what does everyone think of the magnetic fields? my first "real" exposure to them was a random purchase of their newest album this week and i really dig it.

| have mixed feelings. I heard them in a record store several years back, and it sounded magical- I was compelled to ask the (surly) clerk at the counter what we were listening to. Even though I was broke at the time and wasn't buying much music, I bought the one he recommended- 69 love songs volume 2. It is magical- I was obsessed with it when I first purchased it, and I go back to it often. But then I heard them do a live set on the radio, and Steven Merritt sounded like such an asshole- you know when musicians do guest spots on radio stations and they're just so uncommunicative- it's like why bother? Unlike the ever-entertaining and sociable Frank Black! So that experience kind of turned me off. And I've heard 69 love songs vol.1 and it wasn't as good. So that's my two cents. But I should give them more of a chance, I suppose. |

| Fans of the Magnetic Fields who want to dig a little deeper into Mag Fields-related stuff, might want to give the band Flare a listen. They're LD Beghtol's band. He's one of the singers on 69 Love Songs. They make some gorgeous music and are worth checking out. I like Flare much more than The Magnetic Fields, who I don't care about that much. |

I saw them at the Berklee Performance Center last Saturday and they were outstanding. Just uke, guitar, cello, and piano. The arrangements of the new material from "i" were much better than on the record which I don't like very much. I wish he hadn't used so much drum machine.
In general, I think Stephen Merrit is a brilliant songwriter and arranger and 69 Love Songs is amazing.
At the show they did this funny thing were they had the audience snap their fingers instead of clapping because Stephen's ears were bothering him. It sounded like a giant rain stick. When they came back for the encore everyone was clapping until Stephen stepped on stage and then everyone switched to snapping. Stephen was very funny and entertaining. He seemed like a shy, but nice person.

I don't think I've ever heard any of their stuff, but they are playing here (Columbus, OH -OSU Campus), along with Andrew Bird, who we used to really dig quite a bit, at the Wexner Center on June 30th. Here's the info, and some reviews and tidbits about the band for anyone that might want it:

The Magnetic Fields are good. I started out listening to i, the new album, probably not the best place to start as I nearly gave up on them. The Charm Of The Highway Strip won me over, lots of good songs, excellent lyrics, brilliant album.
I'm listening to the three volumes of 69 Love Songs now, there are lots of super songs on there with a few not soo good ones in between. I'll collect all the good ones on one cd which should make one hell of a brilliant listen.

Beghtol is also in a band with Chris Xefos (formely of King Missile, currently doing some excellent work with Victor Krummenacher of Camper Van Beethoven) called the Moth Wranglers. They did a cover of No. 13 Baby. Good stuff.

I haven't heard THAT much, but I really like what I've heard. A lot. 69 Love Songs is amazing. The new one, I, is really good as well. I also have an album by the 6ths, which is basically other people singing Stephin Merritt's songs.
For what it's worth, I think Disc 2 is probably the weakest of the three 69 Love Songs discs. It does have "Papa Was A Rodeo," though, and that's a really cool song.
