what a fantastic show.
was the most high-energy gig i have ever been too.
the band was totally hot, the crowd was unbelievable and the sound was actually really good.

started with winterlong, and the show for me really got going with vamos which i think was 4th with normal speed version of nimrods son and holiday song in between.

1 encore of gigantic, wave of mutilation (normal) and finished with into the white.

what a fucking great gig....

bring on tomorrow.

oh, and the delays were actually pretty good - i was very pleasantly suprised.

no worries mr cheese...if tonight was anything to go by, tomorrow is gunna be fucking mental.

i don't think they played any non-routine songs...
only velouria and subbacultcha off bossanova and trompe le monde...but frankly i didn't mind a bit.

didn't say a word to the crowd entire night....actually i think kim said hello before the last song of the main set.

the crowd waited round for about 10-15mins after the 2nd encore emploring for some more, but it wasn't to be.

there was only the 1 guy videoing the show that i saw.

wish they had the keys for gouge away, and i think i prefer the slow-fast version of nimrods son....

though i think the highlight for me was vamos...so much energy, and seeing joey put his guitar on the stand and just watch it creating all the feedback before fiddling with some nobs and then using a drumstick was great....
but i still think it should be used a set closer..

It was great, but I did hear a few "there only here for the money" type comments (which is true) that put a bit of a downer on it, and a few about the half a hour we didnt actually get, as they were billed to play untill 11 ( which I agree with aswell). I still thought it was a really good gig and am looking forward to getting my DiscLive, "In Heaven"(Kim singing) merged into "Wave of Mutilation UK Surf" was erm interesting, wich reminds me they also played the album version of "Wave of Mutilation" in the encore.

Not in order, but everything:
Caribou
Nimrod's Son
Holiday Song
Bone Machine
Broken Face
Something Against You
Gigantic
River Euphrates
Cactus
Vamos
Debaser
Tame
Wave Of Mutilation (LP)
I Bleed
Here Comes Your Man
Dead
Monkey Gone To Heaven
No. 13 Baby
Hey
Gouge Away
Velouria
Subbacultcha
Winterlong
In Heaven/Wave (UK Surf)
Into The White

And it was absolutely fantastic, even if my friend Amanda is swearing vengeance because they didn't do Where Is My Mind ;-)

Maybe it is for the money, but based on that, the mind boggles as to just how intensely Frank would scream on "Tame" if he really meant it

stupidly good night, managed to bag a place at the front and my wife managed to bag franks set list, what a night, wish I were going to the other dates. amazing.
Three cameras were filming it, one on stage and two in the press pit.

We were out at 10:25; bear in mind that's because there was just the one encore yesterday.

I think they were due to come back on for a second encore because the guitar tecnicians set up the guitars. I suspect Frank was not to happy with the amount of crowd surfing taking place during the Into the White in the first encore. Hope they do Where is my Mind on the Friday or Saturday shows.
Anyone else had any problems with the Netburn download? Mine only downloaded the first 3 tracks on each disk. I have a ticket out with them so hopefully it will be resolved.

i didn't think they were due for a 2nd encore cause i thought the guitar techs were clearing up - wrapping up all the guitar leads etc.

i was a bit gutted about no encore, but in all honesty, what they played was awesome, so i definitely left happy.

oh, and i think the mechandise truck was late turning up at the gig - cause when our bus was driving behind the back of the Brixton Academy, we saw this big old truck with about 10 people in it unpacking all these pixies shirts etc.
so thats why none was available prior to the gig.

No they definitely set up the guitars, then after a couple of minutes the records came on and they came out again and then started taking the guitars away.

I am quite impressed with Netburn they came back within minutes and say they have reset my link. I cannot try that until tonight, but they have also given me an MP3 version of the concert which suits me as I want to play it on my Creative Zen player. The sound is really good much better than it sounded in the 3rd row in front of Kim. The instruments in particular sound really clear and well balanced.

well damn those crowd surfers then is all i can say.

the sound where i was standing - centre, on the edge of the "mosh-pit" was damn good.
much better than i expected.
kims' bass and vocals were a little quyiet, and frank was often drowned out by the crowd singing along, but apart from that, it was great.

My first Pixies gig = best gig ever!

Here's a review I wrote for another message board:

Reviews of the Pixies reunion tour (which started a few weeks ago in the US/Canada) have been overwhelmingly positive. The music press is notoriously tough on events of this type. Comments like "sell out" have been mentioned, but on the whole, the feedback has been startlingly good. This was to be the first UK Pixies gig in thirteen years. Hopes were understandably high.

