needed to host the media? - I was thinking of the FTP stuff - as its reasonably copyright safe. Could maybe be a featured concert, with a few "liner notes" or something about the gig.

Probably quite a bit, especially if we were to stream special content (i.e. not just old boots, etc)...
To give you an idea, the FTP server itself had peaked at over 70 GB traffic in one month. It's hard to estimate without knowing what quality the stream would be at or how long/continuous (i.e. would someone be able to listen at the office all day or not?), but you can imagine it wouldn't be trivial. We have over 5000 registered members, after all.
That said, it's worth looking into.
