I'm curious as to how the French people look at D-Day...are they grateful or cynical?

Cynical? I really don't see how people could be "cynical" about that.
And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there. |

What about the German involvement? I'm OK with it, but I could see how people could be offended by that...

Just with the view of America that is shared with most of the world right now and the whole "France vs. America" (Freedom Fries) thing that went on not too long ago...It just wouldn't surprise me if the younger Frech people didn't appreciate it at all...

This year is the first time that Germany have been involved in D-Day commemorations. The veterans are not happy with it, understandably.
The way I see it, these are different people to the Nazi's, yet they still lost family and friends, so I'm for it.

You didn't say "With the Anniversary." so I thought you meant in the original D-Day...and the only German involvement I could think of would have been the Nazis...so..uh..yeah..

What we didn't appreciate is that "freedom fries" thing. It was very ridiculous. And the headline of Fox News - "Bonjour Monsieur Hussein", or the Sun's headline "Chirac is a worm" (I don't like Chirac very much but this was really perceived as an attack on the French people) - funny if you know that both the Sun and Fox News are owned by Murdoch.
But this has nothing to do with the D-Day. People who made all that freedom fries thing didn't fight in the WW2. And we don't feel grateful to THEM.
You know, I think most of Americans would be really surprised about our view of America. Most of people here really dislike Bush and his administration. This has nothing to do with what people think about America, and American soldiers who gave their lives to liberate France.
I don't want to be acting like an asshole here, but what do you Americans want? After 9/11, everyone in France felt and still feels deeply affected. But this cannot justify everything. My father's family originally comes from Sarajevo, where much more innocent people got killed, yet noone considers this as important as 9/11. Why should the lives of these people be less worthy than those of Americans? And I'm not speaking about people getting killed in Rwanda - because they are black africans nobody gave a fuck about 600 000 civilians getting slaughtered.
My point is that it doesn't really matter if Chirac and Bush agree or not, the fact is that many guys gave their lives to liberate other people from the Nazis. This has nothing to do with nationalism.

You missed my point Crouton (i think that my English is sometimes not as clear as would lile it to be). What I wanted to say is that your question was not really a question. "Are you grateful or cynical?" isn't really a question.