Pixie-mania had clearly taken hold of Brixton by the time we arrived. Touts were out in force, selling individual tickets for over Ł100. After spending the next hour trying to avoid flyers, we finally made it inside the Academy. The atmosphere was heavy and intense, as the banked venue began to fill with assorted Pixies fans. They ranged from cute, teenage, indie-girls (standard gig fodder) to 40-something, old-timers in vintage T-shirts.

The support slot was filled by The Delays. Their melodic, indie-blandness was met with vague approval, although I'd have expected something a little more unusual for such an event. They finished with their semi-hit, Long Time Coming which a few people seemed to recognise.

Soon after, The Delays were but a distant memory, as Kim Deal's red bass and Joey Santiago's Les Paul were brought on stage - met by a cheer from the front rows. Excitement was rising like a teenager's erection at a nudist beach.

Moments later, Pixies took the stage. I've never heard such a noise. The applause just went on and on. Dave Lovering whipped out a camera and snapped a few photos of the crowd before sitting down for another night's work at the drum kit. Kim grinned her cheshire cat grin and Black looked happy to be back in the UK. After a wave to the audience, Joey strapped on his guitar and broke into the opening song, a cover of Neil Young's Winterlong. Many of the younger faces looked bemused by this MoR rock cover, obviously thinking the band had gone soft in their old age. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The setlist was as good as I could have hoped for. Off-beat tracks like No. 13 Baby, Tame and Dead featured alongside the obvious hits such as Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven. Vamos was a show highlight, as during the solo Mr. Joseph Alberto Santiago rested his guitar on it's stand. He signalled to Lovering, who threw him a drum stick (and continued to play with the other). Joey then attacked the Les Paul Gold-Top with the drumstick, creating a wall of dischord which eventually moprhed into the Vamos riff. When the stick was finally thrown back to Dave, he caught it and added extra beats to the faultless drumming.

On Caribou, Black proved that he can still holler like he did in the 80s. His voice is slightly less nasal now, but his added girth seems to have given him even more power - and not at the expense of the tune.

A couple of tracks from Trompe Le Monde made a welcome appearance. Subbacultcha was amazing, as was Cactus - a song recently covered by Bowie. Before we'd had time to recover from the fact that we were witnessing a live Pixies show, it was over.

Cheering, clapping, screaming fans wanted more and sure enough the band returned for the encore. Black started playing the acoustic intro to Into the White started whilst Kim lit another fag. She started playing the bassline and then seemingly realised that it was her turn to sing, and spat the cigarette across the stage. Last year, I was blown away by Frank Black's solo version of this song, but it had nothing on the full Pixies line-up.

The three song encore came to an end and the band stood shoulder to shoulder and soaked up the intense appreciation that many of their UK fans had been storing up for over a decade. Death to the Pixies indeed.

okay, I need advice... I wont be near the front for tonight, what with my ear problems (I have earplugs though) so how long did you all have to queue last night? I'm not bothered about seeing ash, so are we talking a good 30 minute queue? and what about the toilets?

these things are important :)

these reviews are great!!

At 7.30 there was no queue - everybody showed up more like 8.30.

Ash are supporting tonight?

Can't speak for the ladies toilets but the gents near front of stage was OK (i.e., you could get in without queing).

Are you the 4AD person? I made your web site, many moons ago. Nice to see its being well cared for.

Nice review (especially "teenager at a nudist beach...") - not sure I'd call Winterlong MoR though!!

I do sincerely hope Ash aren't supporting on Friday when I go, I do believe they blow goats

At 8.30 there was a large queue but it only took about 5 minutes to get in. The bar upstairs was the least busy. The t-shirt stall was mobbed. The t-shirts outside after the gig (ripoffs obviously) were a tenner and of dubious quality ( I am wearing one right now).
The Pixies were frankly awesome. I had seen them last in 1989 and the anticipation levels for last night were getting out of control. I live in Brixton and am contemplating going back to the venue tonight to see what business the touts are doing....

Last night you could have still quite easily have got in front of the front crowd barrier just after the Delays had finished. But it got really packed there by the time the Pixies came on. We got to the venue at 7:10 and it took about 10 minutes to get in, we had the bonus of seeing Frank Black going into the tour bus whilst we queued.

When we got in the first two rows were taken so we went in the third row in front of where Kim played and stayed there all night

kinda presumed they'd be going backstage or somewhere like that.

wow - dave lovering magic show tonite - that IS going to be fabulous!

but yes, there was a VIP area - the missus and i were trying to find a way out afterwards and tried to go via the VIP door....we were told politely to go away.

we managed to find a nice spot just as the delays were beginning and stayed there without a problem.
but yes, it definitely filled up fast once they had finished.

i had to pick my tickets up at the venue, so i had no queue and was inside the gig in approx 30 seconds.
