Little is known at present, but apparently just a few weeks ago he was selling off a bunch of his most prized personal possessions - like his early sealed VU albums - on eBay.
It looks like this may be a suicide.
A friend of mine knows him fairly well, and told me a while back that he's been clinically depressed for years, and took massive amounts of antidepressants all the time just to get by.
This breaks my heart.
If anyone out there is unfamiliar with Quine, you should look into his history and his work. He's one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of punk, alternative rock and even avant-garde jazz.
Much of the music that is discussed on these boards likely wouldn't exist or sound remotely the same if not for him.

I know very little about him, as I'm only beginning to discover the whole NYC punk scene (I bought my first Television record 2 weeks ago). But I've been meaning to listened to the Voivoids for a long time now. I think it's gonna be my next purchase. RIP.

Yes you should definately get the Voidoids "Blank Generation". He also plays on Lou Reed's "The Blue Mask" and Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs"

I think he played on Lou's New Sensations also, one of my favorite reed records. This is really sad. I had heard that his wife died a year ago or so. Maybe he just couldn't stand to be apart from her.
Quine was incredible. His guitar work on the first two voidoid records and blue mask will always stand in tesamony to his brillance. I will really miss him. I'm not sure exactly why, but I've always felt a kind of kinship with him. Maybe it was how personable he was on his website. Maybe it was that we shared a great love of the VU. I will always be greatful for his records and for the tapes he provided for the first VU bootleg series. God bless you, Robert Quine. R.I.P.
I'm going to go now and listen to blank generation.

For the record, he didn't play on Lou's "New Sensations", Lou did all the guitar parts (and a good job at that). Robert Quine is definitely ome of the most underrated guitarists of all time. His work on Lou Reed's 80's records is worth checking out. "Waves of Fear" and "The Blue Mask" from 1982's "The Blue Mask" are amazing. He also plays guitar on the Elektra records "Rubaiyat" comp on a version of the Stooges "Television Eye", which is fucking insane!!!
It's always sad to lose musicians, especially ones whose work you admire deeply, or are just beginning to appreciate.

And the title of the D.V.D. mentioned in Frank Black Francis' post is called "A Night with Lou Reed". It was filmed in 1983 at N.Y.C.'s "Bottom Line", and was his first concert since 1980. It's available from Image Entertainment.
