Another post, another username. Blinkin' passwords.
Anyway, anyone out there remember the Cult of Ray Tour Tshirts? At least the UK designs?
I had - until recently - the design with a broad cheshire cat style grin across the front, with barely visible screwed-up eyes. A great shirt and I've come across all wistful to see it again, and maybe reproduce it?
If you're wondering what happened to it, it was left unpacked during a holiday to Gran Canaria. (Las Palmas, thereabouts, if anyone feels like staging a recovery party.)

Coolest shirt design, and I seem to remember a fairly amazing tour...

Not only do I have a Cult of Ray t-shirt and still wear it around the house (I bought it on the tour and it's pretty nasty by now), but I also have a Cult of Ray bumper sticker on the back of my piece of crap car. I plan on sending the car to the scrap heap in a couple months but will try to scrape off the sticker. Truthfully, it's worth more than the car. |

Hello there.
It is not the album *floaty face* picture. I think "the thing" knows what I'm on about. It was similar to the disembodied smile and screwed up eyes of the cheshire cat, on a mid-dark blue shirt. It was ace. No Logo or name, I'm sure - 's one of thew reasoins I liked it so much. 2/3 colour print?
I might draw a rough facsimile in a bit, if I need to as a visual aid (as they say these days.)

Which prompts the obvious response....
Holey, or not, did the girlfriend later follow it into the bin?
Do you know I can't even part with my old, old Judas Priest tshirt, I'm that fond of tour tshirts. It is unwearable, not for it's wear but for it's lurid, stupid design. Not even for gardening
Great concert though.... |

Just realised that I had the sticker as well - thankfully preserved on one of my old sketchbooks.

Great.
Does anyone have the facility to scan it and upload/email me the email?
That way I can redraw it to a printable quality.

If I knew, Kath, I wouldn't be trying to recreate it. My guess is that ebay is the ONLY source for one?
My request for a scan or more accurate drawing still stands if anyone could help?

Can someone help Mr. Nightsoil so he can, in turn, help us?
I suppose I could do a simple jpg of an image? Would that be enough?

Kathryn,
I'd be your friend forever if you could do that.
What I intend to do is redraw the thing in Illustrator or photoshop(rather like that quick sketch), in two colours. Should be identical to the original that way.
It does need to be pretty clear in the first place for that though. (a scan or drawing.) It really doesn't matter what format - .jpg; .bmp; .psd; .tga; whatever! JPG is easiest to send.
If I do this it could also be turned into a backdrop or whatever for kindfolk everywhere?

I have the shirt in question. It's olive green and has the big grin. I'm in the middle of a move so it might be a week or two before I can find it but I'll take a digital pic and post it as soon as I can. |

You, mate, want to give yourself an extra couple of cats on that profile of yours!
When you get the chance to send it, I'll tidy it up, and upload it for everyone.
Cheers John. |

I recall seeing that tshirt in the UK too. There were dates on the back of mine also, but that's not something I've ever liked.

I have a Frank Black shirt that I found, of all places, at the Salvation Army. I'm pretty sure it's COR era, I've always called it the "men in black shirt". It is black and has three alien heads stacked on top of each other in the middle of the shirt. the letters "FRNK" are printed on one side of the shirt and "BLCK" on the opposite. The back has his signature printed on it.

true story, regarding cor t-shirts:
it was, i believe, either late february or early march, 1996. i was a senior in high school, and travelled all the way from macon to athens, georgia (2.5 hours) to see frank black at the 40 watt club. but before i left, i scribbled some old charles thompson poetry onto my white button-up shirt and wore it to the show. [i got the poetry from a post on the old "subbacultcha" mailing list that is now defunct]
needless to say, i arrived very early. i ended up chatting with the merch girl, and found out she was actually part of frank's tour staff (a lot of the time they get locals to sell merch, so this was a surprise). she asked me about the shirt, so i told her it was some old poetry that charles had published in his high school yearbook, that i tracked down through a fan list on the internet. she thought it was cool.
anyway... the show started... i wanna say that johnny polonsky was the opener, but honestly i really didn't care, so i don't remember... i just wanted to get up front and center for frank. and i was. he was dripping sweat on me the whole show. me and this other guy up front were the only ones going nuts, i couldn't believe it... how could anyone *not* be moved by this music?
at the end of the show, his lead guitarist (i *think* it was lyle workman) leaned over and gave me the pick that he'd been using. i was in heaven.
but wait... it gets better.
so i stuck around, waiting for the crowd to die down, so i didn't have to wait in line to buy a t-shirt. eventually, almost everyone else was gone, so i went back and chit-chatted with the merch girl again... and she was like "show your shirt to my friend" (another girl)... and i turned around so she could read it. she thought it was neat too. so i bought a t-shirt, and waited around for a few minutes before leaving (i'm not sure why).
well, the friend comes up to me and says "i'm charles' girlfriend, and i told him about your shirt, and he wants to see it." so she took me backstage, and i got to meet the man himself. we chatted for a good 10 minutes, he gave me a coke (soda), and then told his gf to go get me one of each of the t-shirt designs they had for sale.
how nice was that?
i've still got the poetry shirt. i haven't washed or worn it since then. the sweat stains are still evident. i don't think i'll ever get rid of it. i had the empty coke can up until about a year ago (then realized it was kinda lame to keep). and the t-shirts? they're packed up in a box at my mom's house, never worn.
i met charles a few times after that. the crazy thing was that i saw him again 3 years later, at the same club... i just went up to the stage while they were packing up gear, and just wanted to say you know "hey, great show." and what not... but he actually stopped what he was doing so we could talk. he was like "so how are you?"... and i thought he was just being nice or something... there was no way he could possibly remember me, right? and then he said "do you still live in macon these days?" .. and i told him that i lived near nashville actually, and had driven down for the show.
incredible.
i've seen him several times since, and never really got a chance to talk, but there's no doubt in my mind that he still remembers the guy with the poetry shirt who went nuts at the athens, ga show in '96. hopefully when all the pixies reunion fanfare dies down, frank will start touring again, and be a little more accessible. cause hey, i'm way past 18 now, and we could chat over beers instead of soda pop. =)
that's my frank black story. |

Wow - now THAT's a story.
I never had a Cult of Ray shirt, but the designs described above sound / look remarkably similar to the TOTY tour shirt I got when I saw FB at Shepherd's Bush Empire in '94;
The shirt also came in blue. Black shirts with the 'FRNK BLCK' design were also being sold at this gig - I think they also came in a different colour too but that may be my memory playing tricks...

That's it!
Fantastic. I'm in the middle of renovating an old Thorens record deck, so it looks like I've gotten another project once I've finished that! I'll post a large cleaned-up version at some point soon.
Thanks again.
